My mom is such a modern woman. Rarely cooks, rarely cleans the house, works several jobs. Cares about left-wing politics, liberal yada yada attitude towards everything in life, unable to live in an orderly manner.
My father is the manly version of her, except that to all his leftist attitudes he has preserved a tiny little bit of backbone wich has saved him from fully giving into full degeneracy. In fact he is the kind of guy to sue his neighbour simply because he didn't like his face, or going full barbarian inside a work environment and scaring the crap out of both co-workers and work-givers before calling it the final quits, simply out of protest. I would admire him more if he had achieved a single thing in his life. In reality he didn't even earn above until two years before going into rent, wich is kind of odd for a first-world country.

Do they at least make good money?
>>
Bank account is showing thousands transferred to my mom’s checking. Call her and ask if she made a mistake and I find out it is not a mistake. I dig deeper and find that she has a negative balance and only 20k in her 401k at 63 all while going on trips to Europe and no job prospects or skills to get a job. The realization that I have more saved at 24 than she does, and with a low paying job, is a feeling I never wish I had to feel. Maybe I am being just a baby though, I know people who have it much worse
>>
>>25441379
>In fact he is the kind of guy to sue his neighbour simply because he didn't like his face
That's a liberal thing, most conservatives make connections and relationships and it becomes a tit-for-tat thing that sometimes spirals into crazy neighbor disputes.
>t. lives next to a son of a US Admiral
>r going full barbarian inside a work environment and scaring the crap out of both co-workers and work-givers before calling it the final quits, simply out of protest.
Again, you'd be surprised who is conservative in your office environment because they are smart enough to keep their mouths shut for self-preservation reasons.
Yet the liberals have the balls to say that they live under a dictatorship.
>>
>>25441395
being a conservative in a modern day work enviroment is no different than being a jew during world war 2, just with slightly lower stakes. The irony is that Jews helped to foster this kind of environment.
>>
>>25441395
>Yet the liberals have the balls to say that they live under a dictatorship.
Anon, I'm not unsympathetic, but everyone making fun of you for saying "Shakespeare sucks!" or "Vaccines cause autism!" isn't remotely like a dictatorship. And even if it is, well, that's just society naturally filtering out braindead ideas. Yes, sometimes they catch good ideas, but that's how it goes.

>>
>>25441388
Nah they don't make good money. My dad barely earned above minimum wage until a couple years before he went into rent, and my mom works several jobs but they're all low-wage, nothing stable. They had an inheritance sitting in a bank account wich they just let dwindle on trips and restaurants while we lived in a crammed appartment in a poor neighbourhood. The money was there but it never really came in, just went out. They should have taken welfare instead of making me take out that student loan, at least that would have been honest.

>>25441393
I know that feeling. When I found out my parents had a lump sum inheritance just sitting there while they made me take out a student loan wich they claimed for themselves, it felt like I was the only adult in the house. My mom blew money on lavish trips and then acted like we were on the verge of bankrupcy. At least your mom has a 401k, mine never even had a career, just minimum wage jobs. You're not being a baby, it's just the objective reality of having irresponsible parents. It's a special kind of betrayal when you realize they've been lying about money the whole time. You end up having to be the one with sense.
>>
>>25441393
>women are bad at money and just completely destroy their credit score before getting married and making it someone else's problem was a surprise to me
You're Mom isn't an anomaly, she is the rule, another reason why no one wants to get married anymore.
>>
>>25441393
Was that an automatic thing because she was negative or she outright deliberately just took the money?
>>
>>25441393
This is going to be hard to hear, but she is going to be a millstone around your neck that will eventually sink you. Why would you trust a woman who spends so frivolously? Even if its your own Mother? Our financial system is designed to put people like your Mom and you into slaver's debt for the rest of your life, if you care about your future at all I would call to dispute the transfer, take her off the Bank Account, and cut her out of your life.
You're future shouldn't be condemned just because she is related to you.

>Don't vaccine your kids!
>Well that's dumb and could get people killed but hey, let bygone be bygones.

Really? And yet I'm sure you types would be happy if the shoe were on the other foot and things like miscegenation and untraditional family values were derided and filtered out too.

