people spend an incredible amount of time pretending that reading is a linear progression where you begin with one shelf and eventually graduate to another as though novels were gym equipment with clearly labeled difficulty tiers and i never really understood why that fantasy became so popular because the actual experience of reading feels almost completely random one month youll spend three hundred pages fascinated by a writer youve never heard mentioned anywhere and the next youll bounce off one of the supposedly indispensable masterpieces after fifty pages without either experience telling you very much about yourself except that taste seems to fluctuate far more than people are comfortable admitting and maybe thats why discussions about books become so performative because certainty is easier to display than curiosity nobody wants to say they changed their mind halfway through or that they admired something without enjoying it or that they enjoyed something without believing it was particularly profound because all those postions sound unstable and instability doesnt travel well across the internet where every opinion slowly calcifies into identity until even minor preferences start looking like ideological commitments then somebody asks for recommendations and the replies arrive with almost ritualistic predictability because everyone is unconsciously reinforcing the same map that everyone else inherited before them and after enough repetition the map starts replacing the territory entirely where books become coordinates rather than experiences and authors become shorthand for personality types instead of people who wrote sentences at particular moments for particular reasons and i dont even think this happens maliciously i think its just what discussion naturally drifts toward after enough cycles because its much easier to exchange reputations than impressions reputations compress neatly into lists while impressions resist compression they depend on mood timing expectation memory translation the chair you happened to be sitting in whether it was raining outside whether you were distracted halfway through a chapter whether you accidentally read the introduction first whether somebody spent five years insisting the book would permanently alter your understanding of existence before you ever touched it and all those tiny contingencies disappear once the conversation becomes public because nobody wants to preface every recommendation with a catalogue of circumstances so everything gets flattened into declarations about greatness and influence and necessity even though the private experience that produced those declarations was almost certainly messier than the polished version eventually posted online and maybe thats unavoidable because discussion always simplifies experience but sometimes i wonder how many books acquire reputations that slowly become impossible for the text itself to satisfy simply because decades of readers kept stacking stuff

Teaching is difficult. Because all you can do is show them or tell your student one thing at a time. But in order to execute a proper skill you need a complex balanced understanding of the local domain of reality over which the skill grants mastery. The pre-requisite of the skill is understanding. Almost a mechanical understanding. If you teach someone well there is a moment when all of the atomized floating ideas that you have told them coalesce into a functioning model. An epiphany moment. I remember my mother teaching me how to read. The first words I could read were "pee" and "poop". And when the concepts of letters and sounds as representations of concepts and objects came together and I understood how to make it work I felt a wave of heat and cold ripple across my skin and prickle through my mind.

i used to have this impression tat the internet was boundless and there must be and endless supply of forums discussing all topics out there,b ut it really feels like the internet is getting smaller and smaller now for example there is pretty much nowhere that i can find to actually discuss literature. /lit/ is dogshit for actually reading a book and posting about it looking for discussion, reddit is similarly dogshit. on wither of these sites you can make a post about a book, what you thought of it, things that stood out to you, good or bad,and try to start a discussion, and you will be lucky to get a post or two replying, and luckier still if any of those commentors have anything to say. goodreads needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, and the app is even worse than the desktop site, and i gather that most of its users are using the appim at the point where im looking for discussion on you tube and even that is surprisingly lacking. sometimes i read a relatively famous classic and look on outube and theres like 10 videos on it in the entire site and half of them are just ai summaries why is the world to gay when it comes to books and reading
