this morning i got the idea that i wanted to clean my room. i took out all the rubbish and put it in the bin. and as i closed the bin lid i noticed i trapped a slug in it, i guess almost chopping it down the centre. it writhed and squirmed. and i asked chatgpt of slugs feel pain. GPT, sounding pleased with itself, said not exactly, but they show every sign of distress, which struck me as a fairly comprehensive way of not answering the question. and it occurred to me whatever we know about slugs, however extensive it may be, doesn’t come close to the truth. that was a soul. i asked should i put it out its misery quickly. it said maybe but just forget about it. i looked, and couldn’t. i knew i’d be seeing it later and i’ll keep an eye on it, it might recover… then i forgot. went about my day.
then i happened to be binning something and saw… a dried shrivel lying in the place where it was. a third of its original size. no longer being and now simply mineral, entirely still. gone, in other words, and gone some time. if such feelings are available to slugs it’d have died alone and confused, chewed off slowly by the parasites of the universe.
as me and everyone i ever care about inevitably will. and maybe the sooner the better.

Damn. That said, there is a difference between doing something to enemy combatants (even if POWs and a war crime) versus your own citizens. And I guess the idea is that the same US Government still exists, whereas Imperial Japan does not. That's just my cursory take.
