Communists support this - they don't care that the newts will take human jobs, they think the newts will join them. The women try to civilize the newts. The church develops special newt doctrine. Eventually the newts rise up becouse they need more living space and start sinking landmasses, slowly wiping out humans.First country to sink completely is Great Britain.
i like it but it gets kind of onerous in the second half

I liked that the first portion imitates shlocky horror/adventure books and the second goes full on fake scientific articles and fake newspapers, then the finale goes into the author talking to himself and rewriting the ending.The portions in first half that are narrated in Van Toch's voice are especially amazing in czech, becouse he uses informal czech with heavy influence from english, german, dutch and other languages.The change from narrative to non-narrative also mimics plot progression. Van Toch discovered the Newts and used them for personal gains to collect pearls, he doesnt treat them like humans but one feels like he loves them like pets. The moment Van Toch dies the corporation and stock holders take over and turn it into mass slave labor and the book stops having narrative.
