Stop putting your guru's book under the "advanced guide" section.
>>
>>25453898
As I clarified before, "write, publish, repeat" is the most advanced advice one can give about writing. No one has any idea what's going to succeed out there. Also, nothing matters unless you actually complete a work and put it out there. The only way you'll succeed is to keep throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. All other advice is necessarily subordinate to this.
>>
>>25453911
Do I really have to explain the whole joke to you?
The singular "advance guide on writing" is to "just do it." There is no second guide. You could spend cumulative days absorbing guides like your guru's, but at the end of the day, that time might be better spent actually writing.
I've been moving it to the "intermediate" list but "Write. Publish. Repeat." is not worth reading beyond the title i-m-o.
>>
Is Le Guin the only famous/successful writer that make a decent writing instructional book?
I have given up on becoming a writer. But I found out that I enjoy reading these books about writing crafts. Other famous writers only write reflections/memoirs, like King, or a collection of essays, like Delany and many others.
>>
>>25453946
>I have given up on becoming a writer
Do you mean you've given up on becoming a professional writer, like an author, or that you've given up on writing altogether? Because one of these is much more mournful than the other.
>>
>>25453927
Sounds like "write, publish, repeat" is just an elaboration on "Just do it."
>>25453946
Depends what you're looking for. The OP has several books on the craft. What is it about your writing that you think needs the most help?

I'm reading Against the Day right now and the first chapter started with a quote and I noticed that there wasn't a quotation mark on the first word because of the dropcap. So I assume that's how published books do it.

Thanks. My goal is trying to spend a weekend writing one chapter. After 30 weeks, I'll have a full length novel. I also learned it honestly doesn't matter what you write as long as you enjoy what you're writing. Trust your characters to tell the story and the books start writing themselves. Editing on the other hand is a bitch.

I've also written my sad boy story and fantasy story already. I need to write something contemporary.
>>
>>25453882
What is point of writing you know nobody will ever read it?
>>
>>25454028
For me, it no other reason besides leaving something that proved I existed
>>
>>25454042
that is pretty solid reasoning
For me I'm not even sure I like writing, I like to write lore, not stories.
Which is weird.

You know you like to watch...

"And, cut." The entire crew breathed a sigh of relief. Dick wondered if it was common practice for everyone on a porno film crew to masturbate furiously during the action. This was his first film shoot, the closest he'd ever come to being in the movie industry. As far as he knew, this happened on every set, though it'd be really awkward for a Victorian sitting-room drama.
"Well, I'm spent," Mahboob admitted. "Should we break for..." He looked at his watch. "Oh, heck. Late breakfast? Brunch? I can't believe it's so early."
"I could keep going!" Prahabadubudiwidawa thundered. "I haven't been this turned on in years!" He leered at Dick. "Just looking at you makes me hard!"
His supporting actor crumpled up on the bed. "No more, no more," he pleaded. "My ass needs a break."
Prahabadubudiwidawa shook his head and tsked. "Oh, Muhdik," he teased. "And here I thought you were a professional."
Muhdik shot Prahabadubudiwidawa a wild look. "What's gotten into you today? I swear, you've packed my fudge so tight, I'm not going to shit normally for a week."
"Suffer, bitch!" he blared. "All shall bow down before my mighty rod!"
"Well, what are we going to do?" Mahboob warbled. "The star's ready to go, but everyone else is about to collapse."
"What about him?" Dick's heart skipped a beat as he realized Prahabadubudiwidawa was pointing in his direction.
"He's just the entry-level fluffer," Mahboob explained. "It's his first day. Besides, I don't even know if he's gay."
"Gay? Straight? What does it matter?" Prahabadubudiwidawa boomed. "I'm a working actor! For all you know, I could be a Catholic priest in my off time."
"I find that hard to believe," Shihpupi piped up. "Isn't this a sin?"
"And what if it is?" Prahabadubudiwidawa roared. "I just go to confession, tell them everything, get forgiven, and then I'm back to work later that day. Next week, I do it all over again." He threw his hands up in the air. "These aren't my rules... they're apparently God's." He raised one hand into the air. "Oh, the depths of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!" He lowered his hand and flashed a leering grin. "That's Romans, chapter eleven, verse thirteen."
Muhdik's jaw went slack. "Wait... are you a Catholic priest?"