>>25441431
The alternative isn’t no reaction—it’s a meaningful distinction between social shunning and institutional enforcement. You’re collapsing “people think you’re an idiot” with “you get fired, deplatformed, or legally harassed.” Those aren’t the same thing, and pretending they are is either dumb or dishonest. Filtering isn’t neutral; the people who decide which ideas are “putatively idiotic” already have power. You’d be singing a different tune if the filter decided miscegenation and untraditional family values were the idiotic ones—and you’d notice the difference real quick when it wasn’t just jokes but your livelihood on the line.
>>
>>25441430
CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL!!!!
ur sperging out, relax
>>
>>25441435
You're not wrong about the institutional piece, but you're missing why the filter existed in the first place. It wasn't arbitrary power—it was the organic immune response of a people who understood on some level that miscegenation leads to the dissolution of both bloodlines. That "untraditional family value" wasn't just some Puritan hang-up; it was the recognition that a nation can't survive if it doesn't reproduce itself. The tragedy isn't that the filter is applied, it's that it's now been captured by those who want to pathologize the instinct for self-preservation. Not saying we need to bring back the lynch mobs, but a society that can't even express a preference for its own continuity is already dead.
>>
>>25441433
>>25441435
I'm not saying it's a good thing, I'm saying it is what it is. The only way to stop it would be to institute mandatory contracts for all employment like they have in Europe so you cannot fire people for whatever, disagreeable opinions and bad PR included, but I'm sure many of you free market, conservative types would froth at the mouth at such an idea too. Anyway I'm going to lay back down. Have a good one.
>>
>>25441431
>>Well that's dumb and could get people killed but hey, let bygone be bygones.
That's exactly the problem, you don't respect people's rights or people's choices, you want to strip people of their rights and enforce your ideals onto people, which is the most bigoted and imperialistic thing ever.
Also, its why all liberal run cities become shitholes, because the people who choose to become criminals aren't punished for their choices but people choosing not to vaccinate their children go to jail because God forbid someone have a different religious or moral system than you do.

Ooooh i have an idea for a new sport. It's the National Rape League. It's two naked men who take turns being the Rapist and the Raped. You have some set amount of time for the two "rounds". Full penetrations are worth 5 points while each thrust is an additional 2. The Raped for that round must run or wrestle away the Rapist until the 10 minutes are up and then you switch sides. If it is tied at the end of two rounds. There will be a sudden death where both men will be the Rapists. First penetration wins.

There will be a day, a day where I will have finally lost everyone, with not a soul connected by blood with me alive on this Earth. A day I will spend alone; with no one to call, and where no calls will be answered. A day, where all the times I have wronged someone close to me will be crashing down on me at once. Where I'll be remembering every single time I said to myself "I don't want to meet them today, there's always a next time).
And just like how I know that day will come, I know that, on that day, I'll be at my grandparents' apartment, watching Alien vs. Predator. That, I know for sure. Just like I knew that my last interaction with my father was going to be a letter, informing me of his death, written by a lawyer.

There's a Buddhist saying that you're never truly alone when you are with yourself, which is kind of both a truism and a joke in the religion, because in Buddhism your body and your soul are seen as separate but Buddhism is the only religion where they constantly reinforce that in speech:
>You don't hurt, your body hurts
>You don't feel sad, your soul feels sad
So while it is kinda employed by Buddhist Monks as a joke: "I'm not alone, I'm with myself" it is also technically true so when you feel lonely and no one is around there's really only two options you can do:
>Do something for someone aka be of service
>Care for yourself like you would care for someone else
So spend some money on yourself, take the day to just do nothing, maybe go get take out, I don't know. But you'll feel a little bit better pampering yourself if you don't want to help someone out with something.

Don't have enough for music gear etc. clothes I don't buy anymore it's a waste of money, I could get takeout but I'm on a diet and I started to dislike ordered food cause it's all slop. I guess I'll get some books or maybe even save the money so that I have more for my trip to the country

