Stop supporting book stores.
>>25265915Nothing wrong with that stand, pseuds here pretend to have read Joyce and Homer and real-life nice guys pretend to have read feminist books in order to score with arthoes
>>25265915No
But, anon, the book stores have cute girls.
>>25265941>Pretend to read Joyce and HomerThis really says a lot about you that you think reading James Joyce and Homer is some kind of superhuman feat. I'd venture to guess-timate that 60% of anons here have read at least the Illiad in translation, and maybe 35% have read Ulysses, while probably 65% have read Dubliners or Portrait. Also putting Homer and Joyce on the same level of "difficulty" is very silly. Homer in translation is not challenging in any way shape or form. I found learning Homeric Greek challenging, sure, but that is not what most anons do, nor has the average man who has read Homer. Ulysses is a challenging read, yes, but it is blown entirely out of proportion by those who attempted to read it having not read Dubliners, and more importantly Portrait, many not even having read The Odyssey, Hamlet, the Bible, and having not even the tiniest overview of Irish political history (Portrait, and the contemporary notes of the Penguin Modern Classics edition set the scene very well). Ulysses takes familiarity with a handful of texts to get the most out of it, but Homer? If you haven't read Homer because you think the two poems are some kind of Voynichian manuscript, you're only doing yourself a disservice. Order a copy of Richmond Lattimore's translation of the Illiad today, and thank me later.
>>25265915Nah just the women and minority owned and lgbtq+pedophiles friendly ones
>>25265941meanwhile, i've read it all
>>25265915Why would anybody pretend to read the alchemist
>>25266086You can observe anons rambling about classics they obviously haven't read every day here, anon, *especially* in all threads about /lit/ meme favorites, be it the Greeks/Joyce or McCarthy, Pynch, Nabby, Dosto, Wolfe etc. I didn't say anything about "hard", it's just a time investment lazy pseuds don't want to make while still insisting on airing their strong opinions...
>>25266180Come on anon. Sure, there are many like that here but there are still some who’ve evidently read some of these fellas.
>>25266142That's all of them
>>25266194Alright then stop supporting book stores.
>>25265915>So quirky! They're just like me!
>>25266183Yeah he's projecting.
>>25266142Barnes and Noble is okay in my experience, it's the independent bookstores run by millenials that tend to shove minority and faggot propaganda
>>25266183OBVIOUSLY it's not all anons that ever post about those books.>Sure, there are many like that hereThat's all I'm saying. Wasn't literal enough I guess.
>>25265915>"we pretended to read">the secret gardenI would throat punch someone for this. It's a children's book, and you can read it in a day.
>>25266086>reading James Joyce is not a superhuman feat>implying
>>25265915You can always tell these little subsections are put together by either:A. A vicious, malding lesbianOR:B. Some dumb bitch whose previous date or guy she was seeing either ghosted her or disappointed her in some fashion. A woman made this display.
>>25266216nah they're all wiseacre shite
>>25266360but of course
>>25266360>Male >Working in a bookstore Of course a woman made it. Only women work at Barnes and noble.
>>25265915>"books we pretend we've read">1984Didn't a vast majority of people read this specific book in school? Personally I never got to but I have listened to the audiobook narrated by Frank Muller
>>25266418you can immediately tell a woman did this
>>25266421Whether it was or not, I'm just mad they put that specific book on the pile
>>25265915New book stores are depressing, used book stores are cozy
>>25265941Go back
>>25265915I did read 1984
>>25266216>new bookstore opens up in my town>it's owned by a millennial woman >it's also opened for four hours a day on random days>owner spends most of her time viral marketing on Instagram instead of managing the store (or raising her kids) (or reading)>most of which seems to be "it's hard being a proprietress and mom!"It seems to be working, as the store is still open after two or three years (and most of the comments on her IG seem to be "I love shopping at your store!" tier replies). I've been curious about the store, but I have a job so I can't go.>>25266267Same with the Hobbit
>>25265915I'd rather make donations to Anna's
>>25265915>the hobbit and 1984 are too intellectualburgers are a disgrace of a race. soon nintendo press conferences will be too "elitist and pretentious" for them
I found it funny
>>25266303Finnegan's wake is a beast unto itself, but Ulysses is what most people are interested in reading. I have not finished FW, and I think that, unlike Ulysses, it is aptly rated in (in)comprehensibility. I am of the opinion that Finnegan's Wake is incredibly impressive piece of literature, maybe one of the most impressive feats of any writer, but is not a "must read" and is enjoyed as a puzzle, to be deciphered. I hope that one day I can really sit down with it for a few months and really delve into it.
>>25266816>Finnegan's wake>'
>>25266389Can confirm. Worked at B&N before COVID. Coworkers all women except for the manager and two incredibly obnoxious "trans-men". Shit sucked.
>>25266455Remember when B&N actually had places to sit down in their stores? The vibe is a lot less inviting now, but in my case it's unfortunately the closest bookstore to me (its situated in a local mall).Few months back over Christmas break went to Kentucky with my older brother Mason to hang out with his fience's family. Not even 10 minutes down the road from their house was a cozy bookstore called The Hidden Chapter. I spent hours there just vibing and talking with the owner who already knew my brother from his prior trips. Even got some books(the first three Red Rising books were a gift from Mason, then I got two books by Richard K. Morgan).TL;DR: Inde/used bookstores are just so fucking cool
>>25265915I never did. Anything worth reading is old enough to be out of copyright
>>25265915who HASN'T read most of those? many are things you'd read in school. well that's my story.
>the first three Red Rising books were a gift from MasonPoor bastard.
>>25267228Fuckers made you read Ulysses in school? Damn.
>>25265915I've read Haunting of Hill House and quite enjoyed it. I'll give it Five stars.
>>25267397no but that's really the only one that stands out as such. I attended a shitty rural NH school and read from this pile The Hobbit, 1984, The Odyssey, And Then There Were None, and Catcher in the Rye.
what about college libraries?

>>25267902That forcing Reddit Rising onto someone else is a form of abuse.
>>25267915>Reddit RisingLmao that's a good one. I haven't got anywhere close to finishing the books yet but would you mind telling me why you don't like them?
>>25266828Kek. It was autocorrect, which is responsible for half of the Finnegan's you've ever seen. I am admitting to phoneposting, but I don't know which would be worse in theory.
>>25267065good intern
>>2526753090% of those are made up, right?
>>25266086>I'd venture to guess-timate that 60% of anons here have read at least the Illiad in translation, and maybe 35% have read Ulysses, while probably 65% have read Dubliners or Portraitlol, lmao even
From the books I can make out we read seven of these in my american public school and if I'm remembering right I think we'd read all seven by ninth grade
>>25268623Nta but doesn't everyone read the iliad in school? That joyce estimate is way off though I've only read portrait and I've been on this board for 10 years. Liked it a lot though and will read the rest someday.
>>25268623"/lit/ doesn‘t read" has always been and will always be pure projection.
>>25268765"projection!!!" has always been a defense mechanism of pseuds who've been found out.
>>25265948they also have books
>>25267530imagine if these things had actual covers
>>25268623You can lol and lmao all you like, just because you don't read doesn't mean that most anons don't.
