>McCarthyWho? The hollywood screnwriter?
>>25286603He's america's novilist
>>25286602DFW>CM
>>25286602Jestermaxxing to mog uncs cortisoldiaries.
>>25286602A bit of a clickbaity title. CM kept trying widely-praised modern novels and finding them a waste of time and gradually tried them less and less and eventually said screw it.IJ just happened to be the point at which he said screw it but it could have been something else.(OK, that's not quite fair because IJ has been praised more and longer than a lot of stuff so it was quite likely to be the last straw but still the overall point stands.)
>>25286646wrong>Britt doesn’t hear from McCarthy for several days. Almost a whole week of terrifying silence inches by. She’s worried sick about him by the time the phone finally rings. She races to it. It’s McCarthy alright, and he’s in a dark mood. Bleak and beleaguered, ornery. Britt’s rarely heard the love of her life so lowdown, perhaps not since she’d broken his heart a decade earlier. “Cormac, I can’t make out what you’re saying.” “I said: it’s drek. It’s drivel.” “Drek” and “drivel” being McCarthy’s lowest insults for writing, as opposed to his highest praise, “very fine writing.” He’s talking about Infinite Jest. For a polymath who read more than 10,000 books, it’s likely the worst reading experience of his life. “Lady, am I just that out of touch?” he asks. “How can people like this?”>Cormac McCarthy would never read another new novel again, he told Britt. And he never did. He stopped paying attention to the literary world altogether. Infinite Jest was the last new novel McCarthy would ever read. The 1,104 pages that broke the literary lion’s back.
>>25286646Disengenuous post.
>>25286647How does that refute what I said?
>>25286674because ij was very specifically the book that made him stop reading contemporary literature altogether due to how shit it is, it didn't just happen to be the last one he read which you're trying to assume
>>25286646>>25286674You're pretending David Foster Wallace's embarassing tome was somehow incidental to his sentiments rather than a direct and significant cause.
>>25286686>>25286689If you think about CM's taste (what he thinks literature should be), then sure, he might think IJ is "drivel" or whatever, but there are lots of other novels he will also think are drivel. What would he have thought of John Barth? Or Barthelme? Not to mention. say, Sally Rooney? Does e.g. Ishiguro deal with "matters of life and death" by CM's standards? There must be plenty of other examples at least as good, but I don't read much contemporary fiction either. My point is just that it didn't have to be IJ. It could have been something else.
>>25286602>>25286647McHacky mogged by DFW
>>25286702>it didn't have to be IJbut it literally was
>>25286702>If you think about CM's taste (what he thinks literature should be), then surepeople on 4chan in general need to be doing more of this. They're always bringing up one writer/musician/whatever's opinion on a different artist and using it as some sort of proof that the artist in question is bad. Artists are often too self-absorbed to have a worthwhile opinion on anything too different from their own work
IJ feels less literary but actually raises much more interesting questions about society. Philosophically McCarthy is at the level of critically acclaimed comic books
>>25286745>raises much more interesting questions about societycan you list them for the thread?
>>25286745This says a lot about our society
>>25286602>minimalist hates maximalist novelC'est la vie, bro
>>25286751like....uhhh....what if we're watching too much TV???
>>25286759maximal shit
>>25286779Let's hold off until you have actually read it
>>25286786TV...TV is just like a drug man im addicted to it like I'm addicted to these jazz cigarettes!!!
>>25286706>>25286617>>25286603Dfwbabbies seething.Reminder that dfw worshipped McCarthy. If he didn't rope himself 18 years ago he surely would've after this article.>>I regard Cynthia Ozick, Cormac McCarthy, and Don DeLillo as pretty much the country’s best living fiction writers (with Joanna Scott and Richard Powers and Denis Johnson and Steve Erickson being the cream of the country’s Younger crop).
>>25286745>Philosophically McCarthy is at the level of critically acclaimed comic booksLol. This what reading dfw and thinking ij is philosophical does to retards. Not one ij reading retard can explain what the Judge meant in his famous 'war is god' speech; or can only explain that which will give away his retardation.
