What are your favorite book covers from sci-fi/fantasy? Are the books themselves as good as their covers?
>>25313747I absolutely adore all the Josh Kirby covers for Pratchett's novels (pic related for example). There's more than a little nostalgia involved though since Discworld is what got me into SF/F when I was young.
Is this general still shit? Just curious.
>>25313747>Are the books themselves as good as their covers?Pic related is a yes.
>>25313741Why are female scifi authors like this?
>>25313747Most of the time (excluding special editions), if the cover is good or beautifully illustrated, the book is shit. If the cover's ugly/bland the book is ok.
>>25313842If you refuse to have sex with a woman, especially if it's a pretty one, chances are she will start psychopathically hating you. Happened to me twice
>>25313896Because homosexuality is a sin in the eyes of God, anon.
>>25313747I think I have a new fetish but don’t know where I can find a giant squid gf
>>25313747the goat
>>25313791yes obviously lol
>>25313747
>>25313747Michael Whelan's cover for Second Foundation. I never read the book, but the character looks super cute.
>>25314309You mean pic rel? I have the 91 Bantam Spectra edition.
>>25313921Twitch in the form of a vtuber
>>25313741The brazilian hardcover special edition of the Foundation Trilogy is absolute kino and i feel bad for my fellow gringos who won't get to have it
These special hardcover editions of Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos
>>25314328That's the one. She looks like a great character to go on adventures with.
>>25313842Women's power comes from how much they can toy a man around with their pussies, so naturally they become upset when one doesn't want to fuck them
>>25314351>>25314355>>25314361Soulless ass. Just about every original printed cover looks better, especially the Japanese ones.
>>25314370That post was a woman complaining about a woman forcing herself on a man. The opposite of what you said.
>>25314414>Literal coolest thing ever>"Erm, this fucking SUCKS actually, chud"Kys faggot with no taste
>>25314495>taste>what an edgy high schooler considers cool
>>25314416Maybe mods actually simply prefer people who actually talk about books they're reading relevant to the thread verses displaying psychopathic tendencies towards somebody talking about books
>>25314507Kill yourself, scum. You ARE a SPAMMER.
>>25314507Did he make you feel like a girl anon?
>>25314516Kek
>>25314351I think this looks like shit but I'm biased because half the reason I even gave Hyperion a chance is cause of the original cover. I also don't like them printing stuff on the edges of the pages.
>>25314506Literally what about that is "edgy"? Are you just throwing words around anon?
Flatland fucking SUCKS!
>>25314495I mean you could easily Google the Japanese Hyperion cover and then know instantly that you're not only wrong but retarded.
CARL THE CRAWLER
>At the start of the next thread, I will post five (5!) short story reviews!Seems that didn't happen
>>25314556This has "I bought a gaming computer in a black case with RGB lights, but I keep it red because black and red looks sick and matches my black and red peripherals" energy
>>25314556>armor made of literal blades>red glowing eyes>body silhouettes in noir lighting>black and red armor>red lightning tendrils emanating from logo>space cross>armor made of crystal diamonds>space magic hexagon>sharp pointy everywhereOMG SO COOL ANON!EDGES EVERYWHEREWAIT UNTIL xXdemoneyes88Xx SEES THIS!
