Walter Benjamin lived in the same era as Leo Strauss and Voegelin, and with his study of Adolf Harnack's Marcionism, what he was attempting was confronting such theology in order to argue "The Bible tried to immanentize the eschaton." This is precisely what both the Theses on the Philosophy of History and Critique of Violence are doing. He was not the aesthetician Adorno made him out to be, but a left-wing political theologian.