>>25286838>man...is violent. War is Heraclitus...change. it always was. And shall always be so. War. So we rape. We rape. We rape children and kill innocent people. O algo
>>25286647lol he literally got filtered.
This thread is like watching Marvel and DC fans fight each other. They're both garbage
>>25286702>Yes, this thing happened, but something else could have happened.Woah, really makes you think
>>25286781Yes, you are very witty and clever
>>25286647>>25286702>“Lady, am I just that out of touch?” he asks. “How can people like this?”I enjoy the work of both, but McCarthy is indeed out of touch if he is incapable of understanding why a book about hollow, obsessive consumption (whether it be drugs, media, etc) would be relatable to people born in the West in past 50 years.
>>25286717this kek>>25286883these kinda threads are more common nowadays. you can tell that so many wannabe literature nerds are deep down still comics/vidya/anime nerds and they've imported so much of their gullible, neckbeard baggage to this board. zero penchant for anagogy or hermeneutics, just glorified toy soldier larp battles kek
>>25287067You are literally doing exactly that, right now.
Too many zoomer undergrads in this board.

>>25286602DFW is a bit of an odd duck because all the gen x’ers you talk to about DFW are like ‘ Didn’t that bloke write bret easton ellis fan fiction, i remember reading that and a separate peace back in my prep schools before i graduated as a doctor of anthropology from william and mary’ which is like an entirely different type of prep school hang up type stuff than the rhode island post air force stuff that seems to be cormac’s but DFW has got to be regard as probably an inside source about gen x hang up, personally i think that frederick the great fought successfully against the british but at the cost of partitioning poland but polish messianism is only a tangential issue to the topic at hand which is DFW, nobody understood the way that footnotes and endnotes and concluding notes worked like DFW, one thing i will say about ole cormac’s position and from mine own position which is that DFW really did emerge from a literary rubbish of the 80s novel and this also being infuriating because also armed with the wit of mildewed copies of the national lampoon dating back to the 60s the other thing is that the power of writing ought not to be dismissed or overestimated either for that matter but DFW wasn’t playing around, DFW had read the secondary literature on richard taylor, presumably, and also DFW is with self-awareness emerging from this rubbish heap of books which isn’t a rubbish heap but just self help books and notice that bret easton ellis didn’t get cormac to stop writing cause like i said DFW at DFW’s best is serving some type of modal logic but the logic is drive by wittgenstein and derrida who seem in some ways deeply unsatisfied to be occupying or in the situation even adjacently of DFW geometrical tornado prone midwest honestly the way out of DFW is through ulysses but that also is the long way around and involves going through the mines of moria and that sort o thing anyway though what is a novel is important here also because one feels that ole cormac does have a definite idea of what constitutes a novel and does also so does DFW and that is part and parcel of that whole specific generational crisis argument over values or something like that culture of idea discussing ole cormac is from the rhode air force or something like that
Well Cormac McCarthy crossed state lines to sleep with an underage girl in a state where she wasn’t legal, forged a birth certificate for her then fled to Mexico to evade the FBI
>>25287286I don‘t know what this has to do with anything except supporting the notion that to write meaningfully one has first to live an interesting life.
>>25286674I weep for how fucking retarded the average 4chan user is these days.
>>25286706blood meridian is good but maybe it was accidental like his intent was to write a hack western but accidentally sth good came out. i didn't read infinite jest yet tho the pages are fucking huge takes forever just to read one and i'm kind lazy like i read before bed and i don't want to get sleepy halfway through a page and have to wait forever to get to the other side.

>some guy didn't like a bookWAOWWhy is 4chan and to a larger extent society filled with people like this? It's like the masses need some authority to validate their opinionsWho gives a shit
>>25286647Ngl that makes me respect DFW even more. McCarthy writes the most graphically violent western fiction, but he can’t stomach a few footnotes? Lmao