I finally finished this collection of Fantasy! Without further ado...>A More Sudden RevengeVery short. A young girl flees her village and climbs a mountain to seek sanctuary from an older lady who lives alone, drawing the woman into her conflict. A woman her village deems a "witch".>Squad MageProbably my favorite. A short military fantasy about a young female squad wizard, who was poorly trained in minor magicks and carried around a sack of clay-explosives. Felt like something out of Black Company/Malazan. I liked the ending where she outwitted the enemy female mage and gaining temporary invulnerability, hurled her satchel of grenades at the enemy wizard, saying, "Eat fire, bitch"."Grab your socks and drain your cocks, we're out in 5!">Charnel Mouths and Sightless EyesShort fantasy about a dead wizard's apprentice exploring his master's abandoned tower, along with a bandit couple and a strongman. From illusory treasure chests with endless skeletons and illusory tentacles from the darkness, along with a surprise at the end, this was a fun romp.>Midnight at the Skewered PigTwo thieves and killers of man look for the shelter of a reliable cave on a mountain path, only to find a warm tavern. What happens? The start presented the intriguing philosophy between rouges as to what is more ethical: killing or rape AND killing?>Jungle of BloodA vampire exiled from his previous nation lands upon a new shore and encounters the local unsophisticated tribe. This had some fun moments like mind-enslaved gorillas using tools to dismantle a ship and build.
>>25314351This looks pretty bad. The way it's mocked up, particularly with the logo and title, makes it almost look like a kid's book.
>>25314939>armor made of literal blades>red glowing eyesThat's the Shrike in a nutshell.
>>25313747I know people shit on the WoT covers, but I love EotW's cover. No doubt it's because of nostalgia, but I love how it perfectly captures the idea of a fantasy adventure. When I think of fantasy, this is one of the first images that pops up in my head.
>>25314939That's... That's how the books describe the Shrike, anon...
>>25314414>>25314532>>25314953Damn, i forgot /lit/ is full of contrarian autists. My mistake, genuinely
>>25314969>If you don't like <my favorite book> you're a contrarian autist!!!Lol. Bye.
>>25314962Yeah... it's fucking edgy shit that only teenage boys think is cool. The covers looks like trash as a result.>>25314969No the scifi community is full fo contrarian autists, /lit/ is just full of retards.
>>25314962This, it's not the artist fault that Simmons had the creativity of an xbox 360 player.
>>25314959Yeah, this cover is cool.
>>25314969>thinks it's just this board
>>25314978No it is the artists fault for catering to that taste. Surely there are better cover concepts that could have been made.
you're not an organ donor, right?
>>25314969Sorry anon, but it's a pretty weak cover. The original is far superior. It's far more evocative and genuinely beautiful.
>>25313747I really like this cover for Suldrun's Garden>picture for antsYes I know but I can't find a larger picture of the full front/back cover
>>25314998Reminds me of The Exigency
>>25314756
>>25314756>>25315131I unironically enjoy Dungeon Crawler Carl as fairly entertaining slop, but holy fuck the fanbase are the most awful, obnoxious little pricks you could ever deal with so I avoid them like the plague. They act like hyperactive children who never got the cringe bullied out of them and it makes me embarrassed to say I like the series without being anonymous.Anyway, book 8 kind of sucked>The race theme was boring and the NPC characters were lame and uninteresting>It felt like an abandoned idea for a previous book>The protagonists have gone from fighting gods and alien warlords to struggling with wacky racer bullshit for some reason>The remaining "dickish" humans in the story were written like retarded strawmen of "bad" people so the author could kill them off to appease the retards in the fanbase who would scream and cry if he didn't>The actual Parade of Horribles was good but it was only the last fifth of the book and the author clearly wanted a ton of filler before it to pad out the wordcountIt's a shame because if you ignore the retard redditors glazing the series the other books are a lot of fun (provided you can get past the cringy first half of the first book)
>>25315423Why do you think everybody and their mother are praising these books to the sun? Honestly, I am confounded. YT and Reddit too. I just dont get it.
>>25315434It's fun to be part of a community and get excited for new releases. I only read One Piece because my friends do too and I like being able to discuss it with them.
>>25315434They're just a fun adventure with comedy and horror elements. The layout of the dungeon allows for floors to have any theme the author wants as it's a fucked up gameshow/death game and the characters are mostly pretty likeable. The actual setting outside of the death game is interesting too, with an ancient galactic empire built on the ruins of an even older empire while horribly misusing its old tech and not understanding it.But unfortunately like all popular things the series also attracts loud and annoying people. The humour also sucks a fair bit, mostly being dick and sex jokes, but the whole package is greater than the sum of its parts and I'm invested.
