Thesis: Literature is best when it edifies and uplifts the spirits. Who doesn't feel inspired by Moby Dick or William Blake?

The psyop of literature communities is convincing members that depressing atheistic nihilistic melancholic doorstoppers are something you should work through because of "advanced prose" or "symbolism."

This is a recent trend coinciding with rising angst in the tryhard meaninglessness lovers who follow in the Enlightenment tradition of anti-traditionalism. Take the /lit/ top 100 aggregate chart. 71/100 books are pessimistic and have a negative outlook... 71%!! And 54 of those 71 books were written after 1900!

Every other book you get from a /lit/izen was written by the most psychologically beaten-down generations in all of the history of the entire world.

>atheistic
Stopped reading there
You guys are a fucking broken record
You bore me to tears
And worse of all you don't read. Ever

Why can't he be right?
>>

I've read 34 of the books on the OP chart. I will now be reading Beatrix Potter and there's nothing you can do to stop me

>God exists so labor alienation doesn't and also we need to see things from the perspective of a pre-Renaisance and mostly illiterate and defunct ruling class
>>
>>25282248
I dunno, why not? I don't get the hostility and total refusal.
>>
>>25282254
Because it has been repeated for years here and it starts to get tedious once it feels like astroturfing to gaslight us into being happy slaves
>>
I dunno, I found Dostoevsky uplifting in his conclusions.
>>
>>25282227
What is OPs point exactly? That reading classic literature is too hard, that their content is bad because it isnt some disney fairytale, and that youre a misanthropic tryhard for enjoying those works? Wow this is some really revolutionary stuff and definitely not some midwit trying to cope that hes outclassed by anons with real taste
>>
this obsession with quality- quality content, quality discussion- is everything i hate about this site in current year
the fact that you and people in this thread can't sit down and enjoy lit fic written in current year is just proof that you only pursue hobbies if they have some kind of ephemeral gravitas that you have deluded yourself into thinking it not only goes outside of academia and its cognates, but also it the mark of a well rounded person. you don't care about good, human stories, all you care about is if people think it's the equivalent of a deer on the wall. you're horrible people

>ummm why are contemporaries biased towards works writtne in the past 150 years????
>THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE
Bro...don't look up your favorite writer's favorite writers...you'll be shocked

The ideal 100 books would all be Tolstoevsky. Christ is Tsar!

OP here, Fair enough, the Russians get a bad rap but some of them are alright
>>25282328
My point is, I don't get much out of miserable literature. Probably because I don't agree with the assumptions of the authors personal philosophy, it seems like /lit/ is more for the average gnostic or antinatalist.

>Thesis: Literature is best when it edifies and uplifts the spirits
Not really

>>25282223
>>25282304
That's called cognitive dissonance and you're a gay baby for letting it cuck you this badly.
>>
>>25282605
You genuinely sound extremely sheltered and, worst of all, possibly female. Modern life is pared down to the least painful (which is not to say most happy) parts, anyone who's never lived outside of it is extremely myopic. Read, and understand, Ecclesiastes.

This but unironically

What's with these posts and threads trying to persuade people into erasing and defacing 4chan culture and adopt the same commercial wholssome culture that permeates the rest of the internet?

here's the rating I used to tally the 71/100 number. Red for definitely depressing, yellow for questionably depressing.
>>
>>25282214
God doesn't exist. If losing your imaginary friend makes you feel nihilistic and depressed, that just demonstrates your own immaturity.
>>
>>25282663
Kek, you gotta love how jeets try to blame a defunct sub that was proped by 4chan to begin with.

>works that are overtly life-affirming through negative example are "nihilistic" and "depressing"
