This anthology is at over $1m and has a quite a few big names in it. How much is it simply because Sanderson has a story in it?

I still need to read

Sunlit Man
Reading Bands of Mourning right now
The Lost Metal
Shadows of Silence in the Forests of Hell
Fires of December when it arrives

Bros, I just can't hate Sanderson. The man successfully finished WoT (even if you don't like the series), never badmouths other authors or fans, built a multi-million brand on his own and continues to pump out (multiple) books every year. Sure, the writing's shit, but what the guy has accomplished, deserves respect.
>>
>>25262915
He didnt finished wot, he wrote the highest rated books of that series
>>25262911
Silence is a must before emberdark no memeing but its like 70 pages
>>
Is a series of books that are independent stories but set in the same world called an anthology or something else?
>>
>>25263037
An anthology is a publication of short stories by different writers.
>>
>>25262819
I want to give Brandon Sanderslop a shot, but the first chapter of The Final Empire reads too young adult for my liking.
Is The Way of Kings more mature or is it also young adult?
>>
>>25263040
Them being different authors is not part of the definition of an anthology.
They can be any collection of works. Including a collection of works from the same author.
>>25263037
So in this case anthology is fine, people will know what you mean.
>>

Agree with everything except this. He’s part of the mormon family, so not completely on his own.

'Mute' - Honestly, this one took a little while to get going. Wolfe was obviously going for two siblings sort of jabbing back and forth and getting on each others nerves, but it was unrealistic that moments of shared concern did not happen more often given the situation at hand. I actually thought they were making up the horror of the situation, because their feelings did not seem to match up with their situation at all.

It even gets surrealistic at the end, which is pretty unusual for Wolfe. That is also in my mind when the story gets interesting. I loved that they looped back to the house, the lack of other people, and the darkness at the end.

I wasn't sure what to make of it all though, except that perhaps the siblings were in hell. I also thought the potential incest angle at the end was a curveball. I usually don't look up analysis, and leave that to myself, but Aramani had a good overview of this one in my opinion.

Wolfe said that, to him, power is the chief appeal of post-apocalyptic fiction.
>“Most of us have very little control over our lives and our environments,” he said. “We must work to eat, and take whatever jobs we can get. Our votes do not matter because the men and women who are supposed to represent us could scarcely care less about our situations or opinions. We must live by the mores of our society–mores we cannot reshape; and we long at times for a simpler, rougher age.”

I do think that is why cozy catastrophes (usually meant pejoratively) are so popular. People instinctually want freedom from the chains that bind us and control over their situation... apocalypse fiction does that for our characters. Who doesn't want to chill in some bunker while the world goes to shit? All the people you blame for the downfall of society get to die, and you get control, freedom, and fun. You don't have to think about any of the downsides that might befall you or your loved ones.
>>
>>25263488
Can’t disagree with that
>>
I hate to be so viciously mean to pagespammerfag but I just can't take it anymore.

>>25264222
A space opera written by an American, duh.
What I mean is, one must not think of solar systems and council estates as topological twins. This is not one lesson that the American founders of space opera ever needed learning. This may not be entirely to the credit of the sons of the conquerors of the West, which is beside the point; of present interest is the fact that almost every non-American space opera does mismanage the rhetoric of scale. Even when a subversive intention is obvious (as with Iain M. Banks's Consider Phlebas), the risks of energy loss are very considerable.

I know this is likely part of the point of how every utopian society would think everything they do is the bestest ever compared to the past regardless of how stupid, but there's a very obvious reason thst military uniforms were often, simple and drab.
Another odd thing about this world palmer has built is how little credit is given to the past. In the middle ages people glorified the greeks and romans. Its why to this day, so much of that shit is everywhere. To be fair the medieval age has the dark ages myth. But fantasy also lives off the glorification of that time, it also happens to be the time with the "enlightenment" and the birth of science which we glorify too. Its just odd that this modern society depicted is the only one to not glorify any aspect of its past, and to take all the credit for ideas (flying cars, AI, space exploration) established long before its existence. Mycroft talks about Voltaire alot, but thats supposed to be the stupid simple superficial obsession of our modern liberal democratic socities. Not a society nearly thousand years removed from that.

Doesn't matter much beyond making the world feel simpler. I figure this is rationalized by "Utopia" but what really makes a Utopia different from our modern society when so much of that "Utopia" hinges on just being further developed or "progressed" compared to the past. Is it really the absolute absence of war? (ridiculous and borderline anime) If so we can ask a very simple question, if our modern world were completely absent of war, would we consider it a Utopia? I don't think so. Slavery can exist without war (it literally does in this fictional universe) so too can crime, oppression, discrimination, or just simple poverty (which is never talked about in this series for reasons i can only charitably assume are because nobody is poor)

These are the questions I have to make up off of 3 sentences to make reading interesting.
>>
>>25264839
It makes sense on the ecuetion sense, buti dont get what x is, and why the 3, if you know what they are in world maybe it would make sense? But its not a real life used formula to my knowledge maybe it is

Neal Stephenson is pissing me off with these retarded little pop-etymology tidbids he likes to include in his novels
>the word babble comes from the biblical city of Babel where people stopped being able to communicate
>the word blackguard comes from shoeshines who polished shoes with black lacquer doing criminal activity on the side
>the term "gin" comes from "perfume of genova"
>the term "go on the account" comes from the fact that pirate captains kept account of loot so they could split it up

Magic being able to change reality but not changing its user through repeated use is kind of gay.

Anyone else in a reading rut? By this point in the year, I've usually read around 15 SF novels. This year I'm at 5 and I think it's because every book I've read was just decent. Nothing awful, bad, boring, good, great, or amazing. Just decent.
Ubik, one of PKD's weaker novels and repeats several of his themes from Time out of Joint and Martian Time-Slip.
The Word for World is Forest, LeGuin's writing is still good but this one really beats you over the head with the Vietnam allegory. Something she admits in her foreword.
Parable of the Sower, once they got on the road I started to love this one. But before that, it's misery porn. Everything sucks, everyone gets raped, everything is stolen, yadda yadda.
Babel-17, well-written but such a simple and predictable story.
The Boat of a Million Years, despite loving long-lifer type stories (Lazarus Long, Mars Trilogy, and The Years of Rice and Salt are favorites), this one didn't quite hit. The first two-thirds are very good, but the last third is like trudging through a mudslide.
Here's hoping my next two novels (The Penultimate Truth by PKD and The Dispossessed by LeGuin) rouse me.

It's always a struggle to take time to read if it's not for work or college.
I hate it.

yes i was in a rut a couple of years ago. i wasn't in your exact same position in terms of favorite writers, but i found myself unable to find more books for my reading list and i felt as if i've read everything the genre has to offer (that i would be interested in).
i solved it by doing these things:
>going through the bibliography of my favorite writers (vance and zelazny, in the end i decided liked vance way more)
>pivoting slightly to an adjacent genre (in my case the best success i found was in horror and ligotti)
>using audiobooks to experience entertaining pulp i wouldn't devote my reading time towards, like lost fleet, red rising, dresden books, codex alera, wheel of time reread
>using audiobooks to experience entry level world classics that are like 1000 pages long and i would never read otherwise like count of monte cristo, three musketeers, or on the more serious side, anna karenina, war and peace.

i'm back to enjoying and savoring my reading time now. i'm doing a reread of dying earth from vance now, which i'm enjoying immensely, next up is treasure planet from vance, which i haven't read before, and after that maybe a boy and his dog
