Fellow /lit/bros of countries with almost no works of literary merit, how do you cope with that fact? I have not picked up a book in my own language that doesn't have prose like unseasoned rice and the author's desperate attempts to ejaculate symbolism into it. It's like they're all written to be studied for exams and dissuade the current generation from every picking up a book again.

Often countries with a smaller literary output have a greater output in some other field, like music. But also, at least some of what makes a work highly esteemed is the ability of its country of origin to advocate for it. Those countries with "almost no works of literary merit" are usually smaller, less able to promote themselves, and also receive less interest from abroad. It doesn't mean they have no literary works but there's just not a large community of people who care about them.

>>25279278That’s pretty much latam in a nutshell. There’s a few good ones like Donoso, Marques or Unamuno but for the most part it’s pretty rough. It usually boils down to muh society, muh colonialism or muh magical realism that’s actually we live in a society. Granted, you could make good works with these themes but for whatever reason it just feels so heavy handed with latam writers

>>25279278I am Dutch. With some minor exceptions we have no significant literature to speak of. Luckily I am not mono-lingual. I read books from other countries, and I have no qualms about my country not having its own set of writers since the world has so many.
>>25279970I am from the balkans, man. You compare Borges, Bolano, Marques and Rulfo to that?
>>25280083You have fucking Rembrandt, van Eyck and Bosch. And Hugo Grotius.

>>25280093Yes obviously we have many great contributions to humanity which is why i am not particularly insecure about it. We just don't have much literature. Rembrandt, van Eyck and Bosch are painters (and arguably van Eyck is as much Belgian as Dutch, although those nationalities were not distinguished back then). Hugo Grotius wrote in latin, like most great Dutch thinkers (Spinoza, Erasmus).

>>25279278Can't relate, I'm Indian. The language is beautiful itself so prose does not take effort.
>>25279278American here. It's admittedly difficult, but at least we have some. We're no India or China, all those billions of people producing nothing of value would be so embarrassing.
