>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

I genuinely do not understand the greater point of cultivation chinkshit.
>I NEED TO CULTIVATE TO... do what exactly?
Sniff celestial farts? Become the strongest? To do what?

Why not live a decent, fulfilling, and happy life? If you know you are going to reincarnate, isn't that already a lifehack? Just build intergenerational hidden wealth for yourself.

It seems like all of cultivation shit revolves around grinding some retarded invisible numbers and eating ground tiger penis powders to strengthen your chi or whatever the fuck and then flying around galaxies to kill Ding Dong the Celestial Sword of Faggotry because reasons + stepping stone to higher level that you need to achieve... For some reason.
>>
>>25336590
So the bigger dudes can't kill you on a whim?
>>
>>25336595
It's a pretty consistent feature that Bing Chilling the Random Rice Farmer is beneath their fucking notice and nobody gives a fuck about them.

Again, why start this cultivation shit if it's going to bring the ire of reincarnating eternal celestial trannies on your entire generation forever?
>>
>>25336597
The gods don't bother with ants, but there are always smaller assholes oppressing those under them, and the rice farmer's life is never not miserable. That's just the hierarchy of the bugman world. The only way to be truly free and secure is to become an omnipotent god, and that quest then inevitably leads to people turning into tyrannical assholes that oppress others.

As far as "good reasons" to cultivate I've seen.
>No guarantee of reincarnation with memory preservation, so people cultivate under the theory that reaching high enough will achieve true immortality/godhood under their current personality
>Cultivation for greater wealth/power/glory
>Cultivation under direct threat/command of someone stronger
>Cultivation because it is fun
>Cultivation because you are born in a sect and that's all you know and you would potentially suffer catastrophic social and familial consequences or death if you refused
>Cultivation to escape the control of some higher supernatural force
>Cultivation under the control of some higher supernatural force
>Cultivation to reduce the number of people above you that would treat you as a disposable resource to be consumed or weed to be burned away or an insignificant mote of dust to be stepped on
If you hear someone threw a populated continent at someone else as an attack, resulting in the genocide of everyone there, you are going to see the value in getting strong enough to at least escape your current continent if that ever happens to it or ideally prevent it. Now iterate that idea down to a house and up to a universe. Many cultivation settings have fuck all regard for life and a lot of collateral damage, either deliberate or incidental. The stronger you are, the less fights you have to worry about getting caught up in.

Pic related isn't cultivation, but it illustrates the point.
>>
>>25336623
>CHING CHONG, YOU WILL CULTIVATE OR I WILL KILL YOU AND YOU WILL REINCARNATE AT SOME RANDOM NOBODY RICE FARMER!!
99% of these reasons involve death and death becomes highly meaningless if everyone in your life is a fucking asshole and you are going to be reborn anyway.

I think I should write a karma cultivation thing where the MC instead of being an unhinged chink psychopath rapist is instead a guy who karmamaxxes his entire life.

Will Ching Chong the Cock of Celestial Hellrape continue bullying the lesser beings, or will Bing Chilling the Humble Rice Farmer karmamaxx for his next incarnation, and then completely deprive Ching Chong of all izzat when he completely incidentally becomes more powerful than him, and forgives him?

How do you even reply to a random nobody who suddenly became stronger than you despite all your cultivation copes forgiving you for all the cruel shit you did and effectively turning you into a humiliated sissy without sounding mad?
>>
>>25336630
Fang Yuan would just be chill about it and continue acquiring benefits until he eventually surpasses that guy anyway.

>>25336627
>99% of these reasons involve death and death becomes highly meaningless if everyone in your life is a fucking asshole and you are going to be reborn anyway.
As I said, not all cultivation settings involve guaranteed reincarnation with memory preservation. Also, I'm not defending hellscape cultivation settings where there is no real happiness to be found for anyone that doesn't get off on eating babies after fucking them to death. Those settings have bad writing.

There are cultivation settings where there is happiness to be found in life and ALSO you are at constant risk of being murdered.

Also, I forgot
>Cultivation generally improves your vitality and senses and lengthens your life allowing for you to enjoy life more for longer

But yeah, it's mostly about preventing yourself and those you care about from being murdered as easily. Think of it like military production, research, and development, since that's literally in part what it is.
>>
>>25336590
You generally live longer the higher your cultivation, why the fuck would you not want to reach immortality?

>>
>>25336749
>Correct, you don't need money, you just need basic essentials to get by.
But why isn't nature's bounty enough for you? Go hike into the wilderness of Alaska and build yourself a home and live off the land.

