"Skilled in all ways of contending" is terrible, "harried for years on end" is a pointless addition; "distant" men is weird, maybe distant peoples, or foreign men. In his "deep" heart?? Generally an overwrought feel to it. At least there's an attempt at metre, though inconsistent.Lawrence is almost unbelievably bad, literally nothing is done right. What's with the rearrangements? He starts by the characterization of the Muse from line 10, instead of Homer's "The man", totally misses the point. "innermost?" "Grievously?" "Sport" of their customs, "good or bad???" He doesn't want to "redeem" himself but strive to save his life. "Blotted out" is very colloquial. And of course the metre is completely butchered.Fagles at least keeps the semantics, it's a very close translation that reads like prose. Fair, but a bit boring. Wilson is the strongest rhythmically, it rolls off the tongue. No hexameter of course, but good. The word choices are rather plain and too modern; "holy town" reads unintentionally comical, "where he went and who he met" is really a bit too much simplification, she's erring on the other side of Fitzgerald, but let's keep in mind that Homeric language isn't fancy at all. "Poor" fools is a bad colloquialism, Homer doesn't really express pity there, but condemnation. Overall it's a perfectly valid rendition with its own strengths and weaknesses, only someone who probably doesn't know the Greek alphabet, let alone the Odyssey, would call it an "anti-intellectual atrocity."

I think people whining about this are spoiledThe majority of our primary source documents on Aztec history and culture still don't have English translations, and for some, it's impossible to find purchasable copies of or online scans of even the original Spanish or Nahuatl versions (EX: I've been searching for Hernández de Córdova's "Historia natural de Nueva España" for weeks with no luck finding it in any language or format, for example)I would do horrible things to get even flawed translations of more of them, and yet people get furious about what seem to be mostly phrasing difference between 4 different english translations of one Classical work instead of being happy you have so many different ways to compare and contrast the meaning of the text