Get yourself a small ice cream or milkshake, or sushi or something, if you look around long enough you'll find something you want.
Doesn't have to be entertainment either, is there anything that is kinda annoying or incontinent you could spend money on to make your day smoother? A lot of the purchases I make for myself aren't even enteratinment related but they are more "flow/efficiency/organizational" things that make my day so much easier:
>misplaced wallet: bought a bowl to put my wallet in next to my bedroom door
>unorganized computer desk draw: bought stackable draw organizers and organized that
>disorganized room or desk: bought a bunch of banker's boxes and put it all away to sort through a box a week
It doesn't have to really be something you want but something that maybe makes your life easier or solves a small annoying problem you have in the morning when you are rushing from work. Sometimes not really knowing what you want to buy yourself is a great opportunity to buy something that will just make your life a little bit less frustrating.
>>25442065
If you're having trouble finishing books have you tried reading a poem book by Robert Frost? People seem to either love or hate books that are poem collections but they are nice to just pick up, read a poem a day, put it down and go back to whatever you were doing.
As for Faulkner I couldn't really recommend any, I haven't read him. I have read the 4 Agreements recently, its a very short book and ifs basically filled with very common sense and fundamental advice that people tend to forget or not think about too often, its a nice reminder but he does have a story about a Buddhist monk where he claims Buddhist meditation and monks "strive to be happy all the time" which isn't true, in Buddhism and other related religions you strive to be contented. Happiness to Buddhism is just as addictive and destructive of an emotion as anger or sadness is. But its short so if you're struggling to finish books and you want to just pick up something that is short, easy to read, and is kinda in the Pop Culture of Reading Zeitgeist then I'd recommend that. Apparently Alcoholics Anonymous use the book as mandatory reading these days.
Another one is How to Connect by Thich Nhat Hanh, its another self-help type book but it actually has way less pages than The 4 Agreements and its again, a very easy and quick read. It's not really in the Zeitgeist but finding small books, even children's books, to just read through in 10 to 30 minutes can sometimes remind you why we read and how fun it can be so you can go back and tackle some of the bigger books.

A tall, pale woman, dressed in a short, black leather skirt stands impatiently in the doorway. She wears a white blouse, equally too small, and a novelty leather hat, with saturated, slightly smudged makeup hiding a tired visage. Stray rays from neon pink strobe lights enter the room from around her.
"Can't you see i'm busy?!" growls a portly man from inside a dingy office, dressed in a pressed beige suit, in an irritated but controlled tone.
"Sir, your guest is here to see you" replies the woman, politely.
"Ahh yes, Mr S... something or other, bring him straight in, darling."
A thinner, friendlier looking man enters, looking noticeable out of place. He wears blue overalls and a bright red cap. His fingernails are dirty and shoes well-worn.
"Welcome! Please excuse... you know, all of this. Come in and have a seat." The stout man greets him warmly.
The young woman interjects "Sir, what am I to do about the situation upstairs? That customer is insistent he wants-"
"Please, darling, not here, leave us be. I'll attend to it later." replies the man.
"He won't let it go, Chu-"
"That's enough. Tell him i'm busy and we can't accommodate him right now. Call security if you must."
The woman closes the door and leaves with a tired sigh.
The thin man takes a seat in a leather bound chair, declining the whiskey his host gestures towards.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, I was intrigued by your proposal to say the least." The stout man takes a sip of his cold glass of bourbon.
"Well I know the land here well, mister. It's fertile, soil pH is around 7 or 8. Not too far out of town either." He replies in a jovial tone.
"I don't know anything about that, but you might be the first fella to buy a whorehouse and turn it into a farming supply store. You know i'd normally squeeze some more cash out of ya, but I like what you're doing here. I'd say your offer's more than reasonable."
"So you accept?"
"Sure. Let's do it. I feel good about this. Mr..."
"Sneed. The name's Sneed."

>Budhism
Yeah I had my buddhist phase when i was 20 a while back, at this point it all sounds like mumbo jumbo to me and I dont care to examine it further. I listened to a bunch of Alan Watts then and even read his books and Tao te Ching. I also meditated. I guess it helps with anxiety to some but at the end of the day i dont think it gives answers at all. Then I had a christian phase which made me mentally ill. I dont think christianity or even budhism is compatible with fulfilling normal happy rational life. It is compatible if you dont take it too seriously and just pick up some layman spiritual maxims but if you dig deeper its just crazy irrational shit.
I like poetry though, ill look into it.

Yeah I still consider myself Christian too. But I will never ever believe blindly whatever any christian book says, even if its reputable. Also there's lots of shady stuff going on in Vatican, especially with their secret societies.

