And for those just vaguely curious, Crawford's second edition of the poetic edda isn't the most scholarly translation but is perfectly serviceable. The man bolted it together for his undergraduate classes. It has solid reasoning for his choices and background information on things like kennings. If anyone has an epub of the faulkes prose edda though, please dump it somewhere. None of the usual suspects do.
>>25245101Looks good, thanks anon! Saved
>>25245108Jesus here. STFU faggot. I fucking died for your sins.
>>25245741Joshua WOULDN’T say this.
>>25245590Don't think there is an epub, I can only find the pdf
>>25245101Ben Waggoner is a neopagan, but otherwise the chart looks fine.
>>25246393True but he doesn't let it intrude into his translations which are well-researched. If it's an issue, I also recommended Seven Viking Romances as another translation of Gautrek, but I chose Waggoner as the main kne because his is more literal and has informative notes.
Didn't know Odin was an "ACKK!" god. He committed suicide for our sins.
>>25246400That video was surprisingly well done. Went through many theories, explained things well. Gave reasonable background. Not too much, not too little.>>25246315Yeah. Shame. Still, if anyone will have it here will.
After considering, I actually think Carolyne Larrington's book on Norse myths is a better introduction than Baker's since she provides historical background.
>>25246400That stuff's really cool. Although Odin sacrificed himself for wisdom, not for anyone's sins. There might be some really old Indo-European motifs there about a god's self-sacrifice. In the vedic hymns, Purusha is a primordial being sacrificed to himself to create the world. Norse myths seems to have divided this role between Ymir and Odin; Ymir is killed by Odin to create the world (possibly related to motifs of overthrowing an older generation of gods in Hittite and Greek myth) while Odin is the ritual self-sacrifice. Since being hanged was a genuine method of human sacrifice in northern europe, it's plausible that it's a genuinely old myth and not just Christian influence.
>>25245101Do you think you could make one for faggots next?cheers
>>25245101>translation Whats the point? All this stuff is just cope for people who can't read the romans anyway. Too dumb for Latin or Greek. Can't even manage norse!
>>25245741Hey man, I'm a big fan
>>25245101Kevin Crossley-Holland is excellent.
>>25245101
>>25245108Beowulf is a Christian story
>>25248386I considered his book but he only has the stories about the gods. The heroic stories are often neglected in English-language resources so I wanted something that covers them.
>>25245101Saga of Gísli Súrsson debunks the idea that warriors did not go to the underworld in death, since Vésteinn's corpse is given hel-shoes with which he can "walk to Valhalla." The old pagan belief that everyone went the way of the body: below seems to be very old.
>>25248401Wow, and I thought Greek pantheon was retarded.