You won't do that because that doesn't rise to the level of your "basic" necessities. I don't begrudge you for that - I feel like having access to medicine, warmth, and electricity are also necessities, but those ARE beyond "basic necessities." The same reason for why you won't settle for just what nature gives you is the reason why those characters cultivate.

50 years ago nobody felt like they needed a cellphone or the internet. Today many people think they do, just as a basic necessity.

I can't because that would require cultivating until I can destroy the American government because they would certainly try to kill me for trying to live a simple life.
>>
>>25336757
>Wukong tries but can't because something something inescapable nature of mind and karma
Wukong can't because the Buddha is one with the multiverse and therefore several times more bullshit than him. Wukong literally races to the edge of the universe and the Buddha had manifested the cosmological pillars holding up reality as the fingers of his hand such that Wukong would still technically be considered within his palm. There was nothing metaphoric about the challenge. Wukong graffitis on one of the pillars and then takes a piss and then when he comes back he finds the graffiti and monkey piss on the Buddha's hand as proof Wukong lost.

Also he wasn't humbled at all. He refused to accept his loss and tried to escape to find proof the Buddha cheated, so the Buddha turned his hand into a mountain and dropped it on him to imprison him.

I almost finished The Last Sovereign, but the pacing at the end is fucking horrendous and there never ended up being much of a strong harem vibe to the series despite the MC living with so many women because the game had to account for you either not having or not having developed different women to different relationship levels.

The game would have drastically have benefitted from being more linear. Also would probably have allowed for less ass pacing.

I read about this person’s game called The Last Sovereign and it was being shilled hard by some author I’d read the works of.
Has someone played it? Is the writing actually good?
>>
>>25337365
yeap. It uses default RPGmaker assets but the writing is top tier. The sex scenes... exist (in the sort of boring fem vanilla romance) but the politics and economiy and scope are a good ride.

>>
>>25337384
It's like 80+ hours and fairly well-written. I wouldn't call it slop. RPGmaker is just an engine like any other.

I get that RPGmaker games tend to have a similar look and feel, but you really shouldn't just assume they're all bad just cause they all look like they were made in 1994 and some people churn out 50 minute low effort cash grabs with it.

So, the appeal of WNS is just quantity and not quality? Did I get that right?
>>
>>25337454
It's several factors; they're easy to read (written by complete amateurs), delayed gratification (posting schedule), community engagement, trope-chasing, and accessibility.
>>
>>25337454
Most of them is, yes. 99% WNs will be pure unedited slop straight from the sewage pipe. You might as well tune in to an indian talkshow if you want an instant audiobook version of most WNs.

Other than that, WNs also tend to be longer and rawer. Some may deem this a positive, some will find it a negative.

Not all WNs are bad but holy fuck is the floor fucking low.

I hope there is an inevitable "Tian rapes and pillages the Hongs" arc and the author doesn't fuck it up. There seems to be some ~knowledge~ of who he is or may be but the plot armor must be protecting him from execution.

unrelated but why does RR even allow AI generated stories?
>>
>>25337575
They're going to get posted anyway. Might as well let some of them come clean and self-tag.
While there is still disdain for it, people would have more goodwill towards someone who is honest about it compared to someone trying to pass it off as non-ai and then gets caught.
>>
what’s the point of publishing an ai generated story? who are the people reading it? doesn’t really make any sense, theoretically anybody could generate one if they wanted, so why bother searching or reading one on RR if you could just generate one to your exact preference.
>>
>>25337607
Same reason people put out AI generated music and videos.

Retards don't care. They see things as "content" to "consume." It's all just brain food to chew up and excrete later. They'll listen to audiobook versions of AI generated stories using AI voiceovers while working their wagie jobs and act like they've been reading because of it. They won't remember a lick of prose so they won't care.

>>25337632
Eh. It simultaneously sucks and is kind of useful. Artisanal markets are usually nicher but when they work out they pay well. We saw it with furniture and the like, the same is inevitably going to be the case for creative endeavors. I think most people have some sort of direct experience with an older family member's furniture that seems nigh immortal and high-quality because it was made either before mass production or during the first boom of artisanal furniture-making post-mass-production.

It's gonna likely be the same for storytelling.

