>>25250002No but the users of RR evidently have
>>25250006Sanderson's lectures are by far the best advice for writing popular genre fiction that I've seen. Yes a few things he says are outdated or disagreeable, but that will be true for any long-form advice. What are you suggesting to replace it with?
I yam working on my dogshit web novel currently working on chapter 5. This is an experiment for me and it feels weird but a lot easier not doing my usual 4k+ word count for a chapter and keeping it closer to around 2.5. It's a nice change of pace really.

>>25250006yeah they're dogshitalso the whole >Why read web novels?>Why write web novels?sections should be cut. it only encourages the most annoying kind of tourists and shit posters. anyone seeking out the thread would know what a webnovel is
>>25250020Honestly, I don’t want to replace it with anything at all besides the bare minimum grammar and dialogue advice, and a note telling new writers to simply study how their favorite web fiction authors write instead of wasting months or years of their lives in tutorial hell. The best way to learn to write is by writing, after all.

When it comes to AI writing, people like to complain about em dashes, the rule of three, and “it’s not this, but that,” but what drives me up the wall is shit like this:A step, slow and deliberate. He said, smooth and measured. The road, long and winding. The morning breeze. Crisp. Clean. Refleshing. The air felt wrong. Heavy. Dangerous. Like something tangible pressing down. Something alive.Seeing this stuff in translated WNs makes me miss shitty Google translated MTLs.
>>25250202Retard
>>25250207Those constructions work when appropriate, and in fact are very effective, perhaps ideal in certain situations. The issue with AI is that it has no idea of when such heavy handed melodrama is fitting and will drop them anywhere and everywhere

That free RR premium's gonna need to come soon so I can figure out what's prompting the drop-off after three chapters. My estimation on what's actually retention doesn't seem too bad given I haven't done a marketing push yet, approximately 30%, but if I can figure out what the overall issue is now, I can work on that for, if nothing else, future projects.
>>25250261the user dropoff is more usefulbut that doesn't seem like bad dropoff to begin with even for all viewers. everyone sheds a lot of readers on chapter 1
>>25250270Yeah, I think the overall dropoff isn't actually bad. It's just not as smooth a gradient from 3 to 4 as it is from 4 to my current chapters and I was curious as to if that's just RR user habits or if there was some kind of shift I didn't even realize I was doing that's caused the gap. Overall I think my views are better than I expected them to be at this point, I hit 1500 already and the majority of my advertising was within the first 5 days of starting (largely because I've run out of places to shill within my creative wheelhouse), it's mostly just been lucky post timing. I plan on going into shill overdrive after I get some other visual works done and I've finished chambering new chapters to dole out on schedule for the next couple of weeks (I've got a week's worth stockpiled for now) so I'll start seeing what really works for me.
>>25250280Oops, misclicked spoil image. Oh well.
>>25250236That was because the model was using too many mythological and fantasy creatures in it's metaphors. Which is kind of hilarious when you think about.
>>25250286I assumed it was because it started catching up on contemporary reddit/tumblr discourse instead of just Gen X Cosmopolitan/Buzzfeed articles and hit the time where for about six months they all kept talking about "goblin mode." At this rate by next month I think it's gonna start talking about the word "Chud" at a similar clip.

I would rather not have his presence on my work at all. I accept negative reviews, just not ones designed specifically for sabotage."The worst they'll do is say no. >>25251858Without giving too much away: feminism. It sticks in my craw because they DNF'd and reviewed so early in the story, they didn't see and won't see that their concerns were misplaced. And now their review misrepresents the story as a whole.I will have to believe in readers who can see a low rating and "reviewed at chapter [redacted]" and put two and two together and realize the review is basically worthless.
>>25251780>Just starts talking about gay sex for no reasonLet me guess, you don't read fmc?>>25251788
you anons ever notice the gooks posting their ai translated WNs onto RR?
>>25251910No, because I generally don't read cultivation.Except for 1% Lifesteal which resumed posting again last week.
>>25251922anon, those are chinks. gooks are the koreans. know the difference between the subspecies of the oriental incursion. it could save your life.
>>25251830>it's the first time this has happened in over a hundred ratings.>in over a hundred ratings.Boo hoo. One negative out of a hundred and this nigga is crying foul.