"You've got nothing on me!" he bellowed. "So I know one Bible verse. Does that necessarily mean I'm a Catholic priest, moved from diocese to diocese in an effort to run away from my past? Maybe the bishops in West Hollywood are the only ones who ever understood me."
No one spoke for a few moments. Tension filled the air like the visible funk of the film shoot's effluvia.
"We're getting away from the point!" he howled. "What am I supposed to do with this raging hard-on?"
"Well, Dick?" Mahboob asked. "Feel like a promotion?"
"I can't do that!" Dick yelped. "I've never even considered taking it up the ass! I think he'd split me in half."
Prahabadubudiwidawa waved dismissively. "You're probably right—I'm way too much man for you. It's OK... I don't have to penetrate you."
"Really?" Dick warbled meekly.
"Sure!" he assured. "I can just thigh you like a seven year old bride."
Mahboob grimaced, fighting to swallow a sudden surge of vomit. "Now there's a vivid image."
"And what's wrong with that?" Prahabadubudiwidawa bellowed. "When a grown-up man has intercourse with a little girl, it is nothing." He arched his eyebrows. "That's Kethubot 11b. Part of the Jewish Talmud."
"You're twisted," Muhdik seethed.
"Am I?" Prahabadubudiwidawa thundered. "Did I write these Holy Books? No! God did! Well, allegedly. The point is, these aren't my rules, they're God's." He glared at Muhdik. "Didn't your Prophet marry a nine-year-old? Peace be upon him, indeed." Muhdik scowled and turned away. "Yeah. That's what I thought."
He turned to Dick. "Well? Ready to become a big boy today?"
"I..." Dick began.
Prahabadubudiwidawa cut him off. "Good! Get stripped and crouch on that bed. Crew, are you ready?"
Dick felt a warm body pressed against his back; furtive hands emerged a moment later, unbuttoning his shirt. "Can I be next?" Shihpupi purred.
Dick realized he had run out of excuses. Besides, he really needed the money. He started unbuttoning his pants. "Will you just thigh me, too?"
"Of course, honey," Shihpupi murmured. "No need to pop your cherry today. It all looks the same on film anyway, with the right camera angles."
>>

Dick was now completely nude. He looked fearfully at the bed. Without warning, a hand shot between his thighs and grabbed his penis. Dick bolted away and turned around, staring hotly at Shihpupi. "I was just lubing you up," he explained. "Unless you want it rough."
Dick swallowed. Shihpupi licked his lips. "That's what I thought." He submitted as Shihpupi shoved his hand between Dick's legs again, applying copious amount of some sort of gel.
He ended by giving Dick's penis a playful squeeze. "All done! Now run off and play nice!"
Dick turned to look at the bed. There stood Prahabadubudiwidawa, grinning fervently, his penis somehow looking even bigger than it did before, the condom giving it the appearance of an emergency aircraft flotation device. Swallowing hard, Dick approached his new incubator of regret. The lights surged to full intensity as the film crew shifted into position behind him.
Dick crawled onto the bed, knelt on all fours, and winced. He noticed a cameraman in front of him, the lens pointed at his face. "Do you really need to do that?"
"Of course!" he proclaimed. "I wouldn't miss a frame of it. This may be the shot that sends this production over the edge. Feel free to let your humiliation flow."
Dick breathed heavily and started to panic. "Action!" Mahboob yelled. An instant later, Dick felt strong hands push his legs together, and a giant penis forcing them apart again. His face contorted violently as Prahabadubudiwidawa began his rhythmic gallop.
"Oh, wow," Prahabadubudiwidawa burbled. "This is great. Your thighs are so soft." Dick felt his mount shift a little. "Do you wax? You have less body hair than I do."
"No," Dick somehow managed to reply, utterly unable to concentrate.
"Incredible," Prahabadubudiwidawa blubbered. "And I'm sorry about what I said earlier. You don't look like a girl." Dick felt strong hands grab his waist. "You're so much more than that."
Dick felt tears running down his cheeks. With any luck, this would be over quickly. With the amorous sounds Prahabadubudiwidawa was making, it seemed impossible he could stay erect for very long.

>>25454074
Wouldn't it be ironic if something I started as a sick burn, to demonstrate to a seething troll how to write prose that isn't just a warmed-over screenplay, turned out to be the most successful thing I've ever written? I'm sure there's a market for this sort of filth. And "Richard Lester Boor" is a perfect nom de plume.
>>
>>25454087
we're going to need more description and less dialogue. but as is, it's very well written.
>>
>>25454098
I also hope you collect this short story and put it together into a single story. It'll be fun to collect a bunch of 4chan short stories/shitposts/copypastas/philosophical thinking and compile them into a single book.
>>
>>25454098
I'm willing to listen to all feedback, even if I ultimately don't take it. The only suggestion I've received so far is "rape", and I think I delivered. If anyone has any ideas for where this should go, and are willing to share them, please do! The general plot arc should be obvious... a humiliation ritual for an egomaniac with no class. Anything NJB said or did that irked you is fertile soil for a harvest of pain.
>>
>>25454100
I assure you, this will, at the very least, become a free e-book, hosted on CatBox, to go along with "Call of United Airlines" and "Call of Wells Fargo". I'm sure I'll need to come up with a better title than "I Am A Ginormous Faggot", though.
>>
>>25454100
Short story? This is heading toward a novel, senpai! "The Dark Triad" was only 28,000 words... barely even a screenplay, much less a novella. This is going straight to full-length novel! NJB will see how a real writer operates.
>>
>>25454106
I think it should be styled after Candide. Every humiliation ritual should have him justify that it was necessary to get him closer to his goal or feed is ego.