>>25315443>>25315449I suppose the issue, as always, are the fans recommending the thing every time. It irks me to see this up there with the greats, but I guess its always the middle of the road that bubbles up.
>>25315454Oh, most certainly. It'll never be a genuinely good novel series, it's more like having fast food now and then. I'd still argue DCC is better than those shitty Japanese "light novels" with retardedly long names, but not by a huge amount.
>>25315423I know one thing about this shitty series and I find it highly amusing:>One of the audiobooks had The Critical Drinker for about five minutes as a side character>Reddit still seethes about it to this day, and forced the author to announce he wouldn't have done it if he knew he was an unpersonThat tells me all I need to know. I bet there's long sections screeching about orange man.
>>25315460You make a good point. Western LitRPG is the response to Japanese and Chinese drivel light novels. There is some good stuff on RR, yet not a single one is litrpg. Funny how that works. I particularly enjoy the alien abduction one, with the blue aliens.
>>25315467Oh boy, i can't stand authors/artists who easily give in to public pressure. Remember that thing with Toby Fox changing a little animation in Deltarune because it was making his whiny troon fanbase interpret the scene as rape and it was making them seethe?I have no respect for spineless fags like this.
>>25313747this Japanese edition of Neuromancer.
>>25315559Now this is a scramble suit.
>>25315468No True Scotsman fallacy. They are all LitRPGs, you don't get to personally define what a LitRPG is.
>>25315423I don't interact with the fanbase. I enjoy the books for the most part but I still believe the peak was book 4 when that mudskipper got murdered by Carl.
I must admit, this part of the book so far feels a bit like Harry Potter, not that thats a bad thing yet
>>25315644Coward, Pussy, Bitch.
>>25315630I think the peak was most of Butcher's Masquerade. But the books in general have been going downhill.>Dungeon Crawler CarlThis was okay I guess, but the endless achievements and exposition made me drop it the first time around.>Carl's Doomsday ScenarioIt's basically the first book but a lot better. I liked the first half about the evil circus more than the second about the supernatural Jack the Ripper.>The Dungeon Anarchists CookbookPretty fun all around, I really liked the Iron Tangle and it's where the series starts to really get good. I was surprised he killed off the feminist girlboss crawler here, AND made her a cunt. I was certain she'd be girlbossing it up all the way through.>The Gate of the Feral GodsThis one was a bit of a mess, the "bubble" world theme didn't work for me, even if it was a multi-layered capture the flag match which in theory sounds amazing. Carl doesn't even go to half the zones in the end. Introduces the worst character in the series - Samantha, who has only two kinds of dialogue - Freaky God sex stories and threatening people's mothers.>The Butcher's MasqueradeThe absolute best one. You never know where this is going at any time and the entire thing is just the peak of the series in my opinion>The Eye of the Bedlam BrideNot as good as Masquerade, but oddly comfy with the ghostly Havana setting. The card game sucks, but everything else is good.>This Inevitable RuinHonestly a bit disappointing. This is the Faction Wars game everything built up to, and it's merely okay. Carl and his friends curbstomp like it's some shitty power fantasy anime.>A Parade of HorriblesIt's just meh until the final few chapters where it finally picks up and interesting stuff happens. The races are shit, the NPC opponents are non-entities and Katia's absence is felt pretty hard.I still like the series but I'm preparing for Book 9 sucking hard.
>>25314985I mean, the brazilian covers are a bit better me thinks
>>25315684
>>25315689Finishing here because they didn't publish Rise of Endymion for some reason

>>25315696maybe try sewerslide?
>>25315692It's definitely worth a read but don't expect much sci-fi.
>>25315022Yeah, I like that as well.
>>25315724>don't expect much sci-fiIndeed. It's science fiction not sci-fi.