The funny thing about negative reviews is that more often than not, they accrue the most upvotes. I leave mostly negative reviews (10+), and most get the #1 spot on the most upvotes ordering (even if they're top RS).I think people want to hate, but they feel posting their own review, negative comments or even a low score is a step too far, and use negative reviews as an outlet for their frustration. Thus, I think it's a bad idea to flush them out; you'll just see more of those users leave a low rating instead.
>>25251933I'mma be real I thought you were mixing up the slurs, actually. Not that you were being particular. My bad.I also don't read tower climbing or academy drama.I keep it western. That means monster girl evolution, capeshit, and LitRPG tolkein-derived fantasy.
>>25251922>I'm a vegan btw!
Someone here told me to read So I’m a Spider So What? when I asked for LN recs, or to somebody else, not too sure, so I picked it up. I actually liked this one. Although I only read until Volume 7. After that I looked up something and that spoiled me and then I looked up everything, and looking at that ending I think I stopped at the perfect time?Anyway, what I liked about it was of course the MC and how she perceives the world. Her chapters were such a delight. Cool timeline trick too. I tried watching a bit of the anime but wow they just used CG for everything, I like the voice acting of the MC though. I’ve also been slowly reading A Regressors Tale of Cultivation after someone talked about it here. I think it is slightly better in terms of translation quality/writing than RI (which I’ve read only 1 volume of) but I’ve not really been hooked yet. There’s nothing that’s turning me off though, so still going to stick with it. I’m at chapter 63 of that (8th cycle I think)
>>25252030I'd recommend you finish off Spider, because her perspective and inner monologue are still enjoyable even later on, as the plot moves from dungeon survival to the larger overarching conflict. Even when it seems like the series is jumping the shark I found it consistently enjoyable.
>>25252040I get it, but knowing the shape of the plot, I can’t really see myself reading 10 more volumes. Maybe after a long break, when I’ve forgotten some details. But these were quite enjoyable (whenever it was in MC PoV), I agree on that. Personally on an enjoyment scale I’d rate it way higher than the Bookworm series, but that’s just me. This series encapsulates for me the definition of what light novels are for.
How do people write on for millions of words about something? I think of a setting and a plot and my mind traces the resolution to it as quickly as possible.
>>25252081I'm in the middle of writing a chapter right now. I was going to cram a bunch of plot into it to move onto introducing the next arc, but instead I'm writing a comedy scene that's going to take up the entire chapter. Oh well! It's a web novel, all that matters is that each chapter is entertaining. It's 100% the kind of content that would get edited out of a manuscript for tradpub, where wordcount is limited.Just stop and smell the roses.
>>25252081i think to write a million words of the same story you have to be a gardener style of writer rather than an architectpersonally i prefer if the stories i read are written by architect style writers who know what they’re doing but if the gardener style writer can incorporate callbacks and execute well planned arcs that’s the best thing if you don’t know what these styles mean just google them
>>25252081Properly establishing the necessary elements and actors and developing them until the pieces are ready to fall in place takes time. I'm 350k words into my story at the moment, but considering the events still left before the end, that's maybe 15% of the scenario.
>>25249800Why are anons here so determined to shit on white room? Every time I pick up a random story on RR, half the time the author doesn't even bother telling where the scene is set, whether outdoors or indoors.Seems to be standard.
>>25252062Too bad you read what's likely to be the best light novel out there, it's pretty much downhill from there. Some other series I enjoyed were Eminence in Shadow, Slime isekai, Mushoku tensei, Silent witch, the Alchemist who survived, and though the writing is worse, I love the vibes of Abilities Average.
>>25252110>Why are anons here so determined to shit on white room? They aren'tIt's /wg/ who doesPeople here have defended whiteroom
>>25252110>>25252122Okay, I'll bite. What is white room?
>>25252126the dude explained it in the second sentence holy shit
>>25252112Not touching Mushoku Tensei. I like the anime of Re:Zero, is the LN good?
>>25252097Bro, your inciting incident? Your complication?
I'm writing feMC magic academy sloppa how over is it?