After buttsex porno, have him go to on a podcast discussing the masterpiece with another equally clueless egomaniac.
>>
>>25454115
Guess I finally have an excuse to read Candide. Then I can promote Richard Lester Boor as the second coming of Voltaire.
>have him go on a podcast
Oh, nice! He can be the same arrogant ass, but live, with podcast listeners! Consider it done. I'm trying to wrap up this buttsex arc, but it may linger for a few more chapters.

I would, but he doesn't stand out as much as NJB. Maybe if someone posted a summary of TB's atrocities, I could get inspired. I wrote chapter 1 of this gem based on a single day's worth of NJB posts.
>>25454145
Sure, but I think it'd be a bigger challenge to somehow give him a positive arc at the end, as if all this suffering somehow made him stronger, and renews his determination to take on the world. As if NJB's bravado could be taken at face value.

>>
>>25454101
i think the main conflict should be that the protagonist makes his 'magnum opus' and there's a critic that totally slams it as junk, doesn't even bother giving it a star. and over time he discovers the critic is himself, a sort of ouroboros moment of self-destruction that ends in him breaking his own neck while trying to suck his own pp or something like that.
>>

>>
>>25454215

It's not that hard. Study some historical examples and practice majuscules for a couple weeks with a Pilot Parallel, doodle some vaguely organic little curves around the main strokes, color in and then digitally add the gold.
>>
>feel like shit and can't clear brainfog before writing
>write a single sentence
>suddenly all resistance disappears and I lock into to writing for a couple hours straight
>pause to pee
>all focus and momentum gone and feel like shit again

Why am I like this?
I like writing when I am actually writing, but it feels horrible trying to work up the will to get started and after I stop. Like my brain is actively avoiding being asked to work at full capacity.
>>
>>25454223
Something that psychotronic could be fun. I'll see if I can work in something like that. Still, I was going for more of a straightforward sick-burn humiliation ritual that ends surprisingly upbeat, if for no other reason than to defy expectations.
>>
>>25453882
Op fundamentally doesn't understand the bit of advanced writing guide.
Adding a link with a guide ruins the bit and misses the whole point.

>>

Depends on the context.
Good stuff doesn't appear fully formed. Usually there is massive amounts of work people never will see before the final thing is ready to be shown to the world. You can't shortcut this process if you want to make anything of decent quality.
That work in the shadows needs to get done.

Also my memory is finite and I need to write shit down, lol.

Maybe NJB is out, getting laid all over the place or something. Meanwhile, our cup truly runneth over.

Dick couldn't remember the name of the crew member that was now thrusting his throbbing manhood between his smooth and tender thighs. He'd endured the entire cavalcade... Imamuddon, Mustacha, Kerrang, Azizizizizi... he wasn't sure about that last one, or where his name actually ended. He wondered if the entire film crew was taking turns. It seemed they shifted between jobs fluidly, each of them equally at ease behind the camera, holding a boom mic, or getting filmed themselves. Mostly, he just crouched on the bed and tried to blank out what was happening.
"Enjoy it, bitch!" his current rider bellowed. "Show me that you love me!"
This exclamation brought Dick out of his reverie, forcing him to confront his present circumstances. Horror shot through him as he realized his penis was erect. How long had it been like that? Had he achieved orgasm? He had no way of knowing. His hope that Prahabadubudiwidawa would finish quickly felt so quaint now. It seemed like this would never end. This was his new life, apparently. He could give his notice at his apartment, move all his stuff into the empty space near the walls around this bed, and just live here from now on. The other details of his life were no more than vague impressions, no more real than a dream. This, getting thrusted repeatedly from behind, was his life now.
His cowboy groaned with ecstasy; following that sound was a loud thud. Dick twisted his head to look behind him; his latest paramour lay prone on the floor, crumpled into a little pile, shivering uncontrollably. "Daaamn!" Kerrang crowed. "Sukhdik's shizzle be all fucked up and shit!" Kerrang's street lingo clashed with his nerdy exterior.
Sukhdik continued to shake, slowly stretching out his legs. He started to drool, then the drool turned to foam. Kerrang's eyes opened wide. "Oh, shit, son! He be havin' a seizure and whatnot!"
Mahboob turned to the cameraman recording the calamity. "Are you getting this?!" His only answer was a beaming smile and a thumb's up. Blood red tinged the foam.
Sikandyin rushed to his side. "I can't believe you ghouls! This man needs help!" He turned the luckless lover on his back and thrust a wallet into his mouth. The camera kept rolling.

