I was recently looking at Gustave Dore's artwork, specifically of Milton and Dante which are very popular and well known, the Empyrean piece being used for the pinned/closed thread on this very board. It got me thinking about other artistic works inspired by literature and poetry. I particularly like picrel (Reunion of Odysseus and Telemachus by Henri-Lucien Doucet). I also adore Ophelia by John Everett Millais, and The Lady Of Shalott by John William Waterhouse (inspired by Tennyson). I also like the painting of Byron in death, depicted as a Classical Greek. Particularly my favourite style is 19th century works depicting the ancient world, anachronisms of dress and hairstyles included. What are some of my fellow /lit/izens favourite art works related to or inspired by literary works?

Strange how the sole of the left foot is aesthetically pleasing, but the right one is very much not

I didn't like the Decameron, but some of the stories have inspired some good paintings

>Gustave Dore
There is an anon on this board that has an original copy of the The Rime of the Ancient Mariner with Gustave Dore's illustrations. I'm so fucking jealous.

JW Cook did these engravings of the four great Greek playwrights in the 19th century. All of them are really in the uncanny valley. Here is Euripides for instance looking stoned out of his mind.

Would've been better without Atena. It detracts from the scene to add the NON-LIVING concepts in such an emotive living scene.

Echo doesn't belong. At most she is referencing the echos of Hylas who was lost to the rivers while Hercules searched frantically for him. But would've just been better to make the echo look like the guy.

You guys are babies at this stuff.

What do you mean? The scene shows Echo and Narcissus from Ovid's Metamorphoses

> I didn't like the Decameron

I was initially going to gloss over this comment since literature is subjective but you piqued my curiosity. Why don’t you like it? Is it because there’s no moral message in most stories or something?

Too much ribaldry for my taste, though I enjoyed some of the darker stories from day 4 (the ones I posted paintings based off)