>>25252158It hasn't even begun buckeroo
>>25252158Make her an archmage and you have an infinite money glitch
>>25252158>feMCthis is gonna be great im excited to read it anon. i hope theres lot of yuri and feet
>>25252145Difficult question. I enjoyed the anime at 1.5x speed, but getting through the LN depends on just how much you like it. I tried reading the first volume and just couldn't, dropped it a third of the way in. It's one thing watching someone be dumb, dense or cringe for a couple 20-minute episodes. It's a whole different ballpark during a few hour reading session. Your mileage may vary.
>>25252158Make her a futa
>>25252126It's when you are reading a chapter, and there is no indication where the scene is set. So, it might as well be set in a white.>>25252135To be fair, my definition was boilerplate. Some people argue for an extended definition of white room.Like a brief mention of the location isn't enough, and that there should be an explicit description, and the setting should actually interact with the scene, e.g., if the scene is set outside, there should be a mention of wind blowing leaves. Or if set on the beach, there should be waves crashing>>25252122I was pro-white room for a long time, but these days I feel like maybe a bit of visual description of the stage is nice. I think it can be used to worldbuild, and stuff like if you set a scene in a dirty tavern, you can indicate the tavern is falling on hard times and imply it is part of some crime organization.
is fmc acceptable if it’s yuri?
What are gu?
>>25252217Daring today, aren't we?
A person interacted with their opponent. Movements were made and more actions were performed. One gained the advantage over the other, then there was a reversal. Back and forth it went until one was more exhausted than the other. Who would be the victor? No one yet knew. Only time would be tell. This wasn't the first time nor would it be the last. They were both elite in what they did. An interloper appeared and both were startled. It had become a three way. Now it was even less known who would come out on top.WHITE
>>25251937>The funny thing about negative reviews is that more often than not, they accrue the most upvotes. As a reader, I skip over 5 star reviews when evaluating a story. I find that most of the time they have nothing interesting to say. Yeah bro the grammar and spelling is on point, no mistakes, what a fucking surprise, the author is passed 6th grade English. The vast majority of readers, myself included, have absolutely terrible taste in fiction, so why should I care that somebody thinks this is the top 1% of formulaic slop? But a negative review implies that somebody at least gave enough of a fuck to get upset about a story and brave the backlash that comes with violating the five star review hugbox.>>25252231Is this sex?
>>25252234>backlashwhat backlash? It's unfortunate you can't comment on reviews though, it would be fun to read.
>>25252217It's actually the default
>>25252237Maybe backlash is a strong word. Some people are conflict averse and speaking about their negative opinions can invite/require a discussion or defense they didn't want to engage in. Some people are aware of how review scores can impact success and thus hold their response because they don't want to harm a creator. Most people, myself included, probably just don't give enough of a fuck to elaborate on why they dropped a story, especially if they feel like they can't explain well enough to give meaningful feedback. "It didn't vibe with me, 3/5" feels like the kind of comment that an author would bitch about, I'd expect them to bitch about, and I'd feel bad that I upset them with my half-baked opinions.
>>25252217If there are any homosexual relations in a story, I assume it's dogshit by default
>>25252276based
>>25252276Filing this one under Based
>>25252276yup that’s why RI is dogshit, it tries to disguise its homosexuality by constantly turning men into women but it’s all gay
>>25252300RI does not discriminate. You're just homophobe and transphobe.
>>25252030kumo seems to be a darlingeveryone loves kumo
>>25252300uhh does the RIfag know this? cuz lmao if true >>25252341yeah, this prosefag loved kumo too
>everyone likes kumo because kumo has a very entertaining personality and narrative voice

>>25252081I could write endlessly in my setting, as the magic system is basically theorycraft bait.
>>25252208I have realized I don't have the capability to white room. I know exactly where every scene is happening in my writing, and I make damn sure the reader knows the whole time. As they constantly interact with the environment.
>>25252276This would exclude Dune, because the Baron Harkonnen is a paederast
>>25252375I constantly point it out as the>It's that the weird chinese fetish story where the MC turns dudes into women so he can lust over them without feeling gayguy
>>25252447>not dune though, dune's coolNah, it's dogshit
>>25252217That's the only way it's acceptable
>>25252430>jain shin hallowthis name is something like Miura Namgoong Weijonf
What makes a good power system? Numbers go up? Endless theorycrafting with classes? Cultivation and the Dao? Simple Magic Circle rankings?Personally am a numbers go up dude because it hits my dopamine right but I'm curious what others like since everyone here is so eclectic with their tastes.
