Why is Stephen King so disrespected in the literary community?
Fake thread.
>>25263535They hate him because he spoke the truth
Because he’s not literary
Literary equivalent of Orville Redenbacher homemade instant popcorn essentially. I like some of it sometimes, but it's really just an unfullfilling, bloated waste of time usually.
>>252635351. His books are shit.2. Have you seen his retard tweets.
He sells. That's seen as non-arty.
>>25263691The truth that he‘s a whore?
>>25263535Mainstream popularity, and more importantly, broke out into other mediums. Not that he writes high-art, but they are very decent horror/thriller stories. Unfortunately this led people to immediately think of movies based on his books, rather than the books themselves. The average American probably thinks of him as a horror movie guy. To some, that bolsters his reputation, but for most literature enthusiasts, it tarnishes it. All said, he does have some fantastic novels, and they're (almost) always much better than the film version. But he did also crank out a lot of subpar ones as well in his cocaine years. If you read one of the latter as your first introduction to King, I would understand not wanting to read any more. Same with that period after he was hit by a car, the pain pills and internal rage changed up his style for the worse. I'm from New England so I'm biased. He really nails the locale, stereotypes, and culture. But if you're unfamiliar with it, a page full of "ayuhs" can turn you off. I think the biggest thing when it comes to King criticism is quality vs quantity. He flooded the market, which definitely watered down his legacy.
His supernatural stuff is cringey and lame. The Bachman books are pretty good thoughbeit
>>25263535He's a cunt who doesn't know how to end a story
>>25264155>he did also crank out a lot of subpar ones as well in his cocaine yearsWasn't misery written back then as well? It's often regarded as one of his best. It's the only one I have read so far, how do you think it compares?
>>25263535>Why is Stephen King so disrespected in the literary community?he upsets people on twitter.
>>25264532His coke era novels are by far his best.
>>25263535King isn't respected because he's a pulp fiction author who isn't well-read enough to be even somewhat literary unlike his legendary predecessors. He's no different than Koontz or Patterson but he HATES the fact that he's not on par with the all-time greats which is why he went on a tirade about how academia is anti-pop fiction. It's his own damn fault. Even before his substance addictions (hard drugs, pain pills, etc), his daily habit as an adult has always been to rot his brain with too much TV. And it's not even good TV, the man watches MSM national news crap!Ideally, King should be going outside and living life. Learning new skills and trades and hobbies, volunteering just to get out of the house, watching movies, and reading everything (good) he can get his hands on.I consider JJBA and Kirby and Lee's Fantastic Four comics and Kojima's video games more literary than King's work because at least those guys read and you can see it in their work for better or worse.
>>25263535unmotivated and disgusting bullshit. boring hatred of Christianity. having a punchable leftoid face
>>25263691King is right that a book should first grab your attention and be concerned with making you feel, but he neglects that a novel's literary merits are to make you feel AND think.>>25264893His face looks like that because of fetal alcohol syndrome. I work with kids and the ones with FAS have a lot in common with King:>poor impulse control>social immaturity>very angry>need a rigid structure to get through the day>friendly but way too inappropriate with strangers>creativeThere's a reason a lot of his villains are angry/impulsive/immature and possessive or shown to be "hungry". All art is autobiographical, as they say.
>>25263535>whybecause he shovels slop from the cesspool into words and people buy millions of these slopbooks and think it is "literature"
>>25263691This is true, but it's also reductive. Yes, when I look for many books I do so for the intent of excitement, adventure, and I tend to relate more with stories that mirror my life. I also read books to expand, and to understand. Sure, I like having fun reading something, but I also want to elevate myself and discover something greater. It does not have to reframe my worldview, but it is always appreciated when something I read offers insight into *something*.I understand where he's coming from but the way he phrases it he doesn't seem to view literature as being especially relevant. He phrases it like books are only for people to consume when they have nothing else to do. It's rather pessimistic, as though a writer shouldn't work to elevate their writing because it's not exactly what everyone is looking for.
>>25263535He looks like the 1800s irish chimp stereotype
Ghost writers, pedo shit, murder porn, libcuck thinking, hypocritical positions politically.
>>25263535King was a good writer, but hasn't been a good writer for a long time.He jumped the shark with 11/22/63.It's a boomer reminiscing about how root beer "just tasted better" back in his days.Doctor Sleep was an obvious cash grab by writing a sequel 35 years later to one of his most popular novels back when he was still a good writer. And he's currently better know for his twitter feed than any of the books he's written in the last ten years. Dude's washed.
>>25263535Quantity over quality
Cause no one buys those pseudo intellectuals' books.
>>25263535Revival was a good book