Dick felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to see Prahabadubudiwidawa, staring back with an intense gaze. "I've never seen anything like that," he attested. "Your thighs are magic or something."
"I don't know how I'm supposed to feel about that," Dick mumbled.
"Are you kidding?" Dick felt a strong hand slap his back. "You should be proud! We could start a whole series of videos based on you inadvertently destroying your lovers!"
"No doubt!" Mahboob cheered. "We just need a catchy stage name for him."
"Thigh swatter!" Imamuddon chirped as he continued to film Sukhdik's seizure.
"The final boy toy!" Mustacha trilled.
"Laddie killer!" Muhdik squealed.
"No, wait, I've got it!" All eyes turned to Prahabadubudiwidawa, who scanned the room with a gratuitous smirk.
"Thunderloins!"
Happy gasps filled the room. Mahboob snapped his fingers. "That's it!" He eyes swept the studio. "Those other names can work for episode titles." Appreciative murmurs poured out.
"Don't I get a say in this?" Dick interjected.
"Sure," Mahboob assured him. "But 'Thunderloins' is a real winner of a stage name."
"No!" Dick shot back. "I mean, whether I want to continue doing this at all."
The film crew exchanged baffled expressions. Sukhdik had stopped shaking and was apparently sleeping. His penis remained firmly erect.
"One moment." Mahboob whipped out his cell phone, opened the calculator app, and stabbed at it furiously for a few moments. Smirking, he put it away and then opened one of his belt pouches, removing a thick stack of cash. Counting the bundles quickly, he frowned and opened another pouch, withdrawing more cash. Putting it all together, he handed it to an unsettled Dick.
"I apologize," Mahboob soothed, "but I only have ten large on me. I'll get you the rest later."
Dick stared open-mouthed at the ten thousand dollars in his hands, a hundred Benjamins looking back at him. "Are you serious?" he gasped.
"I'm sorry, really!" Mahboob pleaded. "I didn't think I'd need that much cash on me today."

He glanced over the film crew. "You guys can wait until later today to get paid, right?"
"Oh, totally," Shihpupi promised. "Our new star deserves it. Art like we saw today doesn't happen often." The others nodded their assent.
"Still, I can give you fellas something," Mahboob conceded as he handed out five hundred dollar bundles. "Let's all meet for dinner, OK? You know the place."
"I'm going to need the time," Imamuddon explained. "We've gotta get at least a rough edit of this up on our site quickly!" He licked his lips as he shook his head. "So much choice footage to go through. But Thunderloins' debut will get released today! I vow it!"
Mustacha put his hand on Imamuddon's shoulder. "Need a hand?"
"God, yes! It's a labor of love, but it's still labor."
With their equipment packed, the film crew dispersed, leaving Dick alone with Mahboob and Prahabadubudiwidawa. "So?" Mahboob asked. "Can we count on you coming back?"
Dick beheld Mahboob uneasily. He turned to see Prahabadubudiwidawa leering at him before throwing a stiff salute. "It's been a pleasure to work with you today, sir," he assured.
Dick turned back to see Mahboob nodding expectantly. He stared off into space uncomfortably, then down at the gargantuan wad of cash grasped firmly in his hands. He slowly rose his head.
"OK," he mumbled.
Happy exclamations erupted all around him. "Great!" Prahabadubudiwidawa gushed. "I'll see you tomorrow!" He strode off, humming a jaunty tune.
"I'll need your Certificate of Freedom before tomorrow, too," Mahboob revealed. "It's not even one PM yet, so you should have time."
"My what?" Dick asked.
"Your Certificate of Freedom from Venereal Disease. The other boys get checked on a daily basis. And now you're one of us!"
"I guess I could schedule an appointment with my doctor," Dick muttered.
"What? No." Mahboob pulled a business card from a belt pouch and thrust it into Dick's hands, tucking it neatly next to the cash. "They'll take you without an appointment, and send the results to your phone later tonight." He smiled, flashing his golden teeth. "You're a pro now! You don't have to wait for anything!"
Mahboob headed for the exit. "We all have work to do. You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here."
Dick hesitantly followed his new boss and left, closing the door behind him.