>>25252300There is also traditional homosexuality in ri, like the gay orgy arc, and men getting pregnant. But neither of those incidents (directly) involve fang yuanIt's only when it directly concerns Fang yuan that men turn into women
>>25252451I wouldn't be surprised if the writer's into it as it's very sus that it happens more often than it should (2 major recurring characters, one of which was a woman originally, plus two other characters turning into women briefly), but it's not like Fang Yuan ever has any romantic or sexual interest in any of them. The closest he gets to romance is with normal women. As the story never seriously entertains the possibility calling it a fetish story is a massive reach; I have the feeling it's simply a very common chinese trope. Something like LOTM for instance has every other villain being a genderbent demoness getting stronger by having sex with men, and even a genderbent demoness love interest in its sequel.>>25252522>gay orgy arc, and men getting pregnantBoth played for laughs, same as the okama immortal in the northern plains.
>>25252574Fang yuan and bai ning bing dual cultivate in bed together, and bai ning bing moans loud enough that an old peasant lady notices
>>25252238>It's actually the defaultI'm not sure you're aware of how much ts yuri is out there.
>>25252574>Both played for laughs>It's a joke bro!
>>25252601And that's also played for laughs, with said "dual cultivation" creating exactly zero sexual or romantic tension.Again, I concede RI flirts with the idea a bit more often than it should, but never seriously enough to devolve into actual fetish fanservice territory.>>252526362 (very funny) chapters out of 2300. What else would you call it?Is Berserk also gay erotica because Guts gets raped as a kid and Griffith sells his ass once?
Fang Yuan has eyes only for dat fishussy
>>25252663YOU CAN'T JUST ADD "USSY" TO THE END OF WORDS, YOU COOMER RETARD. HOW WOULD YOU EVEN FUCKING PRONOUNCE THAT WORD? "FISH-USSY?" "FIS-HUSSY?" "FI-SHUSSY?" IT MAKES NO GODDAMN SENSE. FISH DON'T EVEN HAVE VAGAINAS THEY HAVE A PAPILLA. I SWEAR TO CHRIST EVERY TIME A GAY MORON LIKE YOU BUTCHERS THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND SAYS SOMETHING LIKE "BUSSY" DO YOU KNOW WHAT I PICTURE? I PICTURE A CITY BUS AND SOME MORON LIKE YOU TRYING TO FUCK ITS EXHAUST PIPE.
>>25252685>I PICTURE A CITY BUS AND SOME MORON LIKE YOU TRYING TO FUCK ITS EXHAUST PIPE.This nigga's never seen dragons fucking cars
I gave up writing should I also kill my self?
>>25252695The last resort should be to write fetish content at least
>>25252685>HOW WOULD YOU EVEN FUCKING PRONOUNCE THAT WORD?klō-ˈā-kə
>>25252685Pepussy
Favorite lesser known webnovels?
>>25252208Ah, that makes sense. I tend to like a moderate bit of scenery in both reading and writing. Enough to ground everything and make the image clearer, but not so much that it comes across as jerking off your descriptive skills. Treating it like a spice rather than meat, so to speak.White room is fine in my eyes if the location isn't all that important or it's a common spot that's frequently visited.
>>25252514Numbers going up is usually what I find least compelling; I've run enough TTRPG campaigns to really think about numbers going up and the fakeness of "difficulty". So often the goblins get replaced with goblin kings get replaced with demons get replaced with dragons or whatever; the numbers go up but the texture doesn't change. Sometimes there's a boldness in the escalation (something like TTGL comes to mind with this kind of scaling) but usually it's just stale.I really want the ability to be surprised by the author. Sometimes this is vague/flexible powers that the characters can exploit, and other times this is narrowly or explicitly defined things that get synergized. I liked the early parts of HWFWM cause new powers got revealed and they were usually pretty fun and synergistic, before it became quite so masturbatory. William Oh is my current gold standard for fun power system bullshit.
