Well, do you enjoy reading?
>>25245498Yeah. It's not as exhilarating as a good game. I dont go crazy for it. But it's alright. I have a hard time reading for longer than 30 minutes at a time though.
>>25245505You'll get bored of it after reading the peak of literature. Also pro tip : if you can't stand reading for too long, you're just reading the wrong book.
>>25245505Welcome refugee. Tell us what you been reading so we can figure out if you worth a /lit/izenship.
>>25245505What have you read thus far? When I started reading I didn’t feel very exhilarated but after a good few you get an eye for good writing and when you see a particularly well written passage it’s a more electrifying feeling than I’ve ever had from watching a movie or tv show. Video games have changed a lot since I last picked up a controller though, so I wouldn’t know about that.
>>25245528>if you can't stand reading for too long, you're just reading the wrong book.Yeah, also if you go to the gym and your muscles start to feel sore, you should stop and go to McDonalds instead. What a terrible piece of advice to give another human being ffs.
>>25245505age?>>25245538false equivalence fallacy, you can go back to /v/ now
>>25245538That would imply the anon was telling him to quit reading altogether and go back to playing video games, dimwit.
>>25245483I'm in the same boat, video games are meaningless junk food. They haven't evolved at all in 20+ years other than pixels and loading screens. Dogshit stories, paper thin characters, and at the end of the day it feels less like serious art and more like a jungle gym for toddlers.
>>25245528>>25245533>>25245534In the last year or so I've read:Blood MeridianNo Country for Old MenThe CollectorIndustrial Society and it's FutureAnthem The FountainheadNotes from the Underground The Stranger
>>25245538Yes retard, if you keep working out sore muscles you’ll injure yourself. McDonald’s is good for calorie replacement if you’ve over exerted yourself
>>25245548>>25245550My god you spergs, my point is obviously that some literature, rewarding literature is suposed to be challenging, moreso for someone who is not used to it. If you need a perfect metaphor just figure McDonald means only ever reading contemporary bestsellers, retards.
>>25245552Would you say you’ve gained an eye for good and mediocre prose? Would you be willing to give poetry a try? How did you find some of the language in Blood Meridian? And did any elicit an emotional reaction in you, or offer a new perspective? I think when you read something you truly enjoy, you’ll enjoy it more than any video game you’ve ever played, I hope.
>>25245538you want to sound smart so bad lmao
>>25245551Games are for visuals and immersion rather than story. Feels nice to play AC Odyssey after reading the Greeks
>>25245564No I dont know what's good and what's bad. I dont even know what prose means. Blood Meridian was a really tough read, and because of that it took forever to get through. I almost quit it around chapter 4 because of the lack of punctuation and whatnot. No, I haven't gained wisdom or gotten emotional, but I was very invested in Howard Roark as a character, even though The Fountainhead had its moments where it was a slog.
>>25245580no even that feels like dicking around with kid's toys and overpriced action figures. the best thing to do after reading the odyssey is to read ulysses.
>>25245552Try to read Marcel Proust.
>>25245505>MUH DOPAMINE
>>25245614OP is a genuine retard. Proust is leagues above what this moron is capable of reading and appreciating.
>>25245614Recommending a person who doesn’t know what prose means Proust is like telling a 90lbs twig to deadlift 500kg lel
>>25245483start a blog, faggot.
>>25245614"Try" being the keyword kek
>>25245505This is what I tell my wife
>>25245483more or less what happened to me last year, but not just video games, pretty much everything became no longer fun. I read like 2-3 hours a day now and it's been a really great thing to introduce to my life. Feel like I'm truly getting a lot out of it. Hope the same happens for you anon
I started reading seriously 10 years ago after never reading a book for fun throughout my childhood and early 20s. Once I read most of the classics I wanted to read and started dipping into other books, I've come to the conclusion that reading is just another form of consumption and that you're coping if you think you're much better than people who watch tv or play video games. There's plenty of good games, good cinema, and slop literature. Before most these other forms of media, people who read all time were also viewed negatively. It's better to keep your consumptive hobbies varried pick up a creative one instead or you'll eventually get bored of reading too.
>>25245483>Video games are no longer fun and life is miserable, so now I read.Soon you'll get to a point where reading isn't enough to stave off the dread of having no financial security. Which makes life miserable.
>>25246365and then your realize its about raising a familyAnd then you realize its about fucking 18 y/o prime pussyAnd then youbrealize its about artistic fullfilment...And then....And thus the cycle continues
>>25245552I think I know a series that's right up your alley
>>25247296I actually have the Book of the New Sun series on my e-reader, but I just haven't jumped in yet. Maybe I'll do that next, currently reading The Castle.
>>25245505>I have a hard time reading for longer than 30 minutes at a time though.Try ten hours.
>>25247438You’re not one of those self improvement readers are you? The way you’ve been talking about it… it gives me the impression that you don’t actually enjoy the act of reading and you just do it to get out of your vidya funk. Anyway, you’d probably enjoy that book of the new Sun, not my thing but it looks pretty exciting,
>>25245551I prefer video games over tv and movies though
