What the fuck is this? I have no idea what I'm reading or what's going on.

Can’t wait for Max Lawton to translate this book. The current translation is garbage.

Based on the title I’m guessing this is a book about the Russian city of St. Petersburg before it became canonized

Read up on the 1905 revolution.

Maybe you should have thought about that before you opened it up

>What the fuck is this?
One of the greatest novels ever made
>I have no idea what I'm reading or what's going on.
That's often part of the fun. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 are the best, keep at it.

I think an important thing to maybe contextualize this is that um there is an instrument of criticism and meaning called {the emblematics of meaning} that bely made previous to the publishing of petersburg which is to make the claim at least that theoretically what bely does as a writer in that text does have some context which is not to make the claim either that because of bely’s instrument of theory all the things bely does are super awesome or either that a critic would able to party ignore the context of theory to inscribe an additional inscription and often this negotiation is the site of strife that heidegger talks about happening at the clearing and further to do is to follow one of de sade’s injunctions to contextualize yet farther the specific duties to symbolism as a profession that bely was at least theoretically pursuing in the crafting of such a novel

Doing my best. I definitely feel like I'm reading something truly unique, it's an interesting reading experience, and I enjoy a lot of the prose, but some things just go completely over my head.

are you reading the notes at the back of the penguin edition? they're helpful if poetry/history/political references are too obscure. if you're just talking about how odd the inner minds of the characters are, that's just something you gotta get acclimated to.

I'm not reading it in English. I realize how misleading the image I attached to my original post is now.

One of my favorites. Symbolist novels are marvellous.
