About six months ago Merriam-Webster published the 12th edition of their English Dictionary. This is the first new edition in over 20 years.

The equivalent Oxford dictionary, the Concise Oxford English Dictionary, hasn't been updated in over 12 years.

Collins Essential English Dictionary was last updated in 2019. But because the publisher, HaperCollins purchased the rights to Webster's New World Dictionary and the American Heritage Dictionary, there's basically no other competitors anymore. The purchases are especially odd because HarperCollins is based in Scotland and their dictionary follows British use accordingly.

So who does it better? Merriam-Webster, Oxford, or Collins? Will we ever see a new Oxford Dictionary of English (not to be confused with the Oxford English Dictionary, a massive etymological work)?

Wiktionary mogs them all, even if it is dominated by comparativists.

what the fuck are those dots that appear on the sides of the pages?
>>
>>25275959
Finger indents to help flip the pages and identify which letter is where. Pretty common on dictionaries.

no not the thumb index dummy, i mean the red splotch dots on the pages

The big dictionaries don't get updated all that often, your picrel just got its 12th edition in 130 years, Concise Oxford is doing about the same and has gone over 20 years between editions. They only print them when enough words have established themselves in general usage or their previous edition has too much obsolete usage, times of lots of rapid changes in usage (like now) tend to cause new editions to be put off until things settle down. Print dictionaries are sort of dying but probably will remain a thing for a good while yet just because they offer a view of language at their time of printing which can't really be gotten any other way.

Oxford for my money.

The only thing wikitionary has going for it is being free. Terrible dictionary in every other way with no concept of scope and what information it should provide, tries to be every sort of dictionary at once. It is laughable when it attempts to document the nuances of usage over time.

I'm surprised no competitor adopted Johnson as a branding gimmick like all the American dictionaries use Webster, even if they're not genealogically linked to Noah Webster's original American-English dictionary.

As a redditor... yes. All of my yes.

Merriam-Webster has said there's probably never going to be an another edition to their unabridged dictionary put to print. That leaves only the full size oxford and the full size Collins. Shame really, but I understand. How many people ever bought them in the first place and how many would buy them now that everything is on the internet?

oh, you're retarded.
