>"Dad books" — which this article, and some publishing insiders, use to describe "serious nonfiction" books across biography, current affairs and business and economics — are reportedly in a free fall, with sales declining every year for the last few years

so people are buying less pop history and pop econ? good.

my dad used to read words now he watches black people react to and approve of things he likes on youtube on tv
>>
Literature is dead. The world has returned to oral tradition, embodied in the short video format of instagram and tiktok.

That's really based homie, tell your dad he's exempt from the fanum-tax this year.

he sounds like a big fan of prog and jazz fusion
>>
I have absolutely no problem with reading (especially quality literature) becoming esoteric.

Do you want the barely sentient goycattle masses to become even more stupid? Because they will drag you down with them.

Doesn't follow given there have been aristocratic readers for millennia alongside an overwhelmingly illiterate population
>>
>>25287410
But back then the population didn't have today's powerful technology. The damage the masses can do today is unbeliveable.

That's why we use AI to keep them in the Matrix

I won't make any assumptions about your father's ethnic quiddity, but for older generations, in recent decades where it feels everything they grew up loving has come under attack from external groups and declared obsolete or even "never good", it can be extremely healing to be presented with evidence that those with even the simplest tastes and most reason to be hostile toward established tastes, can still find things to appreciate or be amazed by. It's validation that they themselves have not gone crazy, and that it is a sickness in the world instead.

Derek Thompson is one of the most clueless NPCs I've ever heard try to act smart on a podcast.
>>
I only read non-serious nonfiction

Speaking as someone who works at a library, I can confirm

Very few men read our nonfiction, and most of it is self-help and health material aimed at women

I don’t think it’s that complicated. Most boomers (most humans really) are mindless cattle and will consume what is placed in front of them without question. If the electric jew in the living room is showing images of black man making funny faces at tiktok videos, that’s what the boomer will consume. In addition, boomers grew up in a world that didn’t allow them to construct mental defenses against such psychic warfare, so while we might view the reacting negro Instagram man with doubt and derision, to the boomer mind it’s like having morphine on demand in their living room.

>tells me "it's not that deep"
>creates an easily dismantled schizophrenic theory he thinks is more plausible
nobody is forcing a browser to click on a youtube video
they deliberately open it by choice, out of dozens of other options also afront them

That’s like saying no one is forcing heroin addicts to shoot up again. No one is holding a gun to their head, sure, but these are demonic forces at work and modern television and sns apps have been designed to hijack all of the brains dopamine receptors

>change the rules by making child rape legal
Bold move but I think it's worth it

I started reading Tom Clancy. Fucking based. Would like more of that.

>books used to be the best no nonsense way to learn about a subject (say gardening)
>now we have the internet
This isn't as world shattering as you think it is.

The difference between men and women is that women buy books for decoration, or so they can post pictures on social media of themselves reading.
>>

I'm pretty sure that anon's dad was reacting to videos of black people reacting to hearing rock music for the first time and finding it good
>>

Some people are inquisitive and want to spend their lives hearing new albums and seeing new movies every year.
Some people want to partake in a conversation about culture.

Other people just want someone to tell them that one thing they liked when they were a teenager is the best thing ever.
This is who the "nice young person listens to Led Zeppelin for the first time" genre for youtube video is for.

These “dad books” were always an intermediary resource. Something more than a newpaper article but more economical than a multi-volume piece of research or other academic scribery. They are mostly nullified by the wealth of public information the internet provides, unless the author has a strong thesis.

This is the Sapiens, Elon Musk bio, Why Israel Deserves Your Money type airport slop. Calling it serious nonfiction is retarded, what the fuck is the frivolous nonfiction then?

My friend and I watched a video of a black guy react to an episode of Invincible and we we're transfixed with now he had zero ability to take the information given to him in the episode and infer what happened. He saw a character (Thragg) carry a skull with a big hole in it. Then you had a flashback with Thragg talking to his emperor, followed by another flashback of a third character hiding in the shadows with a big knife, stalking the emperor. He couldn't connect the dots and figure out who the skull was and how he died. We were amazed at his thought process.

The problem is all of these pop nonfiction books are about WWII, and sometimes Rome. You only need so many WWII books, anything new is just retreading old ground. We need some books on different wars and periods of history. I remember reading a nonfiction book recently on a secret American invasion of Russia after WWI to try and stop the Bolsheviks but it ultimately didn't come to anything. Still that's a real part of "forgotten history" that most people don't know about.
>>
>>25287376
People get their pop history from YouTube and TikTok now which is way worse than people reading Freakonomics a few decades ago. Most history channels don't provide sources for anything, it's just schizos rambling. And when they do provide sources it's still heavily biased politically like Hank Green or Adam Conover.
>>
>>25287410
Except unlike feudalism where peasants got all of their information from the Church, a centralized authority, people get it from TikTok.
