Why did William S. Burroughs do it?

Because he was drunk and overestimated his abilities.
It's obvious that it was a terrible mistake, and that Burroughs regretted it afterwards - his whole life after the incident seems like a big self destructive act born out of extreme guilt and desire to forget (the heavy bout of Eukodal abuse in Tangier).
I don't remember which of the two biographies mentions it, but even at the end of his life Burroghs would visit the shooting range and practice drunk, which implies he couldn't get over the mistake and it bothered him tremendously that he shoot his wife.
Basically, it was a horrible drunk mistake that haunted Burroughs for the rest of his life.
For an Estonian, it's just Tuesday after work. An average Estonian would even fuck his wife's corpse afterwards before pussy gets cold, and then go to work the next day like nothing unusual had happened, no shred of regret in whatever passes for his soul. Just an average day in the greatest country of the world, with the smartest people and the best, most efficient language in the universe: Estonia.

Why the hate boner for Estonia? Did an Estonian fuck your mom? Or are you from Estonia?

A veiled confession. He’s playing at telling you he (William) shot her

weird estonian hate aside, this is the correct answer. they weren't getting along and didn't like each other but he never intended to shoot her and was haunted by guilt for the rest of his life

Is there a book that goes into detail about this?

That's the self-hating Estonianon. I always see him in language/translation threads whenever people praise highly inflected languages. This is a less common occasion in which he complains about something else regarding his people.
