I am reading Huxley's Brave New World with my girlfriend because she asked me what I was doing and then asked me to read it for her.

I tried reading just the book's Penguin preface to her but we had to skip it and she told me to just read it on my own because she didn't know what "gazette" or "sojourn" meant and got mad when I was astonished.

Apparently those are pretentious and academic words that noone uses anymore and it's not her fault she isn't "educated" like me to understand them (we are both college dropouts we have the same level of formal education neither of us are smart at all). She's done this with words like "aborescent", "assail", "shambolic" and even the woman meme word "cacaphony" in the past week too when she found them in online articles.

Is she right? Am I a weirdo for understanding any word that wouldn't be in a TMZ video or is she fucking stupid?

Nice LARP and you're not that special
>>
>>25246350
>you're not that special
I know, everyone should know what these words mean, why the fuck do I have to deal with dumbass women and brown third worlders with the vocabulary of a 9 year old in every language they speak
>>
your girlfriend is retarded but yes our beautiful perfect language is being dumbed down to cater for ESLs
>>
>>25246343
Was she playful mad or really mad? Why can't women CALM THE FUCK DOWN.
>>
Huxley was brit. Americans were never much elaborated with words.
>>
>>25246354
Why should everyone know what these words mean? They are not functional for the majority of the population.

>why the fuck do I have to deal with dumbass women and brown third worlders with the vocabulary of a 9 year old in every language they speak
Brown third worlders do it because that's the typical capacity of brown third worlders. Women do it because it's been made socially fashionable to speak in such a sordid way. It's also been made socially unacceptable to use "white sounding" or "nerdy" (academic) words. This has been done for the purpose of social control, and it's largely been accomplished forcememing low-brow (black) media.
>>
>>25246358
I think she gets mad because she thinks people use those words she can't understand to try to be better than her, that's why she calls it pretentious

>>25246363
Why should we teach the average faggot to read then in the first place?
>they are not functional for the majority of the population
In certain contexts they are, that's why English has so many synonyms, to allow for nuance and to help us appreciate that nuance.
>>
>>25246368
>she calls it pretentious
She's right. Outside of poetry, what kind of pretentious dbag gets off using gay ass words like
"gazette" "sojourn" "aborescent", "assail", "shambolic"

I've always been a honor student, got my PhD and we all grew out of using words to sound smart back when we were 15

It's just reeks of desperation

>In certain contexts they are
I can see the point of expecting people to understand more complex, high-utility words but some of the ones you listed are pretty context specific and better just explicitly learned when encountered. Basically I don't think your gf is retarded for not knowing them. it would be retarded if she didn't care to find out what they mean. Also
>TMZ video
Fuck me how old are you anon
>>
>>25246377
I never use those words verbally with people in normal settings either but if I read for pleasure I should be able to recognise them in prose no?
>>
>>25246343
duz she fuk gud?
>>
>>25246383
She doesn't have a 10/10 vocabulary database. If that's all that upsets you about her then you got lucky you found such a good match.

If you feel the same way quit ragging her for intelligence stuff. Nobody likes that.
>>
>>25246368

It's arborescent you rhizoomer
>>

>>
>>25246377
None of those are obscure aside from arborescent and you can work out that means from arbor = place with trees.
>>
>>25246343
I mean, that fact that you’re reading it to her is a clear sign of her lack of intellect. My ex used to want me to do this too, and I used to tell her that she isn’t a fucking child.

At least she’s trying to learn the words though yeah, she doesn’t seem very bright due to her irrational anger. It’s true however these words aren’t in common use (not that sojourn or gazette are particularly rare) but there are definitely worse and more recent books guilty of pulling out the thesaurus.

>>25246343
>I am reading Huxley's Brave New World with my girlfriend because she asked me what I was doing and then asked me to read it for her.
She wants to be a part of stuff you do. Have you never noticed women's tendency to do this?

>I tried reading just the book's Penguin preface to her
I can't in general endorse the reading of prefaces but that's not the main issue here.

>but we had to skip it and she told me to just read it on my own because she didn't know what "gazette" or "sojourn" meant
These words will be known by anyone who reads a lot or associates with people who read a lot. Otherwise, not necessarily.

>and got mad when I was astonished.
Your "astonishment" was crass and annoying and felt like spittle on her cheek. You should be:
a) sufficiently intelligent and wise to realize the above, i.e. that plenty of people, even reasonably alert and intelligent people, won't know these words (particularly nowadays, when schools don't teach people anything.)
b) sufficiently kind not to make her feel bad about not knowing them.

