I had the realization that at the pace I'm going I could easily end up spending over 20000€ over my lifetime. More than twice as expensive as a lifetime supply of coffee.

If I had an e-reader and just pirated everything this would all cost next to nothing. Of course there would be the odd situation where you can't find a particular book or only shitty editions of it, in which case you can buy an online copy, which is still cheaper than a real book.
My main problem with this is that I've always had trouble properly focusing when reading on a screen, like on a laptop or phone. But maybe I've outgrown that by now. And I assume there are e-readers that have no internet access or other non-reading related functionalities so as to not distract you? I assume you can also make permanent markings and scribbles just like you on the real thing?

Of course it's a hit to the social aspect of books, where anyone can just take a glance at your bookshelf and know what you're about. With this you have to actively mention this stuff which is a bit icky.
And there's also something pleasant about physically having the thing in your home rather than on the "cloud"...

What's /lit/'s take on this debate?

I opt for both. I'm reading on my goyPad stuff that I know I don't care to own. Having physical books is however strictly better. Especially when you want to go back to check something it's so much faster to flip pages back than use electronic devices for it. It's still better to check if a library near me has the book instead of downloading it because at least for me, I retain information way better and I feel like I'm actually doing something IRL when reading physical books instead of being glued to a device.

Yes but e-readers are somewhat trash for this

Just make an account on MAM, buy a second hand kindle, jailbreak it, and install koreader on it. Boom, you now have all of the books you want without any if jew bezoz's bullshit
Alternatively you could just read books on your phone which you already carry with you all the time and which you already use to read social media and news

I bought a cheap 40 Euro Kindle a few years ago. The screen is definitely better than a phone or a laptop. But I still haven't touched that thing for the last 3 years or something. The main reason is just that my memory of everything I have read on there is pretty bad. The book just vanishes from your mind after you have finished it. It doesn't sit on your shelf and you don't get remembered about its existence. When I want to search or reread something in a book, it is just nicer on a physical copy. Other people that I know that tried an e-reader share a similar experience.
I would recommend to just buy a cheap e-reader and try it for yourself. I am sure there are some cheap options out there, which should give you a feeling.

I bought a kobo clara bw and don't regret it. I don't like reading on my phone, personally. Now I just pirate 90 percent of my books and get the other ten percent from the library overdrive system.

It's actually done wonders for how much I read and it travels with me. I do buy some stuff in physical format still - I bought House of Leaves physically and buy reference texts the same. If you do buy a clara, get a case.

>Alternatively you could just read books on your phone
The screen is too small + it has internet access on it which is a distraction you have to constantly fight off. It's totally unusable for me in this regard.

If I'm getting an e-reader I'm keeping it permanently offline.

With kobo they annoyingly force you to make an account to activate the device, but after that you can turn off wifi and use it as an offline epub reader forever. The only online features are an ebook store and some public library integration, no web browser or anything that would be distracting. There might be smaller brands that don't require an account but some of them run on Android so they might have browsers and app stores that you wouldn't want.
Don't get a kindle.

Kindle paperwhite vs kono Clara, which one?

There are color versions of both too but I don't see the point of spending money on it

kindle removed 1984 from users devices.
>>
Why don't people just use the library?
>>
>>25278116
Speaking as someone who works at a public library, all they have is

>Thriller/mystery/suspense fiction
>Romance novels
>Self-help books
>Celebrity biographies

Kobo, and it's not even fucking close.

It days kobo is not compatible with windows for file management. But then would I transfer files from my pc ?
>>
>>25278232
You just plug it in with a USB cable and it works like a basic external storage device. I don't think there's a way to do it wirelessly, but I've also never looked.
>>
Is it worth getting Kobo clara color?
I'm fine paying additional 20 bucks just so I can have multiple highlight colors
I've watched multiple reviews and it looks like a solid system

My mom uses the shit out of hers, just has to replace it because it stopped holding its charge after about six years

She said it was very easy to transfer her books to the new one