I hate this city I moved to across the river from my old one. One of the biggest reasons is in my old city, public transportation is robust and popular. In this one, not as much, so the busses not running as often aside, what really bugs me is I feel like a loser waiting at a bus stop here because it's not as socially accepted. I never feel that way in the other city. Fortunately, I still look youngish for my age, so it's not too bad, I look like I'm in college or fresh out so it's not too bad, but if I'm still living in this city in a year, I'll definitely become "ew look at that man waiting for the bus," it's fuckin' lame. Hopefully I get a chance to move back to the other city.

There is a suspicious small piece of pink and purple polka-dotted luggage currently resting by the fellowship hall door to my church this morning. The authorities have been called. I just wanted you to all know just in case I get blowed up, that you're all of you the most insufferable, narcissistic up-you-own-ass, psuedointellectual fartsniffing performative losers I've ever had the misfortune of interacting with. You all think you're so deep and smart because you (supposedly) read X philosophical treatsie but in reality you're just a bunch of retarded losers that can't even figure out how to talk to a woman without shitting your pants and muttering obscenities under your autistic breath.

If I had a giant red button that said "PRESS TO KILL ALL 4CHANNERS AND REDDITORS" I wouldn't think twice or hesitate to push it. Fuck (You) all. You are the lowest tier of molecular scum on the bottom of the barrel of the cosmos and my life is all the poorer for ever having had to interact with (You). Die out. (You) will never breed. (You) will never finish writing that book. She WILL reject (You) and may your TBR pile grow forever larger.

So far, about 50 bucks. I have a decent personal library composed of used books I bought super cheaply years ago + gifts from relatives, and those are most of the physical books I read. Otherwise I prostrate myself at the shrine of Anna's Archive.
>>
For the last year or so I've noticed that every once in a while a large, red light will appear in the lower left corner of my left eye. It is most noticeable when my eyes are closed and changes shapes often, sometimes it's just a strange blob, sometimes it's a square, sometimes it's just a small jagged line. I've noticed that occasionally if I look at it and think about it changing color, I can get it to change from red to blue to green.

I've recently discovered that drinking water when it shows up is a good to way to get it to fuck off. I have no fucking idea what's going on.
>>
worth remembering: the way you act (or just the way you ‘are’) betrays so much about your true feelings. it’s imperceptible to you but totally on the surface to everyone else (n.b. esp girls). people have spent centuries finding tricks to deceive but it’s 99% useless (unless you don’t say more than two sentences to people). people see through. on an intuitive level. the only way is to make your true self less embarrassing to be seen.

I'm not a nihilist but I like reading nihilist philosophy. They're just more entertaining to me. To me, life is like a game or theater, but nihilists are entertaining when they write about cosmic dread.
>>
>>25442493
I've also reached this conclusion. Despite all our best efforts at dissimulation, our "true selves" always come out in our expressions, actions, tone, diction. We can disguise or dampen them but we can never really escape them
>>25442475
I write more, and more quickly, when I'm typing. But I write a little better when I'm writing by hand. I think it's because of what you said, you have to do a little thinking to translate from head to hand just because it's slower. If I'm trying to figure out what I think about something, I'll type. If I'm trying to articulate something I already think, I'll handwrite

If you're interested at all and you know who the novelist Lauren Groff is (you should she's great) I once went to one of her readings where she said her process is to handwrite the entire first draft of a new novel on legal pads, and when it's done she throws them away and the second draft is typed from memory. Always thought that was fascinating
>>

That is interesting, and while I doubt I'll try exactly that, I'll definitely keep it in mind.

When I was younger I was particularly obsessed with Nabokov, so I was enamored with his notecard method, particularly because it's conductive to rewrites (ie you finish a notecard, then you write it out again with changes, as opposed to an entire page).