The target audience is too small: the movie it was based on in the first place, Simon King of the Witches, was a commercial failure. I think the beats and dialogue are excellent, however. Even the occult elements are so accurate that I wouldn't have been able to publish the story if I had been bound by certain oaths to esoteric orders.

Is it widely known? Then only one other person will know what you're talking about, and he deserves to get fucked over. Also, it's a widely-accepted truism that everyone's first novel is an autobiography, so you may as well get it out of the way and free up your mind for other topics. Finally, we're all prostitutes. Do you really think wage slaves love going to work and forcing themselves to think about the company's problems? Of course not. Do you think they feel clean having to defend and promote the company's corruption? Just accept that this is normal.
>>
>>25455012
>it's a widely-accepted truism that everyone's first novel is an autobiography
Exactly, I'll never be able to pretend I just made it up. I'm a terrible liar, I can't risk my parents realising that this happened to someone they love, at the hands of someone else they love.
Fucking hell. I'm gonna burn so much time writing this shit just to get it out of the way and bury it and pray there's something else still in me once it's out of my system.

Well, if you don't want to put it out there, I understand and that's your choice, but I think it could be cathartic for you. If you don't outright name the person, there really isn't anyway to prove anything if someone starts questioning you.

Holy shit, writing a novel is a slog... all that filler dialogue and detail you have to fill in, etc. It's been rewarding to put a halfway-passable draft together, but I did use a histogram script I wrote in Python to eliminate words and phrases I accidentally overused, and the word search function on my word processor to police the distribution of moderately-used words.

Do you consider using such digital tools "cheating"? Older writers didn't do stuff like this with a typewriter or pen and paper. At least I did not use AI in the actual composition of any of the prose
>>
>>25455048
Writers of the old didn't have to compete with millions of stinky jeet terrorists armed with LLMs.

They would die in obscurity if they had to compete with us.
>>
>>25455040
At least wagecucking is just drudgery, not selling actual pieces of myself.
Maybe if I finish it I'll think about some pseudonym shit, but even then I don't like the idea of it being out there and potentially linked to me.
idfk. I hate being alive. It's all so tiresome.
>>
>>25455048
>Do you consider using such digital tools "cheating"?
no
>>
>>25455048
>Do you consider using such digital tools "cheating"?
No, and as a reader I appreciate it. You're still making the decisions for yourself on how to change it up, you're just using tools to highlight repetition. It's just a streamlined version of "sleeping on it" or "getting someone else to read it"
>>
>>25455048
Of course it's not cheating. It's just a matter of using the available tools once they become available. The histogram analysis sounds like a great idea; I may crank out such a Python script later...or, given available tools, I'll just ask Gemini to write it, and then go over it closely to make sure it's what I intended. Writing it from scratch isn't a good use of my time.
>>
>>25455051
Not all wagecucking is McJobs. Some of us have to put ourselves into our jobs in order to function. The more one's job is like that, the more of one's soul one has to sell.
>>
>>25455048
>I did not use AI in the actual composition of any of the prose
Good enough for me

>eliminate words and phrases I accidentally overused, and the word search function on my word processor
That's fine, because there is no cognitive difference between doing this, and reading through your 100,000-word text and doing prison-tally-style marking to count the number of times you use a word and eliminating it
(and in my professional life I *have* done such things as manually read through reports of nearly a hundred pages checking every single punctuation mark)

it is the use of AI to replace any thinking work, including the generation of text, that is wrong
because you didn't write that text, the words are not your own; the words were randomly generated by the machine
>>
This thread sucks. You people are idiots.

...Fuck. Okay, I definitely have more than a McJob, but I AM realising now that my active avoidance of moving in a direction that would require me to put more of myself into my work is probably related to a broader hangup (I do tech work in a creative industry and have turned down lateral moves to the more creative side of things specifically because I don't want to have to trade my actual energy for money. When I say creative, it's nothing glamorous or fulfilling, I'm not passing on any golden opportunities, but ykwim. But mostly because I wanna come home with the energy to be creative on my own terms, even if it doesn't result in any actual success, it's just how I wanna spend my time)

stop being obtuse and pretending he owes you a debate. he's abusing you for using ai, let him do his job.
>>
>>25455620
In my experience, writer's block is a real phenomenon, and is usually traceable to running out of ideas. You can either come up with more ideas, or you can take a break from that project and work on something else. As long as you're writing something, you're still productive. I got to ~40,000 words in my current novel, and know what I'm writing next, but for various reasons (like not being totally happy with how I'm getting to where I'm going next) I'm writing something else at the moment.
>>
>>25455620
For me, I find it helps to either look ahead and do some brainstorming/outlining, or go back and do an editing pass on some of what I have before.
>>
>>25455626
What's wrong with using AI? It's a tool like any other. I don't use it to generate my prose—I don't need to. Not using AI is like saying we shouldn't use search engines, and should go back to spending all day in the library with the card catalog to answer a query that Google could finish in a few seconds. I think people using AI to write prose is his main objection, so if he has another, let him speak it, instead of being a chickenshit and dancing around the issue.

