Why is a book about a horny priest and a goat lover so long?
>>25285876Hundreds of pages describing roofs of the15th century Paris.
>>25286412This. Les Miserables is famous for breaking up the action with about a dozen essays, and he does the same thing here. I'd hazard a guess and say he does it in his other books, too.
>>25286412>>25286419This to a large extent. The basic context of the book:VH was really annoyed at the way modern developers were destroying all the nice old gothic architecture in Paris. He even wrote a pamphlet about it called "War on the Developers".He told his publishers he would write a novel basically igniting love for gothic architecture. They gave him an advance. Then he forgot about it. Eventually they got pissed off and gave him a deadline so he wrote it at high speed and it was Notre Dame.
