what are the best communist books

Das Kapital (Capital) by Karl Marx (German):
>The central argument is that the motivating force of capitalism is in the exploitation of labour, whose unpaid work is the ultimate source of surplus value and profit

The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx (German) and Friedrich Engels (German):
>The seminal pamphlet outlining the mission. one of the world's most influential political documents.
>The authors assert that capitalism is marked by the exploitation of the proletariat (working class of wage labourers) by the ruling bourgeoisie, which is "constantly revolutionising the instruments [and] relations of production, and with them the whole relations of society".
>The Manifesto concludes that capitalism does not offer humanity the possibility of self-realization, instead ensuring that human beings are perpetually stunted and alienated

Wage Labour and Capital by Karl Marx (German):
>A shorter, accessible explanation of how labor is exploited. It did suggest that class rule of the bourgeoisie in capitalist society rests on the wage slavery of the workers.

The Principles of Communism by Friedrich Engels (German):
>Often recommended for beginners, it uses a question-and-answer format to explain core tenets.

On Practice and Contradiction by Mao Zedong (Chinese, from a peasant family in South China):
>Explains Marxist philosophy in relatively accessible language.
>attempts to establish a distinctly Chinese brand of communist philosophy called Maoism. From the 1950s until the reform of Deng Xiaoping in the late 1970s, Maoism was the political and military ideology of the Chinese Communist Party

The State and Revolution by Vladimir Lenin (Russian, founder of the Bolsheviks and the world's first communist state)
>his views on the role of the state in society, the necessity of proletarian revolution, and the theoretical inadequacies of social democracy in achieving revolution to establish the dictatorship of the proletariat

I don't think it's all nonsense, but if you have a revolutionary and amazing historical materialist framework that's good at predicting social and economic trends, you should be winning lots of money on degenerate leveraged betting.

With a history podcast called Revolutions. You should understand the context that provided the basis for their ideas to flourish. I think Marx and Engels were covered in the Russian Revolution season.

>Main Currents of Marxism. Kolakowski.
Its a fantastic 3 volume work (the founders, The Golden age, and The breakdown.) Kolakowski wasn't exactly fan of Marxism, but I think this is one of the most succinct, well put together books on Marxist thought.
Despite its size its quite accessible and fairly balanced.

>Now that communism is becoming relevant again
I’ve noticed it being mentioned more often by younger people than a few years ago. I’ve seen several people label themselves “Marxist” without understanding Marxism or its history recently. It seems to be floating around in the ether a bit more than usual.

Neoliberalism failed everyone. Wages have stagnated for the past 30 years while corporate profits are at an all time high. Job security is no longer a thing, layoffs are common and there's an an economic crises every 5 years

Failed? Unlike neoliberalism, communism improved lives across decades wherever it was practiced. The happiest and most prosperous countries on the planet even today have social policy. While the worst shitholes to live practice unbounded liberal capitalism. The fuck you on about?

If you're in the west, modern communists are not very rooted in Marx and Engels. Just be aware of that.
By and large their positions are generally vibes-based, with a smidge of Foucault thrown in.

You can also start with Slavoj Žižeks works

I recommend "the courage of hopelessness"

Read Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, Chen Duxiu, Peng Shuzhi, Chen Bilan.

Orthodox Trotskyism basically.

Sure they improved a lot of lives. Any lives they couldn't improve they just got rid of them.