Someone on Romance For Men made and posted this HMOFA Master List here - https://www.reddit.com/r/Romance_for_men/comments/1sx37wz/hmofa_masterlist/
though I think it contains scalies as well.
I'm more into monster girls myself but I'm somewhat open to this stuff and can give a few specific suggestions -
How about those spooky spindly shadowy sinister senoritas? (picrel) She's technically more like a mystery box cryptid but its HMOFA in my book.
There's also Somatic Dreams stuff ie. The Scars Remain series, he's probably the best writer in genre.
Snek Guy is more known for this monster girls but has some that would qualify. My favorite is Goetic Justice and Longhunter. Technically anything in his Pinwheel series featuring Borealans are basically alien catgirls.
Jan Stryvant has some mixed harems with that has Anthers in them ie. Valens Legacy and Dan's Inferno but obviously they aren't all anthrogirls.
There's also Wilderness Hearts and for now that's all I can remember.

Tian actually comes across as a fairy in the old style. It's rare for cultivation where half the time it's just weird guanxi stuff. He even lampshades it with that sword cultivator when they leave the mountain after breaking through, it's great. It doesn't all have to be daoism but I wish there was stuff like Sky Pride. It's pretty unique. Even better, while it started fine the prose has improved over time as well as having Tian's internal monologue and pov match his state of personal development.

The workings of it are pretty opaque, but it still is the system that China runs on. Trust and obligation. Which is a riot because, you know, fucking China, a land that is a jar full of poison centipedes fighting for who can be the worst possible person. The workings of the CCP are mostly opaque but you can see hints of it at the lower level with pay structure and how their more unsustainable budget/taxation practices work. I wonder if there's a book on the topic at higher levels somewhere.

Not that the west doesn't have its own patronage cultures but guanxi is genuinely alien. You can sort of infer and see how they came to parts of the japanese system of face, and izzat is just schoolyard rules blown up to a civilisation level. Guanxi, beyond a certain point, seems to be something you have to be a bugman to understand.

In theory present tense is better for the action oriented nature of litrpg and progression fantasy. In reality you will forget while writing and naturally fall back into past tense anyway so don't bother.
Almost always third person. First only works if your protagonist is either the unreliable narrator trope or has a strong voice/personality. You're going to get tired of writing them over many chapters.
Tags should be behind but you should try not to use them too much.

They're you being angry enough that you birth a negative metaphysical force that lives in your psyche and can't manifest in the world unless something strange happens. It eats what made it. Depending on the novel they may eat cultivation too or be able to turn a breakthrough into freedom, but that's usually not a thing. Sort of like gu when it happens.

They originate from the idea of qi deviation, I think, which was an actual thing the ancient bugmen believed regarding internal energy/qigong practices.
>>
why are y'all so stingy with your recommendations
>>
>>25338506
Read sky pride, cultivation nerd, virtuous sons. Reverend insanity is boring, lord of the mysteries is dull, forge of destiny was a bad quest and became a bad story. >>
>>25338506
Cause I'm reading 500 chapter long smut novels and you can only fap so much in a day. I'd give up more recommendations if I had em.

Read The Campus Forum Administrator. Looks non-smutty. Then report back if it's any good for me.
>>
>>25338427
Third person past tense. I like to use a "narrator attached to the character" wherein the narration is tinged by the character's mental state. So if a character encounters someone they hate, that will affect the narration. I do this because writing inner-monologue makes me cringe.

Dialogue tags are fine wherever you put them. You also forgot the third option, in the middle.

"You see, the reason the Lord's gendarmerie go after you and not the actual criminals," said the old man, a mischievous smirk creeping onto his face, "is that the criminals fight back. It's dangerous for the gendarmerie to go after actual crime. So either keep your head down, or make yourself even more dangerous to target."
>>
>>25338464
It's like anxiety or stress (or other strong emotions or desires) that make it hard to focus on cultivation or towards achieving ones goals.
>>
>>25338464
It depends on the novel/setting.
But it's usually your own mental issues impeding cultivation. Like archers irl get this fucked up flinch thing where they can't aim properly.

With that said, what do I read next? I’ve been putting LOTM volume 3 off for a while but I don’t think I should start with it again because I think I’m at my limit for stilted translated prose after so many chapters of RI slop.
Something western that’s good and has a good length? Preferably something that’s on Amazon too so I can grab an ePub and read on my kindle.
What I’ve read and liked, in no specific order:
Mother of Learning, the Years of Apocalypse, The Elf Who Would Become A Dragon, A Practical Guide to Sorcery (and Evil), Worm, The Perfect Run
I also liked these from the eastern ones I’ve read: LOTM, RTOC, ReZero
Maybe something which has a good romance subplot? I know that’s a big ask.

