If you don't know German and French you're not fully human.

Learning German rn and surprisingly it's much harder than Japanese, the latter feels like a conlang by comparison in terms of grammar and syntax. The amount of pointless uses of sich alone is maddening

I am thinking about learning French for reading purposes. They had some solid authors. But I don't know how long it will talk to actually be able to read books. Is there any point in using books to learn a language btw? I don't care about pronunciation and listening. But books still seem kinda interesting when there is so much material out there. I only speak English und German currently.

>But I don't know how long it will talk to actually be able to read books
It depends on what you mean by read and which books you want to read
You could 'read' L'Étranger within a year of studying 2 hours a day

The question isn't which European languages you know. It's whether you can name something in any language that couldn't be named before you named it. The language you inherit shapes what you can see. The language you make is the evidence that you've seen past it.

Being hyper literate and intelligent in English is all that matters. Intermediate literacy in other languages is fantastic, but you'll never be as intelligent as your main language. Average lifespan isn't long enough to waste time becoming hyper fluent in multiple languages, you could have spent that time studying something else.

People will brag about learning new languages and then have the math/science knowledge of a middle schooler. Zero sum game plebs.

Ooh wie er sich einscheisst wegen diesem simplen wort. Ich meine, wenn man sich etwas reinhängt ist das alles gar kein problem mehr. löl

In school I had 4 years of french but we were out of control and just disrupted class and didnt learn much at all. Today I regret how much of a fucking idiot I was back then. But I was a kid and that government school was fucked already.
I can still somewhat understand a little here and there but I couldnt form a sentence to save my life.
4 years wasted af but doing good in that class was social suicide with the dysfunctional weed smokers all around me.
I am interested in learning it again.
The french at least have some spicy authors left.
I read
>with their hearts in their boots
Its by some french former actor guy that died of alcoholism. That novella was awesome. Would love to read it in french someday.
Reading camp of saints at the moment anf boy howdy did that guy call all the faggotisms we have suffocating us today. Its actually scary to read that shit just to know we have been born into a world that was destroyed decades ago and we can barely tell how much was already lost. Fuck.

Just think of reflexive verbs as a whole unit. Bedienen is one word, bedienen... sich, or sich... bedienen is a separate word with a separate meaning. German is not that hard; the main hurdle is how they can split verbs. But at least for reading you can just cheat and skip to the end of the clause. Let me rephrase actually the main hurdle is vocabulary, that's true of any language. Grammar can be a pain but it is relatively easy compared to memorizing thousands and thousands of words.

Can you learn this sentence?
>Où est Charles?
Où = Where
est = is
Charles = Charles

>>
>>25282518

>>
>>25282518
Yes. Also I recommend thinking of studying in terms of time, not concrete goals. So instead of "I will read three pages, memorize thirty new words, and review three hundred words", just say "I will study for 45 minutes". If you put in the time you will learn the language, simple as.
>>
>>25282535
I don't think of learning in terms of any goal, time-wise or otherwise, I think for me personally it's counter-productive. I do it purely out of enjoying the process itself. I want to zoom in and focus and have the world beyond melt away, really dig into a small thing, the page is the universe, it's like meditation. It can be done with knitting, model airplanes/railroads, fly tying, fishing, painting, math or whatever. When you're in that zen space then you're doing it right. Studying for goals takes you out of that.
>>
>>25282535
Also, it annoys me that the word "learn" is ambiguous. You are not using the word with the same meaning as I do. This alone is reason to learn a language, English is trash.
>>
>>25282589
As we all know, English is the only language with ambiguities
