I was in college and heard that the town library would give you a library card if you had a student ID. Unfortunately I was in the middle of a horrible depressive/mixed episode at the time -- unshaven, hadn't showered or slept, dirty wrinkled clothes, etc. The librarian at the front desk asked for my address for the card, and I tried to tell her that I was a student so my address was on campus and not a permanent residence, but somehow what she understood was that I was homeless. Her face tightened up and she said in a low voice that I had to leave or she'd call security, and she asked me not to come back. I didn't go back for several years as a result. I wish I was making this up.