>>25315684>>25315689>>25315691These are leagues better, worth taking seriously.
>>25315724I mean it's definitely sci-fi, just not hard sci-fi. If you want a hard sci-fi story with political themes like Dune read The Expanse series
Be honest with me lads.Would you fuck the Mother of Toads?
What is this ghoulish creature on the goodreads banner?
>>25315692>A Leftist youtuber who reads a lot of political philosophy convinced me to maybe give Dune an honest try, despite not being fond of leftist youtubers. Why are you even watching this breadtube shit in the first place?

>>25315958I try to be open minded and besides its rare to find people talking about academic stuff in a direct way that suggests they actually read the book without projecting their bias onto it
Just read Pastel City and it was nice. Not great, but nice and simple. Barring Wolfe, what are the lesser known far-future ruins-of-civilization sci fi/fantasy? I absolutely adore this subgenre

Is "The Sword of Truth" series really as bad as I've heard?
https://youtu.be/vcLfHOJu7BUI don't like this guy sometimes because hes too woke and has a representation section at the end of every review, but I also like him a bit and actually found that he was like the one critical guy on sun eater that actually talked about story telling concepts and writing to back up his criticism...but he also thinks red rising is complex and good. So its really about taking the good with the bad.Whether he realizes it or not he also appealed to me here by noting that most people dont actually have any idea what philosophy is actually like. I dont trust people that make claims on its face, but im more inclined to trust people that understand that something conventionally thought to be a certain way, isnt actually that way.So somebody convince me this guy is wrong right now and the Dandelion Dynasty or whatever this shit is called is fake philosophy, or else, this will become my next read, and I'll probably abandon Sun Eater completely because this guy's review honestly strengthened my intuition that it doesnt get better (atleast beyond demon in white)
>>25316861Depends on the person. It's hated and loved.https://www.goodreads.com/group/show_book/1029811-sffg?book_id=43889
>>25316876Dandelion Dynasty is one of my favorite series. For that reason, I don't want you to read it. So whatever you want to believe about it that will stop you from reading it is true. Begone page spammer.
>>25316876Skimmed through and this shit just sounds like Asian Game of Thrones even down to the fact that its also based on Historical China what the fuck
I just want to say that at the end of Lake of the Long Sun, I immediately predicted when the attack started, that it would be revealed that the attacking party thought they were rescuing Silk from arrest. I kinda felt let down when I was proven right. It was too predictable. Very good book overall though. Onto Calde.
I'm 20% of the way through To Green Angel Tower and I need a break. I made it through The Stone of Farewell, but looking back, it was a whole lot of setup with very little happening. I'll come back to finish the series but right now I'd rather read anything else since it just feels like a slog.
>>25317053> it just feels like a slogThat's Tad being Tad. He's a good writer but he writes loooooooong.
>>25316888I agree but pagespammer could never survive Dandelion Dynasty so it doesn't matter
>>25316861The first few books were derivative but fun enough in a mediocre pulp fantasy way. They weren't bad enough to hate. Unfortunately they sold well because the fantasy market at that time was booming and even shitty books were selling. That success only served to inflate his ego and well, the rest is history. The series becomes worse that you would believe possible.
>>25314959I thought people loved those covers, I love all of them.
>>25317263> I thought people loved those coversafaik they do, I can't recall anyone shitting on them. In fact there was a whole shitstorm when they removed them from modern reissues and replaced them with generic trash.
>>25314351>>25314355>>25314361Sorry lad, you can like what you like but those are genuinely unartistic. They are either AI generated or a designer (not an artist) spent the barest minimum of time on slapping them together in a vaguely sci fi theme.
>>25317289>modern reissues and replaced them with generic trashI hate this shit so fucking much. I wanted to pick up the Neuromancer sequels but now there's a new printing and all the covers are just bright solid covers with stylized silhouettes that would completely clash with previous editions.
