This book is incredibly mediocre and uninteresting. Why are so many people recommending it? It's like the literature equivalent of chicken tenders with no dipping sauce.
i know for a fact every single artist ever has that thought at least once
>>25251327It's got dipping sauce. It's just McDonald's barbecue dipping sauce that was made from the cloned stem cells of an aborted fetus from 1965.
>>25251331Yea but this time it's true
>>25251327UhWhat's wrong with it though aside from the fact that you didn't like it?
>>25252039Over half the book is stupid battle royale bullshit but told terribly. I didn't care about any of the characters at all either. It starts off ok enough but then almost halfway through the author decided "you know all this worldbuilding I was doing, fuck that shit, let's have a giant medieval style war out in some forest, but it's also an academy style test so doesn't really have any meaning or weight". It is incredibly shit. Plot points happen not because they feel natural, but because it feels like that's what needs to happen for the story to continue.>Break the chains! Break the chains!>"Erm, welcome to the heckin resistance"Maybe if I was recommended this book by a child I could forgive it, but it's adults who are telling me it's great.

had this suggested by coworkers which has put me off, and I feel like it's just YA shit because le reddit preaches about it
Re-read the series last year. I would never have liked the first book if i hadn't read it at 14. The second book is an incredibly entertaining pulpy space opera though. The third is not as good but still pretty okay, i feel it was somewhat rushed because the author was more interested in writing about Gold intrigue and families over giving basic worldbuilding on the lowcolors or, you know, actually writing about the revolution in a series about a revolution. But overall it's just that, an okay pulpy ya-ish series about teens doing a revolution. Not really self-insert anime level cringe as some of the critics say, not something on the level of Dune as some of the fans say.The second series is another thing entirely, it's a pretty decent space opera that i can actually take more seriously. It still carries over some ya-isms but nothing really bad. And Lysander is a genuinely fascinating character. It's telling that the redditors like the second trilogy way less.
>>25252140>Yea it's meant to suck in the beginningCope. Books should be written interesting right off the bat. I don't fall for the meme of "you gotta read a couple for it to start getting good"
>>25252119The battle royale part is really bad, it's just the author ripping of Hunger Games to try and get his book published. It's telling how the first book ends with Darrow saying he's gonna go to the "Space Academy" or some bullshit, teasing another battle royale but in space, then the second book opens at the end of the battle royale and gets to what the author really wanted to write. If you liked the beggining then i can reccomend you the rest, the first book is really shitty. It's a fun series.
>>25252422The first book is still fun if you're not autistic tbf
>>25251327Waifus, I guess.
>>25251327Did you like this early scene?>At the story's outset, 16-year-old Darrow is a rash, intelligent, dexterous, newly-wed Red helium-3 miner. Darrow and his wife Eo are publicly whipped for visiting a restricted underground forest. With Mars's ArchGovernor Nero present and the event being filmed, Eo sings a song protesting the Reds' enslavement. Nero has Eo publicly hanged. A grieving Darrow illegally buries Eo
If you don't like whippings, this is not the book for you:>Darrow and Virginia amass an army by freeing slaves using House Minerva's flag. When Tactus tries to rape Nyla, Darrow has both Tactus and himself whipped, earning his army’s loyalty.

>>25253175The only enjoyable part is the very beginning and the reveal after he leaves the underground Red area. The battle royale in the forest is a chore to read, which is crazy considering how rushed it is. Unfortunately that is the majority of the book.
>>25253341Yea the first one. Are you retarded or did you just not read what the thread is about before you joined?
>>25253654THEN READ THE SECOND ONE YOU ABSOLUTE FUCKING RETARD

We're discussing the first book and how bad it is.>But the second one is better!I don't care, I've read the first one so far based on a recommendation and it's bad. Just because the second one might be better does not change the fact that the introduction to the series is incredibly weak.
>>25254323What's your favorite sff book written after 2000
>>25251327I also read this trying to decide if I wanted a nice edition of it. Seemed like it was a bunch of YA nonsense. The interesting part was the beginning where there's some hint of an insurgent IRA type story against the oppressing classes, but nah, our hero is going to fuck off and leave the losers in the mines to go do a magic school type adventure (everyone likes Harry Potter bro get in on that money) with rival factions and the poor snot nose is going to learn how to fit in with the upper class, blah blah, same old shit. There's some Hunger Games type competition in that part as well just to copypaste as many other trends as possible. I was actually on board with a straight up insurgency tale, tell the kids to assassinate the rich instead of just having a wank about le horreurs of le crapitalism.
>>25251327>Why are so many people recommending itNormalfags spend one book or series to read throughout the entirety of their lives and they roleplay as if whatever megapopular work of media they consumed was the pinnacle of human creativity.
