After years of frying my dopamine receptors with social media what are some good books to get started with reading again, It should be light enough reading for me to get back into it but at the same time be intellectually and spiritually stimulating

>>25413076You have to figure out your own taste and the only way to do is to try different thingsdon't force yourself to read literary fiction if you're a sci-fi nerd at heart, be true to yourself
>>25413076Depends on what you like, I’d recommend starting with novellas or short stories
>>25413076Do not start with books that are easy. It will just be boring and you will drop it. You should do the exact opposite and start with something “difficult.” Try the Canterbury Tales in middle english.
>>25413140Horrible, pseud take for insecure poseurs. If someone is starting to read, telling them to try books in a language they might barely understand is just going to kill their interest. Obviously he should move onto books like this in pretty short order but as a starting point it’s awful. The only people for whom this works are pseudointellectual autists who can force themselves through by their intense narcissism as they pretend to “get” books that they don’t have the verbal reasoning or the wider literary context for yet.Do not do this, OP.
>>25413140>Try the Canterbury Tales in middle english. This is like the perfect way to get a reader to hate reading. You're throwing a baby chick like a baseball up against a brick wall here man
>>25413076>dopamine receptors with social mediathe more people believe in this and repeat it, the less i believe in it
>>25413139To add onto this, read books about something you’re interested in, don’t start by getting many books at once. After you’re reading regularly and for extended periods, try something that’s harder and longer, it will be more rewarding but you probably need to build up to it
Read the works of Byung Chul Han. Particularly The Burnout Society, Psychopolitics and The Transparency Society. Taoism and stoicism are good, too. For the latter avoid any of the modern hustle culture slop interpretations. Remember at its core it's about virtue and cosmopolitanism, not about enduring your way through The Grind. Also, stop using social media, remember that the first step towards curing brainrot is to stop consuming the things that cause it. Avoid multitasking and context switching as well since they just fragment your attention span. Meditating for five minutes is also a good way to cool down sometimes.
>>25413240Byung is a bad read imo and arguably counterproductive to someone who wants to fix their live rather than wallow in it
>>25413163>read books about something you’re interested inthis is what you want to start with OP. fixing your attention span by reading uninteresting/boring books is incredibly difficult
>>25413249He diagnoses a lot of the problems with the modern zeitgeist, and the books are short and fragmented enough that they're easy to get into. He might get confused at some of the philosophical or literary references, but he can always use Google or ChatGPT/Gemini for help.
>>25413263Fair, but the issue I'm referring to is that he frames modern capitalist society as the colonization of free time, which is an arguable premise but a fair one. But he doesn't provide any meaningful answer to this, instead leaving it at that. Anon is already aware that his free time is pumped and dumped by social media, does he really need to know it in a post modern capitalist critique lens in order to fix his attention span?
>>25413076Gravity Rainbow, a super easy book long enough to enjoy for at least a full week, you'll love the story it's about war and rockets and there's some sex inside
>>25413076
>>25413076The Old Man and the Sea
>>25413556Good first choice, was the very first book I read when I was fixing my attention span and reading more, nearly a decade since now

>>25413076fightclub is what you want. it's fun.
>>25413076Unironically.
>>25413076Imho, a textbook or some kind of workbook would be best. It would be more engaging and stimulating to your brain to answer questions and solve problems.Perhaps something in the format of questions and answers like Halmos’ Linear Algebra Problem Book or Friedman’s The Little Schemer.
If you’re still here OP I would recommend starting with entertaining fiction if your brain is actually cooked. Stuff like asoiaf or the prince of nothing series would be good. They are both easy reads and entertaining but long so you can try to get in the habit of reading without letting your mind drift. If your mind does drift don’t get upset, just chill and have fun. All of the tryhard litbro novels are for posers anyways. Just read what sounds enjoyable to you and don’t make it your identity.
>>25413240He isn't reading for a philosophy degree.
The real trick to get back into reading is you have to find a way to socialize through it. Otherwise, social media will continue to grip you. That's its big appeal is that you're always connected to other people
>>25413076Cat in the hat
>>25414335It's a great book but not a first book for a reader thing though
this book is fascinating, and very easy to read. it follows the diary entries of a literal retard who gradually becomes smarter.