>>

>but you can see hints of it at the lower level with pay structure and how their more unsustainable budget/taxation practices work
They're not that unsustainable. If a western country managed to cut healthcare and pension spending in half that would have a ludicrous amount of money available. Infrastructure spending in the West is like 5% of government spending. We could legitimately build amazing infrastructure just by skimming some of the money we spend on social services, but we don't. We let our infrastructure languish instead. China is taking advantage of the fact that their population used to be poor, so they're not as demanding for social services (yet). They can take a lot of that money and just pump it into building out stuff.

I wish we got some of this stuff in fantasy novels, but the only politics we ever see are "capitalism bad", "this fantasy world is totally LGBT friendly", and "slavery bad, but for some reason we still have institutionalized slavery."
>>
>>25338696
Clara Casewell is an ambitious up-and-coming associate at an international corporate law firm. Yet underneath her serious lawyerly persona lies a woman with a passion for all sorts of villainess stories. It doesn’t matter how trashy or badly written they are: as long as it’s got a haughty girl and a brooding duke, Clara will devour it like popcorn!

After a heated year at the firm, Clara ekes out a promotion to Senior Counsel over her rival, the cocky Warren Righton. But on her way to celebrate, a bout of turbulence sends her plane spiraling down. When Clara wakes up, she’s wearing a… maid’s uniform? She finds herself in a world of nobles and magic, not social media and corporate grind.

And there’s one more problem: Clara’s master is the notorious villainess Iris von Rhenia, and Iris and Clara are about to be put on trial for poisoning the heroine. A trial based on truth magic, where the accused get no defense. Join Clara as she learns the ins-and-outs of the unfair, convoluted, and often fantastical courts of the Holy Kingdom of Arcadia, meeting a colorful cast of characters including the heir to the Duke of the North™—but why does he look eerily like her annoying rival Warren?!

Surely fantasy law can’t be harder than modern cross-border taxation, right?

WNs are about getting a different story. If you've read enough traditionally published novels they stop being interesting because they rehash the same stuff over and over again. WNs can provide you with fresh content because the authors are amateurs - they don't know all the "rules" of writing, so they do unexpected things - and WNs are so much longer than traditionally published stories that many more differences emerge in the stories leading to different outcomes.
>>
>>25337607
There are varying degrees of AI use when crafting a story:
1. You could use AI purely to spell check. Everyone that's not retarded should do this.
2. You could use AI to reword certain passages that you don't know how to write.
3. You could write the story yourself, but since you suck so much at writing, you let the AI reword everything. All the ideas of the story are yours, but all the words stating those ideas come from the AI.
4. Finally, you could let the AI generate the ideas for you. I haven't actually seen any story that I can tell would fall into this category. I think most stories that are obviously AI are #3 because they're too coherent for AI.

I guess it’s time to try Sky Pride again. I think I’d dropped it initially when I wasn’t well versed with cultivation stories, but I remember that the prose was good for RR. And it has 6 volumes out which is great.
>>
I've found a pattern among "established" RR authors releasing a new fiction: they treat their new story as if they were releasing for their main WN. Basically, they release the series in severe need of an editing pass or three, the first chapter is completely unpolished, and there isn't even a good hook a few chapters in. It's almost like they've completely given up and rely only on their fanbase to rocket up. Which--fair enough, it works most of the time, but I bet they could get a better response if they put slightly more effort into it.
>>
>>25338726
Why see any effort when you don't have to?

>They're not that unsustainable
Half the reason the construction industry bubble is as problematic as it is in China is because those low level governments cannot fund themselves without state corporations selling land rezoning to developers, with internal kpi for ccp officials also being based on margins of economy/turnover and budget balance. It's baked in unsustainable, with a hard limit on vision because most of the officials responsible for it are shuffled off to other things quickly as long as they're not complete tards

>drop a chapter regardless
I guess I'll never make money because I'm above grifting.
>>
>>25338888
I agree with the second statement but money has nothing to do with it, shitty stories make a lot of money all the time
>>
>>25338899

>>
>>25338899
He's able to make six digits by writing dogshit. Most of us aren't doing that. It's why I try not to disparage the successful writers, they might be incompetent and stupid for the most part but they clearly know how to keep a gravy train going.
>>
>>25338915
>Most of us aren't doing that
LMAO! the writers of /wng/ are butthurt because someone else makes more money.
post your novel.
>>
>>25338896
nah, fuck grifters, but you should definitely network and make friends and post all your works on all the places you can and ask for feedback and constantly improve

being an artist is hard because you need to be good at making art AND be a good businessman

or you should at least know someone who is good at making money and ask them for help

I see crappy artists make money all the time because they are good at business
>>
>>25338917
How am I butthurt? I'm not the one calling the guy making way more money than me retarded lmao.