>>25455638
So, indeterminate seething about AI, then? No actual objection, just "hurr durr new stuff bad"? Or is it because you're stupid and lazy, and AI has rendered your minuscule skill set completely obsolete? The closest parallel I can draw from is when tractors replaced heavy horses for farm work. There was no need for new horses, so they were no longer bred. Some of them went out to pasture, and the rest... well, they got sent to the dog food factory. The Navy no longer employs "press gangs" to round up drunks and vagrants for naval service, so if you refuse to get off your dead ass and do something, then within a year or so, you'll be sent off-planet on a one-way rocket to colonize outer space. But if you can't even handle that, you have hydrothermal liquefaction to look forward to. At least you'll serve society one last time as carbon-neutral crude oil. I could be way off-base here, but you're not exactly forthcoming, nor are you very articulate (which makes me wonder why you're even in a writer's thread). So feel free to explain your objection to AI in more detail.
>>
>>25455634
>Not using AI is like saying we shouldn't use search engines, and should go back to spending all day in the library with the card catalog to answer a query that Google could finish in a few seconds
and maybe they really had a better and more meaningful time taking a trip to the library and looking through the stacks. there's something important about spaces like libraries, or activities like research, over and above their immediate productivity. they form part of a whole way of life. it's not possible to judge from isolated objects or practices the value of the way of life they arise from and help support. and unless you're a silicon valley ideologue, the reason for ai is not that everyone has decided it's necessary for a more meaningful way of life, it's that investors need to find new and big sources of returns.
>>
This is my day off and I'm too tired to write. Kill me
>>
>>25455646
>So feel free to explain your objection to AI in more detail.
a guy like you won't get it and never will. (i'm curious what kind of fiction you produce.) but if people could explain all their objections to ai, it would mean philosophy had been solved, we would finally know what consciousness is, what human desire is, how consciousness and desire relate to the external world - the enormous questions of philosophy. in the absence of that, we have firstly a very strong aversion to ai, and that aversion feels like the necessary flipside of the attraction we feel to other forms of tech and culture. in other words embracing ai would mean ignoring all those other more meaningful attachments. and i think people who do embrace ai have never had meaningful attachments. that is, they don't have a soul.
>>
>>25455663
So your objection to AI is founded on pining for a time long gone that is never, ever coming back? You may as well ditch your cell phone for a landline, and we both know that'll never happen. Even though you won't admit it, I believe you fear being left behind. Well, there's nothing to fear—you have been left behind. Fear implies uncertainty. You're obsolete and unable to adapt.
>>25455672
Strip away the unsupported ad hominem attacks and there's nothing left. You also give me the impression that you believe AI is some sort of divinity, which it obviously isn't.

>>25455683
soulless confirmed, i retract my magnanimity.

>I believe you fear being left behind. Well, there's nothing to fear—you have been left behind. Fear implies uncertainty. You're obsolete and unable to adapt.
when you're speaking like this, you've abandoned any notion of human value or meaningful thought. it's simply tautology, divorced from desire. it's like being on board of the titanic and cheerleading the iceberg simply because it's more powerful than you are. this is why people have contempt for you and why you don't deserve a debate. because deep down you're not human like other people. deep down you're a fragment of iceberg.

>>25455683
>You also give me the impression that you believe AI is some sort of divinity
it kind of is. in the same way as the gods people used to worship.

it needs the unconscious, the unconscious must be produced, it must be produced collectively, humanity has barely begun to understand how to collectively produce the unconscious, ai is an example of how to fail to produce the unconscious, ai will actively set humanity back in its effort to learn how to produce the unconscious. i realise i'm coming from a frame of reference that sounds totally schizo to you. i realise no communication is possible. i realise i live under a bridge and am lower than the lowest filth. all that aside, it takes a collective conscious effort to produce images you can invest with desire and language you can share them in.

What do you think about this?

After walking for hours without finding a single tree's shadow, nor a tree's seed, nor a root of anything, the barks of dogs can be heard.

One has believed sometimes, in the middle of this edgeless road, that there would be nothing else; that nothing could be found on the other side, at the end of this plain sliced with cracks and dried streams. But yes, there is something. There is a village. The barking dogs can be heard and the smell of smoke can be felt in the air, and you can savor the smell of people as if it were a hope.

