People are quick to see flirting where it doesn't exist. In a story I wrote there's a scene where a girl is taking care of her best friend when he's sick. He asks her for a kiss to get better faster (he has feelings for her and is being sneaky) and she kisses him on the cheek twice in a row saying he'll recover even faster than he would with just one kiss. My readers thought I was shipping them or hinting at developing feelings blah blah but in my mind it was just an innocent friendship moment. Female readers did the same shit not just guys. Why are readers like this?
>>
If you weren't writing the girl to be a dumbass, you wrote a character positively and excessively responding to blatant flirting. Most people would interpret that as flirting back.

Also, European hands typed this.

I wasn't writing her to be a dumbass. It was just cute friendship rapport
>>
>>25288235
you yourself admit he is flirting with her whats the issue here?
>>
>>25288264
Yes, that half is correct, but her response is meant to be viewed as playful but fully platonic
>>
>>25288235
Are you a virgin or autistic by any chance?
>>
>>25288271
No to both
Why?

>It was just cute friendship rapport
Except he was flirting. And she should have known that if she's not a complete dumbass. If she knew and responded positively without any explicit warning she wasn't flirting back, that is definitionally flirting back. It might not be sincere flirting, but it would still be flirting.

Next time have her say "no hetero" or something.

She does know, but since she's already turned him down she feels, reasonably, that it's his responsibility to view everything she says and does through a platonic lens. But yeah, I dunno. The entire story had the feelings be unrequited so I don't know why readers expected that to suddenly change.

None of this is true. You didn't write such a story, let alone have 'readers' that were confused about it
What the fuck is the point of these schizo threads?

>She does know, but since she's already turned him down she feels, reasonably, that it's his responsibility to view everything she says and does through a platonic lens
So, to be clear, you expect readers that exist an entirely separate universe from this character to get a message that she isn't interested when her friend hasn't?

Let's set aside expectations from your readers for a second. Your male character is at best being immature and at worst being a pest by flirting with someone who has explicitly expressed disinterest. Meanwhile, your female character is at worst leading him on and at best sending mixed messages by knowingly responding to flirting from someone they aren't interested in. Friends can insincerely flirt with each other as a form of banter. I've done it myself. But where one party is actually interested and the other party knows it, that's not healthy because people can easily get the wrong idea. You should know that. Your characters, depending on their level of maturity should know that.

In this case, your readers got the aforementioned wrong idea.

She didn't mean it as flirting, though. It wasn't romantic, or sexual. It didn't even occur to me that it could be viewed that way.

>You're such a great friend. I hope we can stay friends forever. You really put me in a certain good mood zone, as a good friend should.

a kiss, i think, is famously one of the most ambiguous signs in literature

Yep. Right up there with cohabitation.

It's so funny to me people can make their identity and life story about what they feel like fucking. Like imagine someone "finding themselves" as a furry and then we need a vlog to find out actually they're into gangbangs now but wait they used to be a bottom but now they've started experimenting with being a bottom and their identity is based on diapers and pretending to be a toddler now.
1) Who the fuck cares what you're fucking and why?
2) Imagine thinking this is the most interesting aspect of your person that you need to update random people about.

You women are such bad faith liars its hard to believe anything you say. Flirting but totally not flirting because she enjoys the attention but has no intentions of reciprocating feelings to a non-chad isnt as cute and wholesome as you think it is and everybody can see through your crap.

> Op: every reader thinks my characters are flirting! They're totally not!
> Everyone else: bro that's either flirting or leading him on
> Op: N- no! She thinks he should interpret all her actions as platonic! Even though she knows he likes her!

Op, I'm sorry to tell you this but you might actually be autistic if you can't see this...
>>
>>25288235
Even if I just take your own evaluation of what you wrote
>i wrote a character subtly flirting

>people read this as flirting

>but I didn’t write them as flirting

But you said that the character has (poorly) hidden feelings and is doing this to subtly flirt. Your post pisses me off because you seem to be mad at your readers for getting near exactly your intended reading out of it.
>>
>>25288948
That's not what I said. The guy is flirting, but the scene isn't meant to imply that the girl returns the feelings, nor does the story ship them.
