>>25241099I've only read his first two books.Maps of Meaning had a very noble and ambitious objective. I just don't think Peterson is smart enough to achieve it. Many of his citations seemed haphazard and scatter-brained (12 Rules has this same issue), his schematics felt arbitrary and superfluous, and many of his arguments just felt incomplete. This is a book that should have been co-written by several people from multiple disciplines (it is an interdisciplinary book by definition, even if that term feels woke-coopted to some) like history and biology and philosophy. Letting one psychologist trying to tackle it all is silly. Oh, and Peterson is an extremely droll and inelegant writer, he's so much better at public speaking that it ain't even funny. 12 Rules for Life is quintessential midwit self-help manchild core. A clinician using clinical psychology tools to address social psychology problems is what this book is, and it's an ideological clusterfuck of a disaster. The book feels like it was written for someone who hasn't read a book since high school. It's mainly praised by aging jocks or STEM dorks with no penchant for the liberal arts or the humanities. It's also just a deeply redundant version of books that have been coming out in this "genre" since the 1970s. Anyone who has already read Rollo May, Erich Fromm, Paul Tilich, etc., will be deeply bored and confused by this book's reputation. For the more political stuff, Chris Hedges and Sheldon Wollin are vastly superior contemporaries.