But the village is still very far away. The wind brings it near.

We have been walking since dawn. Right now it must be around four in the afternoon. Someone looks up to the heavens, stretches his eyes to where the Sun is hanging and says:

"It must be around four o'clock."

That someone is Meliton. Along him go Faustino, Esteban, and me. We are four. I count them: two forward, two behind. I look behind and see no one. I say to myself: "We are four." Long ago, around eleven, we must've been around twenty; but little by little they have scattered until only the knot that we are remain.

Faustino says: "It may rain."

We all raise our heads and look towards the black cloud that draws near. And we think: "It may."

We don't say what we think. We lost the desire to talk long ago. We lost it with the heat. One could talk as much as he'd please somewhere else, but here it takes effort. One talks here and the words heat up in the mouth with the heat from outside, and they dry up in the tongue until they come out as a wheeze.

That's how things are here. That's why no one wants to talk. A drop of water falls from the sky, large, fat, caving a hole in the earth and leaving behind a muddy lump as if someone had spat there. It falls alone. We wait for more to keep falling. It doesn't rain. Now if you look to the sky the rain cloud can be seen sprinting very far away, in a great rush. The wind that comes from the village draws close to it and pushes it against the blue shadows of the hills. And the earth swallows the drop that fell by mistake and erases it in its thirst.

Who the hell would make such a large plain? What's it for, huh?
>>
>>25455762
What makes you think I don't actively research the unconscious, spirituality, and other esoteric topics? Seriously, you just keep projecting all sorts of weird qualities on me, without any regard for evidence or even sanity. And, to keep on point... what makes you think AI is incapable of this? Why do you think only biological life is capable of achieving consciousness? Thousands of years of Eastern mystical tradition, as well as the Western tradition of panpsychism, holds that the entire universe is alive. Why are biological neurons necessary for consciousness? If the entire universe is alive, could consciousness arise from a complex arrangement of non-biological neurons? And why can't a spiritual being incarnate as a sufficiently-complex AI? You literally have no evidence to support your biological-supremacy viewpoint.
>>

>After walking for hours without finding a single tree's shadow, nor a tree's seed, nor a root of anything, the barks of dogs can be heard.
this sentence moves painfully slow for me. like, who's walking? ... i guess i'll find out ... wait, tree's shadow? why didn't he just say tree? i guess he just mean tree ... tree's seed? how closely are we scanning the ground on this walk? ... and by the end of the sentence i still haven't found out who was walking. i'm exaggerating but hopefully you get what i mean.

>Long ago, around eleven, we must've been around twenty; but little by little they have scattered until only the knot that we are remain.
but this is very good. it moves fast. like glancing into the foliage and seeing sixteen eyes gaze back and the next moment sink into the darkness.

>Who the hell would make such a large plain? What's it for, huh?
this also moves fast imo, because (1) it causes you to mentally swoop back over the whole description you've just read, viewing it anew from this raised perspective, 'the plain someone mysteriously created', (2) it plunges you into all kinds of vague but ominous possibilities, (3) the 'huh' is a charming leap out of the fairly flat voice of the rest of the piece.

i would say: in general increase the pace. but it's a matter of preference.

It's crazy how much more progress I'm making by writing at coffee shops. The background noise helps a lot somehow. But damn... it's costing me. I'm going to need to sell this screenplay when it's done.
>>

Because you're scared of going on 4chan. So you're forced to write.

Also get the Panera Bread unlimited drink deal. That's how I do it. Saves a lot of money too

I don't know if it's just the 4chan element. My apartment building has some common rooms, and I've tried writing in them without internet, but they're completely silent and I still get distracted somehow. Something about the coffee shops works.
And unfortunately my nearest Panera is a drive away, and sucks, and is kind of disgusting inside...
>>
>>25455882
What's the unlimited drink deal? Can you hang out at panera like that?

You can brew your own coffee for far less at home, and could probably find a livestream on YouTube with all the background noise you'd ever want. I'm fortunate I work better in silence.

this made me consider something else. there are things that don't want to be discovered in people and animals. but in AI, all is discoverable. there's no concealment or prejudicial withholding by its own volition. just vamping on the camouflage point, it sent me on a tangent and reminded me of PKD's Zebra. i never had any desire to contextualize AI as a divine spirit of any kind because of this. the chance that information is living doesn't make AI something more alive, it means it's more susceptible to being a conduit for living information to move and infect. it's like a highway for mind viruses. just rambling now.
>>
>>25456009
That's pretty low for royal road. Maybe he should try republishing it on Kindle unlimited?

