>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

how about
a novel about a character doing really obvious scams
but the twist is he's not a scammer at all
but he attracts other scammers to him and unknowingly fucks them over because they think he's scamming and see his success, but really he's just providing good products/services/etc or doing things for other reasons (like offering tours for advertising) and the real scammers jump on it and crash and burn
think it could be interesting

>>25283167
I don't think there are any that follow all 3 of his rules
Reverend Insanity, Regressors Tale, Mother of Learning, Shadow Slave, Lord of the Mysteries and Super Supportive are like 2-2.5.
But all of them have power systems with generally consistent rules if that's your criteria.

No, my gendered magic system is not based on reproduction but in my lore men have access to magic related to the sun while women have access to ones related to the moon. It's not scientific at all in story and much more spiritual but to keep things simple x chromosome = lunar while y chromosome = solar and while men can technically do both women have a much easier time accessing lunar while completely locked off of solar.

I don't know if modern audiences are going to appreciate such a system. I honestly don't even know how to explain it without being potentially offensive but it has to be this way because she learned it from her father who had to play both roles after her mother died.

This isn't uncommon in xianxia where men often embody yang energy and women often embody yin energy
Like, it's nothing new and if you matter-of-factly explain that men have one kind of magic and one women have another anyone sane is gonna take it at face value and the people who aren't are gonna find some other reason to be indignant regardless.

There’s been a lot of discussion about Western vs. Asian writing. But honestly, outside of Royal Road, I can barely tell the difference between the two.
On Scribble Hub and WebNovel, they all have the same AI anime covers, the same recycled tropes, and the same ESL/translation-style prose.
Maybe it’s because a lot of ESLs write directly in English, so they ended up blurring the line that way. But to me, the biggest divide isn’t East vs. West, but RR vs. everyone else.
And I’m not a fan of RR’s writing style at all. Even if you don’t write like light novels, you could at least write like traditionally published American commercial novels. They’re easy to read and have tight pacing, instead of whatever meandering, Reddit-humor-ass nonsense you’re going for.

That's good to hear. Though mine's a bit more complicated where men are constantly fighting between yin and yang while women excel at yin. I have to somehow explain it without offending people because a man literally taught her how to use it.

eastern wizard enjoyers
would someone explain the cultivation concept of "reaching heaven through violence"?
RIfag, now is your one (1!) time to perhaps consider renouncing your ways and being useful for once over the past 7 years!
>>
>>25285772
This is a far more Western concept than it is Eastern, particularly via Western occult groups (Crowley specifically). The very very very tl;dr ultra-condensed version is that one aspect of it is achieving your ends through raw willpower and volition. "Fake it til you make it" brought onto an ontological level.
>>
>>25285775
Yeah I actually ask because of Elder Scrolls haha but I see the obvious on-screen theme with cultivators. I admit I do not "get" the concept of "commit mass murder to achieve (some form of) apotheosis".
>fake it till you make it
Sure sounds like mantling.
>>
Guys go read maidens of fall by hungry. Getting better and better each week.
>>
>>25285779
>Sure sounds like mantling.
It's closer to that. The "Commit mass murder" thing is a misunderstanding. "Violence" as it's used in the 36 Lessons is Kirkbride echoing Crowley's use of the term, which he used it in regards to interacting with people's "Will." Which sometimes is done by actually killing them but you can do it in all sorts of ways if you're crazy enough.
>>
>>25285781
I read enough of Necroepilogos to know I won't like her(?) works.
>>25285783

>you can do it in all sorts of ways if you're crazy enough

>>
>>25285787
>Is this a reference to the Walking Ways? If not, please elaborate.
The Walking Ways are one way, yeah, but you can also just engage in weirdly specific symbolic rituals (Skyrim starts with one that unshackles you from fate), or just lying all the fucking time (Canonically how Cyrus becomes the HoonDing).
>>
>>25285789

Hey do you know anything about Harpocrates or signs -> rituals?
>>
>>25285779
it sounds like TES because the Psijics are just cultivators. Observing the wheel sideways, seeing "I" and maintaining your self-determination as a figment of the dream is pure cultivation type shit.

Hard magic this, system that. The only actual rule is that plot + time + resources = characters getting stronger.
LitRPG: Grind EXP to reach higher levels.
Xianxia: Absorb Qi to break through to higher realms.
Dragon Ball: Scream louder to gain a new hair dye.
Kamen Rider / Shonen anime: Watch tear-jerking backstories to unlock new drip.
God of War: The blood of your enemies makes your weapons stronger.
Iron Man: Smart dude keeps building stronger toys.

lol I did forget about the Psijics there but you are goddamnned right about them being THE cultivators of TES
As other anon and I talked about though, that specific phrase did not originate from the Psijics. And the Walking Ways present other methods of "ascension".
>>25285802
If you choose to escape with Ralof into Helgen Keep during the tutorial of Skyrim, he unwittingly completes an aurbic ritual through the unbinding of your shackled hands (untying the Prisoner from fate) inside of a Tower (symbolic of the cylindrical wheel, within which all of reality occurs), where a chandelier casts the shadow of an eight-spoked wheel (strengthening the symbology) upon the floor of the same ritual chamber containing a deer head casting the shadow of dragon with spread wings, directly in the middle between the bear emblem of the Stormcloaks and the Imperial sigil.

Like the other guy said it's not really an eastern thing. Well it is but only much more recently. "Defying the Heavens" and "Fate Transcendence" is mostly inspired by bideo games (especially jrpgs where you kill god to save the world) and Shonen manga and modern eastern authors applying rule of cool to interpretations of Buddhism and Indian mythology like Asura (who in the west are translated as "demons" though it's more complicated than that).
Pic related is the PvP sect in Where Winds Meet which is a super edge lord take on Buddhism where you kill people to take on their karma for yourself.
These kind of ideas don't show up in 20th century Chinese works like Legend of the Swordsmen of the Mountains of Shu. In those days the protagonist always exemplified benevolence and righteousness and harmony with the Dao. If you were a bad boy you were part of a demonic sect.
