I am interested in Catholicism but I would like to know which version of the Bible is commonly used by Catholics. What would you recommend?
>>25247239They use multiple translations. The one used for liturgy depends on where you live. In the USA it's the New American Bible, in Canada it's the NRSV-CE, in Britain it's the New Jerusalem Bible, etc. Some terminally online Catholics will tell you one is the best and the rest are heretical but they'd be wrong. For a general translation, any approved by the church is fine. If you want study notes from a faithful Catholic perspective, there's the Ignatius Study Bible which uses the RSV-2CE translation.
>CatholicismWhy? They literally worship graven images.
>>25247253Thank you for the information.I'll pick up an NAB version.
>>25247253The NAB is obviously not heretical but it is the retarded choice of the DMV of Christ. I have one anyway, of course. If it's all you've got, you won't be led astray or anything. The Jerusalem Bible is very nice for reading.
>>25247292What makes it the retarded choice? What are your thoughts on the DRV Bible?
Check out the Saint Ignatius Study bible and the Catechism
I attend a tlm so my missal uses Douay-Rheims. In private reading I use Douay-Rheims and rsv2ce.
I recommend the Ronald Knox translation. It's the one used on the Bible section of newadvent.org so you can check it out straight away if you want.>>25247259We do not.
>>25247239Villanova University (where the current Pope went) makes you buy this one, although I doubt they were using the same edition in 1980 or whatever.
>>25247239KJV is by far the best and most important translation into English and I'm pretty sure most Catholics are okay with it. If anyone tells you not to start with it then they're trying to harm your education.
>>25247239Most replies are accurate, though it needs to be said that, to us Catholics, the Bible is but one of the sources of Revelation, the other two being Church Magisterium—through which, for example, the dogma of the Immaculate Conception is formalised—and sacred Tradition—the doctrine of Guardian Angels being a common example. As far as the former is concerned, Denzinger's Sources of Catholic Dogma provides an almost complete collection of papal documents up until Pious XII (1958).Best of luck!
Just read The Holy Bible dammit. The real one.
>>25247239Whichever you like/find easiest. It's a dense thing with layers and layers and layers of thought, you'll be rereading it and its different translations. Basically just read it in whichever manner/translation you feel like. Kids Bible? Good. KJV? Good. NLT? Good. Read one verse in 5 different translations to see how they differ? Good. Follow a dude on insta posting excerpts with pics of funny cats? Good.Any translation will work as long as you try to understand what is said. You can google/chatgpt anything you feel doubts about.
>>25247239just drink a lot and become head of the department of war and quote tarantino movies
>>25247239Get a Catholic Study Bible, since it has a translation that is approved by the Church and has decent commentary that will help you understand the text. There are 3 main ones Ignatius Catholic Study Bible: released recently, the most popular oneDidache Bible: the commentaries are based on the CatechismNavarra Bible: the largest and with the most extensive commentaries. But it is LARGE. You better have space in your room. Or get the kindle edition.Get any of the 3.
Isn't the Oxford Annotated Bible interdenominational and wouldn't it also suit the purpose?
>>25247239Catholic Bible translations are just bad. The best Catholic Bible that everyone recommends, the Ignatius one, uses an update of the 1952 Protestant Revised Standard Version
>>25247239Pic related is the Douay-Rheims of Thomas A Nelson. It feels like a personal Bible, not the same as you would use in the pew, but there's a difference between the Bible you use at Church and the Bible you use at home, the most common experience for Catholics is going to Catholic mass and using the Bible there.
>>25249184You mean OP's pic?
>>25249384Yes. They used to have a Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti symbol on the front, but now they're reprinting it to have OP's pic for a cover. It's a pretty good Bible. I like it more than most of the dolled up mass produced ones with expensive binding at the same price.
>>25248993The notes are for atheists. Catholic Bibles should have notes for Catholics.
Someone should make an annotated New Oxford Annotated Bible to show its errors for true Christians.
Rsv2ce is reasonable, noab is fine, as is the osb. Don't read the nrsv. I'd recommend reading the new testament first, then go back to the ot.Don't forget the catechism. If you're more interested in the church and catholicism itself the catechism is going to be a better first stop than the bible.
