Beloved fantasy author Christopher Paolini takes issue with Nolan's upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey, sc. the line>You're pining for a daddieWas it a mistake for Nolan to use Emily Wilson's translation as a starting point?

>>25260135yeah this is gonna be a disaster. The movie looks so fucking bad from the trailer and all the actors look like retards. Goysloppified odyssey for the masses, whatever
>>25260135Look, that's pretty gay and all>Christopher Paolinibut the guy that changes one letter in the word 'dragon' and calls it a day probably shouldn't be allowed an opinion on word choice.
>>25260135>Was it a mistake for Nolan to use Emily Wilson's translation as a starting point? They did what?
>>25260135Think this movie flopping will lead to a reappraisal of the Assante version?
I will never understand why people put so much stock in movies. I am seriously convinced at this point that movies are just a lesser art form in itself, and that because you are so limited on what you can make, that you can't make anything worthwhile or genuinely great with them.Especially in the form of adaptations. I mean it's like reading literature translated. Why would you want to read something that was translated by someone else, than just learning that language to read it yourself? The same applies with adaptations. Why would you watch a person's interpretation of a book, than just reading the piece of literature yourself?
>>25260135This thread was just on /tv/ so I'll post here the same thing that was posted there. It's an issue with story consistent dialogue. Ursula Le Guin's essay makes this case fairly clear. Here's the excerpt and the PDF link. Most of this PDF, by the way, is just white space and introduction. You can read the essay proper in under 30 minutes.https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/luminist/EB/L/Le%20Guin%20-%20From%20Elfland%20to%20Poughkeepsie.pdf
>>25261072the best movies are based on books but not marketed as such. eyes wide shut never claimed to be bringing dream story to the big screen etc. and so could make it way better.
>>25261052>Think this movie floppingIMAX tickets were sold out last year. Why would you expect a Nolan movie to flop? Also the Assante version sucks. Take off your nostalgia glasses.
>>25260135>lived long enough to see paolini bashing nolanWhat a weird timeline.
>>25260255What the fuck are those?
>>25261172Zulu warriors finna dab on some Greeks.
>>25261172supposedly the laestrygoniansfunny threads on /tv/ ripping the trailer apart.
>>25261172Big guys
>>25261073This is a great essay and it strikes to the heart of why Emily Wilson's translation is such filthy, filthy dogshit.>Tell me the story of a complicated manDefuses the heroic atmosphere, from the very first line, and discorages by design any reverence that the reader might have for the content, which is precisely what's on display in the Nolan film.
>>25261073I hate James Branch Cabell so fucking much. I knew his name was going to pop up sooner or later in that essay.
