been a while since I read it but as far as I remember the Nova trilogy nominally has a sci-fi plot about parasite-cops called the Nova Mob who run Earth via addiction while the Nova Police try to bust them, but Burroughs's real claim is that language itself is the parasite, a virus that got into us somewhere back in prehistory and runs us through word-loops we didn't pick (see Cormac's essay on the kekule problem) and the cut-up technique he was working with Gysin in the early 60s isn't a style move but the actual argument, an attempt to jam the tape and show you the seams of your own conditioning, which is why reading it for plot feels like nothing's happening, that's the point, the static is the signal, so the unlock is to read it like minimalist music/a Rauschenberg combine, watching phrases like the soft machine and the reality studio recur and accrete meaning by repetition. and also remember he's actually funny, a paranoid American standup more than a forbidding avant-garde monolith