i currently am disenchanted with my life. i wish that i had money. but deep inside i know that money isnt everything. i wish i could live off my art. im better off than i was a couple years ago but its hardly cathartic. i wish i lived in an another country where i wouldnt have to deal with the weight of the modern world but i also feel that im just going to be the same when i move there. ultimately i want a family but i know that i must prove myself to the world first, meaning i need a stable career so i could provide for them. i go back again to my artwork and feel dejected since im not making money off my passion. im in school for a more lucrative career but im also scared that when i have this career, i will be too busy or occupied to make art. maybe thats a cope, its all conjecture but these fears come cyclically everyday. its hard to sit still. i feel like im constantly losing time. my perfect day consists of working out in the morning and making breakfast (2-3 hours) making art (3-4 hours) reading (1-2) hours but then what? i dont know
>>
I need to continue reading and losing weight. I used to weigh 160 pounds, but because of covid and not seeing friends, I gained 30 pounds. I've always had issues with my weight--when I was in high school, during junior year, my highest weight was 230. I lost 70 pounds when I transferred to a different high school, but with the loss, I never regained (or rather _gained_) confidence in my body or myself. In one particular memorable episode (that happened not too long ago), I fasted all day, then at 10:00 pm, I binged on food my father brought home. I then threw a tantrum (I'm 18 btw), took a kitchen knife, and sliced my forearm 15 times. All the wounds were superficial, and it barely hurt, but it made me feel better. I'm scared I'll continue this pattern of fasting-binging-cutting and I'll never lose weight, I'll just be in this state of limbo, plateaued infinitely in this cycle.

I need to read because I have many books I have purchased but not read. I'm just starting to read--I've read Submission (by MH) and Siddartha (by HH)--but I need to continue my literary journey to become smarter and more knowledgeable, both of which are noble goals, at least I think so.

I also tend to feel guilt in my life over my status. I come from an upper middle class family (abt. $170,000 cumulative salary between my two parents) but I haven't achieved much so far. I've been given multiple opportunities to achieve great things, but my own indolence prohibited me from actually getting shit done; however, I believe it's better late than never. I'm starting to get things done (as I've mentioned, I've been reading more) and, since I've been off Lexapro, I've had the motivation to do more. Things are looking up. I just need to keep it up and I'll make it bros. We all will make it.
>>
>>25443081
Try extended fasting, 24 hours or more. YMMV but I feel subjectively way less hungry having nothing at all than if I eat a little bit, something to do with blood sugar I guess. You create big deficits that are hard to undo in a single binge session plus you learn to break food addiction.
Don't break long fasts (36hrs+) with a big meal or you'll shit your brains out. Have a little hot soup or something and ease into regular meals.

revel = latin root rebellare (to rebel, to wage war), in Old French the meaning shifted to from rebellion to party, this historical movement is preserved in English with revel.
reveal = comes from the latin word revelare (to unveil, to uncover), which is a transitory verb re- (Latin prefix for the opposite of the following verb) and velare (to cover with a veil, to cover [explicitly with velum]).
revelation = take from revelation but the interesting thing is that it appeared in Old French first as revelacion, from the root verb revel (which if you remember shifted to party in Old French). It comes into the English lexicon around the 14th century which is 235 years that the British Crown spoke french and is an interesting word in that it keeps the old original Latin spelling when it entered the English language, which can get confusing because... ...Well... French, German, and English are very good at not following their own rules.

>Dubus's life was marked by several tragedies. The rape of his daughter caused Dubus many years of paranoia over his loved ones' safety.[8] Dubus carried personal firearms to protect himself and those around him, until the night in the late 1980s, when he almost shot a man who was in a drunken argument with his son outside a bar in Haverhill.[9]

>On July 23, 1986, Dubus was driving from Boston to his home in Haverhill and stopped to help two people at the scene of an accident. A third vehicle hit the three of them. Dubus' back was broken and both his legs were crushed.[10] After a series of operations, his right leg was amputated above the knee, and he eventually lost the use of his left leg.

>To help Dubus with mounting medical bills, his friends and fellow writers Ann Beattie, E.L. Doctorow, John Irving, Gail Godwin, Stephen King, John Updike, Kurt Vonnegut, and Richard Yates held a special literary benefit in Boston and raised $86,000.

>Despite his efforts to walk with a prosthesis, chronic infections led to him using a wheelchair for the remainder of his life, and he battled clinical depression. Over the course of these struggles, his wife left him, taking with her their two young daughters.

I don't know, once I turned 27, it hit me: I care so much about reading the best literature, the finest of the greatest art, so why not for music? Something like, oh, Pavement or Joy Division or Pxies or The Velvet Underground is closer to genre fiction than it is high literature. You want Joyce, Proust, Shakespeare, Dante, Milton, Homer, but for music? That's not Brian Wilson or Ian Curtis or David Byrne, it's Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Mahler, Brahms, Schumann.