I don't write and I still physically cringe every single time I see the word archmage while scrolling rising stars every now and then for something interesting to read.

Though at least aside for patient zero I don't think any of them have been actually successful, but the sheer amount of ones with middling success makes me disappointed in humanity a little bit more.
>>
>>25338941
don't worry anon, mine will be the last one

what do you guys think about this cover?

should I go with hot girl or a based pick of the environment?
>>
>>25338955
too noisy
>>
>be a good businessman
Should I use a separate pen name than the one I use for fanfics?
Actually is brand dilution in general something to worry bout if you're not selling ebook on Amazon? I know over there it's bad to mix genres under one pen name because of the "also bought" algorithm but does it matter that much on RR? The author of Void Princess only writes human male+monstrous female but then there's others who write all kinds of different stuff.
>>
>>25338697
You'd think we would see "capitalism good" in fantasy since the author could remove the Jewish variable.
>>
>>25338958
as someone who did graphic design brand identity and marketing are one of the most important aspects of any business.

it is as important as the product itself.

you can have the best product, but without marketing no one will ever see your product. so make sure your marketing is as good as your product.
>>
>>25338697
if you read eminence in shadow, it has a pretty positive view of capitalism, shadow's girls create an entire corporation that takes over the world basically, they even have a whole money creation arc
>>
>just got the chance to read this week's Pale Lights
Holy kino. Why can't this be the standard for WNs instead of slop?
>>
>>25338966
There is a subset of Japenese comfyslop that basically is that. Problem is it often comes with the MC having cheat powers to just bullshit out stuff to sell instead of actually setting up supply chains and production lines or even just doing regional merchant trade better than the locals by using their modern knowledge.
>>
>>25338979
I read like 30 chaps of Pale Lights and couldn't continue, slow and boring
Reminded me of trad pub. Exactly what I escaped from for actually fun stories

>Average 8000 words per chapter, bi-weekly
>So about 570 words a day
There's probably room for more like this but it will never be the standard because of the slow paced releases.
>>
>>25338986
>slow
surely it should be slow after 30 chatpeters
>>
>>25339022
it was always slow

Can we have covers of books anons actually read for the OP? Or at least stuff you can find on RR with an English cover.

I'm saying the OP image should be from web novels that are actually related to the thread not some random stories that nobody ever talks about.
>>
>>25339628
Retard
>>
>>25339628
if you want to choose the OP image then make the OP next time. trying to organize some sort of approved list of images is gay as hell
thing is that the thread is usually most active during third world hours and gets to post limit at that time
>>
>>25339642
Nobody has ever talked about "Top Tier Providence" in this thread even during thirdie hours.
If the thirdies want to put Regressors Tale or Shadow Slave in the OP I don't mind because at least those are stories that actually have something to do with the general.
>>
>>25339649
if you insist on only ever having covers of stories that are talked about then we'll run out of covers in a week
this is an autistic hill to die on and doesn't matter at all
it'd be nice if it weren't all chinkslop but I'm pretty sure one slav or sea gook is doing it either to annoy or as some weird form of self expression
there's nothing that can be done about it if (you) don't take initiative on making the OP
>>

I remember being so smug when I realised my prediction that they'd tunnel out via Panaxeth's prison was correct. The story hits all my personal buttons. And it being created by a Czechoslovakian accountant who learned English through Naruto fanfiction is funny. I wish we knew more about the world. For all people recommend the years of apocalypse it's just not the same.

Ten Thousand Tragedies isn't bad though I am surprised the MC doesn't use his rewind more often.
>>
Are there any other sites like QuestionableQuesting and ScribbleHub with a primary male audience that allows smut?
>>
>>25339276
IIRC, the story has one genderfluid (uses shapechanging magic to switch physical sex on a daily basis; minor, stops showing up early on), one nonbinary (sex unspecified; major, shows up very late; a looper who was put into a loop-spanning coma by an evil looper, but gets woken up by one of Mirian's ally loopers), and zero trannies.
t. read the whole thing
