I'm trying to get back into reading, but the internet has unequivocally raped my attention span. I'll read one page of a book, check my phone, doomscroll for an hour, jack off to fat chicks, play some of a pirated Pokemon game running at double speed, read another page, and before I know it the day has ended. The last novel I finished by my own accord was the final Harry Potter book nearly 20 years ago. I probably have ADHD, but I don't meet the threshold to be medicated according to an assessment.Has anyone else here had to overcome this? Any tips for focusing on reading and avoiding distractions?
>>25281168Stop watching porn or give up bro.
>>25281173You're probably right, but I would have killed myself by now were it not for porn (totally not addicted though)
>>25281168if you have ADHD get a prescription for meds
>>25281216>I probably have ADHD, but I don't meet the threshold to be medicated according to an assessment.A psychiatrist had me fill out a form to gauge the severity of my symptoms and said I wasn't bad enough to diagnose with ADHDSometimes I fantasize about getting meds for it and being able to turn my life around
>>25281168Just read porn?
>>25281235Do I look like a woman anon
>>25281168Go outside on long walks. Don't bring a phone.
Start with not masturbating for one day
>>25281168Read on a train.
>>25281253if don't fap it all week then i end up gooning for liike 12 hours on the weekend tho
>>25281248This is probably good adviceHell, even just sitting outside with a book may be a good start>>25281255>trainDo I look like a European anon>>25281253Occasionally I'll go one day without, but never more
>>25281168while typing this wall of yap out I realized that it's longer than a twitter post so here's the TLDR:just read one page per day, or even half a page, or even 1/4 of a page, but you must read every day>Any tips for focusing on reading and avoiding distractions?there are no tips here, you just have to build a new habit through consistencyif a single page is too much then read half a page, yes it's embarrassing as fuck but the baby steps is how you actually build the habit, just make sure that each and every single day you read half the page, it costs you nothing in terms of time, you are supposed to shit at least once per day so read your page while shitting, do it as the first thing in the morning if it's easieralso goes without saying but you need to pick up something that's interesting, if you are into games then read the history of some genre or a book on game design analysis or whatever, if you are dealing with social media addiction then you can try books that analyze how media impacts our lives and all that, you don't need to start from books that an "adult" is supposed to read, read whatever the fuck you want, harry potter is fine, percy jackson is fine
>>25281276>Do I look like a European anonDon't you have a single train close by?
>>25281276Walking encourages both slow, contemplative thought and observing the present moment. Also it encourages your thoughts to flow better since you are in literal motion. It's the most /lit/ activity there is next to actually reading books. It could help to frame it as an adventure. How many video games involve walking outside? Taking walks is a real open-world adventure. You can bring a pack with a water bottle, food and other supplies. You can take this as casually or seriously as you want. If you take to it, you can try hiking and backpacking. You will get to know your town and neighborhood much more intimately. So many things to unnoticed when you just drive past them in a car.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKF8IzBmp74
>>25281279I appreciate this anon, I find it takes longer than average for me to form positive habits but it must be possibleJust a matter of overcoming the instant-gratification/dopamine beast>>25281287Do I look like a city slicker anon(The nearest one is nearly two hours away by car)
>>25281299Truth be told I hate being alone with my own thoughts without distractionYou sound like you know what you're talking about though, walks would probably be good both mentally and physically
>>25281168I think you need to try reading something you enjoy more. I relate to your post a lot, except sometimes I read a whole book in one day (or a week, whatever, depending on the length) because it hooks me and delivers way more continuous dopamine than scrolling does.
Read easier shit to get back into reading, and start with the pulps.

If you stop looking for something to blame and take accountability, you will have a very simple choice presented to you.
>>25281216do the meds actually work for that? I've found that I just needed to get the habit in, which took some time but now I can read for about 4-6 hours, whichever the text, with some rests in between, meds or no meds; with meds, actually, its worse because I hyperfocus on sensations. Any other adhd anons had this problem? As for actual tips for OP, listen to this anon >>25281379 it is going to suck, there will be pain but it will be worth it
>>25281173I should stop, but I do most of my reading after that distracting urge is set aside.
