I'm getting tired of this book. At first I thought the Ferdinand character was funny and endearing but now I'm on page 430 and so bored of his complaining. It's like the only emotion he is capable of is self pity. He never once experiences beauty, awe, sublimity, never once has an interesting observation that's not "I'm poor and life sucks." The only positive emotion he is capable of is lust, but even that is drenched in a masochistic self pity as he opines that beautiful women will never give him attention because he's a poor incel. It's a very earthly book.
>>25276802It's a great book, but that Ferdinand nigga starts getting unbearable by the end. Robinson was a scumbag too, although more sympathetic than Ferdinand despite in some ways being worse, but probably only because we didn't spend as much time with him. I don't know. I love this book, but I get where you're coming from. I'd advice you to power through and get it done. I feel it's structured in an odd way, in any case, so the satisfaction of finishing it isn't so much in the ending itself but in looking back at it, as a horrific thing you went through. The climax of the story is that little beautiful moment with Alcide in the cabin in Africa and the rest of the novel is a whirl of bitterness swirling around it.
>>25276841Yeah I'm going to finish it as I only have about 100 pages left
>>25276802Not saying you got filtered but you probably just don't get it.>never once has an interesting observation that's not "I'm poor and life sucks."Just try reading it for real this time
>>25276802But it's kino
>>25276802>He never once experiences beauty,Huh? Did you skip over the part where he was lusting after American girls?
>>25276802>I'm on page 430 and so bored of his complaining. It's like the only emotion he is capable of is self pity. But you can spend all day on 4chan.
>reading Céline in translation you didn’t read shit trust me
>>25277050https://youtu.be/Y99UqvgCmE8This is an insanely catchy song, I genuinely don't know what the lyrics of this song are about
>>25276859This. Insane take to have after reading that book.
>>25277275Explain then. What's the point of saying that and not offering a counterpoint. Because on every page all he does is complain about how shit everything is.
>>25277372>Because on every page all he does is complain about how shit everything is.You're too stupid for this book.
>>25277372Something you should probably keep in mind is that Celine was a moralist.
>>25277694You could provide a counterpoint, talk about some part of the book that contradicts my point, explain how I'm misunderstanding, but no... all you've got is insults. It may be that I'm too stupid for the book, but nothing you've said proves me wrong.
>>25277372the part about the town burning, the beauty of the scene of soldiers lighting a village then watching it from afar go up then slowly turn to ashes. Just off the dome, btw."Ça se remarque bien comment que ça brûle un village, même à vingt kilomètres. C’était gai. Un petit hameau de rien du tout qu’on apercevait même pas pendant la journée, au fond d’une moche petite campagne, eh bien, on a pas idée la nuit, quand il brûle, de l’effet qu’il peut faire ! On dirait Notre-Dame ! Ça dure bien toute une nuit à brûler un village, même un petit, à la fin on dirait une fleur énorme, puis, rien qu’un bouton, puis plus rien.Ça fume at alors c'est le matin."This is very beautiful in its own demented way but you would probably have to be demented yourself to get it
>>25278147Yeah but like I said he was funnier and more endearing at the beginning. Once he returns from America is where it goes downhill IMO.
>>25278166>Once he returns from AmericaI'm sure I've read this book and not that long ago, but for the life of me I don't recall him ever going to America. Did you mistype AfriKKKa or am I going senile and losing my memory?
>>25276802wtf he is literally me
>>25277122Not even joking, the lyrics are literally"I would like to see you in a pornographic film, watching action with your dick"
>>25276802That's normal. Some people take months or years to finish it and drop it multiple times because it's such a depressing and ugly book. That's the point. Celine was a misanthrope and so is Ferdinand. Things are slowly getting worse as the character ages and his disgust of humanity only grows. That's the voyage. Towards the end of the night where the ugliness and meaninglessness of life reaches its paroxysm. But to be fair, there's no real message in the book. Celine says it himself. It's more an exercise in style. The plot, the underlying philosophy about pacifism and human nature is secondary to his mastery of style and aim to make the language feel alive.
>>25278187he does go to america where he finds "the love of his life"
>>25276802read this and hardly remember it. I know I didn't like it when it seemed like something right up my alley though. I keep hearing the translation ruins it but there's no way it fucks it up this much. did not care for this book either and I don't know why it's regarded so highly and I never will.