>Apparently those are pretentious and academic words that noone uses anymore and it's not her fault she isn't "educated" like me to understand them (we are both college dropouts we have the same level of formal education neither of us are smart at all).
Her anger is probably about 50% insecurity and 50% annoyance at you being mean.

>She's done this with words like "aborescent",
Definitely not a word one encounters often. Some people would work it out from knowing what an "arbour" is (or "arbor", depending which side of the Atlantic you are).

>"assail", "shambolic"
These I would expect any educated person to know, but see the earlier point.

>and even the woman meme word "cacaphony" in the past week too when she found them in online articles.
Err . . . cacophony?

>Is she right?
She's right emotionally, yes. Remember that for her, this wasn't about incorporating Aldous Huxley into her weltanschuung. It was about making you two more of a couple. For her, the interaction went as follows:

HER: Let me be closer to you.
YOU: <Blah blah hard words>
HER: I don't know these words. Are you reading a hard words book on your own as a way of shutting me out?
YOU: Hahaha, you don't know these words!? I will show AMAZEMENT to emphasize how STUPID you are.
HER: Are we a couple or not?!? Don't attack me!

>Am I a weirdo for understanding any word that wouldn't be in a TMZ video
No.

>or is she fucking stupid?
Also no.
>>
>>25246343
She got mad that you were astonished, she wasn't mad about the words. She probably felt like you were looking down on her. You should have just taught her what those words meant and kept going. You blew your chance at turning her into a more refined lady.
>>
>>25246350

It is, if we all keep talking like that.
>she told me to just read it on my own because she didn't know
Ignorance is excusable, it can be cured. You shouldn't have been so hard on her. As a man, it's your duty to instruct and to instill a sense of curiosity in her, and you failed.
>>

>As a man, it's your duty to instruct and to instil a sense of curiosity in her, and you failed.
Not OP but no it isn’t, what are you even talking about?

She’s her own person, an adult, at that, the responsibility is on her.
>>
>>25246343
it's been fucked since the norman invasion mate

Wow, shut the fuck up you pathetic simp
>>
Judging your woman by male standards is very low.
>>
>>25246343
me and my brother have this problem, sometimes, but it's more like not knowing what is considered common knowledge. We've been both called arrogant before. Neither of us consider ourselves particularly smart, so if we know it (unless it's weird and niche) we just assume everyone else knows it too.

But yeah, those are all pretty basic words. Never heard aborescent or shambolic before, but I like looking up words I don't know.
>>
I’m a woman and get turned on by the fact that my bf is intellectually superior than me. Even in areas where he is not I force myself to believe that he is to not spoil my perception of him

>>
>>25246770
They're people. C'mon. They're just not men.
>>
>>25246795
Nope. Any rigorous examination of the definition of the word "person" disqualifies women.
>>
>>25246770
>>25246795
>>25246804
Well, all I’m saying is, whether they’re people or not, they take up a lot of space in this here Earth, so they need to adapt.

It is funny though, sorry OP, but every time I read a post here about someone talking about their girlfriend, it’s like they’re talking about their child. Like a curious little kid who has tantrums when they didn’t understand a word you read to them in their bedtime story, yours is not the only instance of this I’ve seen here, I don’t mean any disrespect though,
>>
>>25246816
We did adapt. The result was their complete and utter subjugation. That's worked for thousands of years. And the moment they got they slightest bit of freedom, they began destroying everything.
>every time I read a post here about someone talking about their girlfriend, it’s like they’re talking about their child.
That is a generous dynamic, yes. Note that husbandry is the care of animals and women.

Magazine
>Sojourn
Staying in one place for an extended period of time.
>Aborescent (I assume you mean Arborescent? otherwise idk)
I think this one means "like a tree"
>Assail
Siege, attack
>Shambolic
Never heard this one before. I assume is related to "shambling"?
>Cacophony
A series of unpleasant sounds, the opposite of harmony

how did I do?
>>
>>25246343
anything more complicated than a fast food menu or anime dialogue will be seen as elitist and pretentious to automaton vermin these days
>Is she right?
No she's a fucking retarded nog kek
>>
>>25247039
Mostly spot on, to clarify a gazette is more akin to a newspaper than a magazine. And shambolic means disorganised, all over the place, in shambles
>>
>>25247039
>>25247079
The "shambles" was the place in a town or whatever where animals were slaughtered or where the butchers' stalls would be. Hence it was a real mess with entrails and blood and stuff all over the place.
>>
>>25247039
a sojourn is for a short period of time
