As someone who has been to state prison and kept the company of many killers, including professionals, I can't really get on board with how McCarthy likes to depict them. The rare ones that are philosophical are not talkative unless you push them to open up, and they tend to be extremely cynical and regard most human beings as timid rabbits, far too boring to bother toying with unless it is about overtly threatening or kicking around in contempt. But most of them are just jolly soldier types and think of themselves that way, low on intelligence but frequently high on craftiness and loyalty