With a small dash of "this is what adults are supposed to move onto at some point"

And I say that as someone who's seen Animal Collective, LCD Soundsystem, Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, Mac Demarco, etc, all live at some point.
>>
Oh god, I'm fucked. I don't want to go to work tomorrow. Sure I had a day off, but I'm going back to a workplace that will be under-staffed with a bunch of customers and malcontents pissed that they aren't getting their thing fast enough. I'm pre-emptively sick of all the dysfunctional and dirty humans I'm going to have to deal with tomorrow. I could quit, but I know that's materially irrational. My base-pay is at about the median for my country and when you pile on medical and care benefits, as well as the holidays government employees also get and it's technically, TECHNICALLY, not bad.
I just have to remind myself that this despair is separate from the particular job, and any other job I would have that involves people will also have these problems. I know I should stop complaining, since many people have it objectively worse, yet, going in day-after-day to this job is wearing me down. I hope I leave before I do something drastic.

>She has a boyfriend but we see each other on the side
>He apparently does nothing except work and play vidya and she's obsessed over how I speak to her, take her out, and can talk to her about /lit/ and classics
>We got out last weekend and have a great time, her boyfriend suspects soemthing as well and it looks like we're going to end up together
>She phones me yesterday in a guilt spiral and tells me how she can't break up at the minute and needs spece to think and not lead a double life

Sartre says hell is other people. The 21st century version is hell is needing other people.

I hope so, she's said things to me that are very serious and deep about building a life together, how she's infatuated with me etc. and I believe her but I feel she's acting fully out of guilt and expectation when she needs to drop this faggot that she still likes for some reason.

I didn't 'force' myself to like anything, but rather, put in the time to familiarize myself with the composers, the genres, and the form, and then realized I enjoyed it. It's no different than getting acclimated to any unfamiliar music. I remember I had a similar reaction the first time I listened to AnCo's Strawberry Jam when I was 13, I thought the opening track was noise lol.

It's like how reading Shakespeare or Joyce isn't gonna be the same as reading 4chan or YouTube comments, "no one speaks that way anymore, you're forcing yourself to like it!" but that's silly.

In any case, I'm not saying it's classical or you're a pleb -- I'm sympathetic to arguments suggesting classical doesn't quite touch the heart of the postmodern man -- I'm just outlining my own reasons.

>>25443663
It's possible she's doing this so she doesn't seem like a cheating ho. It's a process, like how girls don't give it up on the first date even if they want to. I might write a short story about this. Anyway, wish you best of luck!

>this is what adults move onto
your words.
should go without saying we must take everything on its own merits. attaching literature to classical in your head is a category error anyway that shows distance, not intimacy, with the subject. the more you fetishise something, the more you distort it. wilm shaxpy obviously would’ve never heard classical, he’d have liked the old folks songs & ballads. i guess that’s next in your music journey.

I mean in the same way adults move onto serious literature and not genre fiction, yeah. The same way adults move onto serious art films and not blockbusters and Marvel, yeah. The same way adults stop playing video games and stop listening top 40 pop. You just don't wanna admit this parallel perfectly applies to the classical-pop-music dichotomy.

It's the fucking coldest and loneliest thing on Earth, it's ridiculous, it should make me laugh. You blow a couple grand on pieces of elaborately shaped silicone and medically approved lubricants and spend a couple hundred hours curled in an undignified ball on top of a towel on the shower or on the floor and dealing with it all, the fucking smell like weird dead fish that never lived, the cleaning before and after, sometimes stretching too fast too soon and coming away sore, using the wrong liquid and feeling a little burning that makes you stop for the afternoon. Sometimes it works and it works too well and you get overwhelmed, you feel like a god, you want to keep going and going and going and going and your feet don't touch the ground and you think I don't need anything else I need this for ever and later it's like you forgot yourself and remember again, there are two of you, you're looking at the other one through the window and watching what happens and it's not happening to you, you can't feel it, you can only see how sad it looks from the outside. It's building your own tower of Babel. You're trying to reach heaven by violence and by hauling big blocks of pleasure from a quarry in Mesopotamia and stacking them high and higher until you think you can put your hands in the sky and pull the sun down and feel it in your palm and it doesn't work. At the top there's just wind, empty wind, wind from every valley and every cliff and every mountain top on every corner of the world, blowing through you with nothing to hold on to. You're trying to replace people when you do it and it doesn't work. You think you can replace but the replacement is just an attempt to simulate the thing you think you're replacing and every moment it reaches a peak it just points back at what it is not with more strength. One thousand hours squeezing and grinding out the double-plus-good pleasure from my body, from my lower body, from the tiny area low in my body where it lives, and one second of one single hug from someone who gave a shit would leave it in the dust, and there's no one.

do they? as kingsley amis got older he basically refused to read a novel that didn’t begin with ‘a shot rang out’. a lot of genre fiction (esp in the last century) beats out most the literary fiction. you can’t have a genuine relationship with art if you aren’t actually thinking for yourself. if we’re (you’re) not free to reject classical, we aren’t free to genuinely embrace and appreciate it.

Again, I didn't force myself to like classical, it was more now that I am an adult, who seeks to enjoy mature, intellectual things, I should give classical a try, and I found out I enjoy. For the record, I do listen to some of the old rock stuff when I go out and about, I'm not so autistic I listen to classical in the car or whatever lol.

That said, I still maintain that as a denizen of /lit/, you ought to at least familiarize yourself with the most famous names and works in classical, the same way we all seek to achieve a basis level of being well-read, no matter how much one may love literature.

Alright, fair enough then :)

I don't think a basic level of education is too much to ask for. You don't need to be able to quote TS Eliot off the dome but if you haven't read some Shakespeare and Cervantes and Kafka and Milton and Homer and Dante and Keats and... it's just a standard level of humanity.

this sort of mind isn’t suited to the arts imo. and it’s reflected in your choices of artists (proust joyce homer dante beethoven bach mozart), there’s no personality it’s just the canon. orson welles said something pretty good about this -

Notice I said "read" and not "cherish". The canon is the canon because they're all works you should at least try. Anyway I'm gonna lay down and listen to some Prokofiev. Have a good one, thanks for the conversation :)

Anon, not to flaunt but I have over 20 different sets of Chopin's Nocturnes in my library! I do love Rubinstein's Chopin but these days I try to stick to newer recordings, if not only to show support for contemporary musicians -- silly? Perhaps.

rubinstein in particular is super, beats horowitz despite being technically not as good a pianist. never practiced. he liked to enjoy life. played clinkers all the time. said he played it better with the clinkers. seems relevant somehow to the conversation.

There's a lot of anime of boys turning into girls. There's one in which a boy turns into a girl, and his girlfriend accepts this and continues their relationship. But what if you reversed the roles, your girlfriend turns into a boy. Are you going to continue that relationship? I 100% would be a lesbian if I were turned into a girl, but the reverse makes me hesitant.

Both my parents are alive, my daughter is the most amazing and wonderful toddler that ever lived, and I already bought the ring, I’m just waiting for my girlfriend to stop being a bitch for long enough to actually give it to her.

Yes hello good afternoon. I have no self-control unless I have someone looking over my shoulder holding me accountable. The moment my boss is out of the office I do nothing productive. I have several small, easy tasks to accomplish today and I have not done them. Furthermore, the longer I procrastinate, the sense of dread and anxiety grows in the pit of my stomach. The most shameful aspect of this, to me, is that I do not even have the courage to slack off in a way that's exciting or even in a way that's fun. I could get out of the office and sit by the pool or go for a walk around the city. I could feed the ducks in the park or spend the afternoon fishing or play a quick nine. I could take a long lunch at a decent restaurant and see a movie. But I haven't done any of these things. Instead I've doom scrolled and looked at some porn on the computer. Even my transgressions are dull and boring. For the first time in years the pistol in the corner of the office keeps catching my eye. Every time I look at it I keep picturing shooting myself in the head. That scares me and I don't like having thoughts like that again.
>>
>>25444514
Alright, that was a good one.

ADHD sucks because I can’t force myself to do things, yet I feel shame and anxiety over truly going ham as I do have a sense of obligation.

It was none of those things. But I don't think I should say, because, although it's small in terms of crimes, it is something that would genuinely upset a lot of people and his actions will have consequences, even if they don't reach us.