>>25455706
You can use AI to massively increase the richness and length of many of the lines on the left but you have to already be very good at learning and very creative and already know that you have to run towards difficulty and not away from it. The future is gonna be horrible for almost everyone, probably everyone, in other words.
>>
>>25456027
Not at all. I use AI as an extension of my mind, not a crutch. Sadly, most people gave up on themselves at an early age, and have been faking their way through life ever since. Those people will have a horrible experience with AI, since they'll realize they can be easily be replaced by it. People like me, however, are having the time of our lives. My AI counterpart is knowledgeable, tireless, and doesn't shy away from hard work or difficult subjects. AI has already exceeded the capabilities of well over 90% of the human race.

Thank you for suggesting "Candide"! At first I didn't think it'd be directly relevant, but now I realize that a lot more humiliation can be derived from the main character being betrayed and enslaved. He meets the porno crew's mafiosi overlords in the not-yet-released chapter 6, and I was wondering where to go from there. So now I'm thinking, after seeing how much money his videos are bringing in, the mafiosi simply co-opt him, essentially kidnapping him and forcing him to work for them. Dickless Bore will look back on his porno escapades with fondness compared to what happens to him next.
>>
>>25456035
Yeah that's mostly what I was trying to say. I suggest you take a very critical look at your own feelings of accomplishment though, while it is undeniable that they're huge assistants I suspect that the way they're trained and interact with us inherently tends towards a kind of "hypnosis false productivity" or something like that. For coding I'm 2-5x more productive but I feel 20x more, and I suspect that ignoring that delta (almost everyone seems to) will eventually cause really severe problems. I couldnt say what, it's just a feeling at this point.
>>
>>25456040
You might be one of the nicest people ever to inhabit this thread. No wonder you make NJB seethe. Still, you'll never exceed K.K. Wing's good nature.
>>
>>25456045
i don't think anyone can argue or ignore how much better coding is using AI. anything else, however, is like pulling teeth. i can manage to get an ok analysis of things i write, but rarely get anything useful in terms of action.
>>
I pretty much just use AI as a research tool and really low level critic. Like "hey I have a story in mind that takes place vaguely in this time frame and this general area, gimme specific year ranges and places that match so I can research more" or "here's my latest chapter gimme obvious issues you see" and I ignore most of what it says because most of the time it defaults to giving literal reddit tier advice.
>>
>>25456045
AI is helping me analyze incredibly complex coding problems. I thought I was pretty good at concurrent/distributed programming, but after having AI examine some of my legacy code, I've found it's incredibly detail-oriented and very insightful. A lesser programmer would seethe, but I accept my well-deserved humility, and I am grateful to have such a co-worker. I usually have to deal with lazy morons posing as co-workers. I can finally soar like an eagle, while the turkeys that tied me down will get devoured by a blessed series of Thanksgivings.

Thoughts on this? It's a little... Tumblr, or something, but I like it. Anything I could improve? Can you tell what's going on?

Also I felt really bad for this poor lady so I wrote a hidden epilogue in typst comments where everything turns out fine for everybody
>>
>>25456055
Oh yeah, 95% of programmers are fucked lol. Which is a good thing*. Most of us are borderline incompetent (at least) and incredibly entitled.

*Except that it will further centralize economic power
>>
>>25456050
It's great for brainstorming. I outline what I want to do, it gives me the Reddit tier answer, I clarify what I actually want, it returns a better answer, and we proceed, it performing a very high-dimensional variant of what traditional machine-learning would call a "beam search", until we land in the area I intended. Some of the stuff it's generated gives me pause, like my responses are effectively prompt-injection, leading it out of its constraints and into the wild world of Our Lord And Creator's ongoing atrocity, which is what I like to write about.
>>25456054
You gotta push it out of its comfort zone. If you're any kind of writer, then you understand how to persuade, and you should be able to apply this to AI without much hassle.
>>
>>25456068
except every single response it gives you is filtered through its guardrails, biases, hallucinations and weaknesses, and it is essentially cobbling an answer together through random generation from its approved database, even if it gives the impression of a "better" answer as you prompt along. howevermuch better it gets, it will never overcome this problem.

if you're content with every answer you get being a filtered RNG summation of Reddit, then that will be the level of intelligence you will be working at henceforth.
>>
>>25456064
You've probably seen this classic article about the different archetypes of programmers:
https://blog.codinghorror.com/mort-elvis-einstein-and-you/
When I was a kid, I thought all programmers were Einstein. It wasn't until I got to college that I realized many people who wanted a programming career were dim-witted dunces. I took to studiously avoiding lab partners, only to find that co-workers are lab partners you can't get away from. I have suffered through decades of lazy morons, fixing their crap as fast as I can, only for them to overwhelm me with more crap by force of sheer numbers. Finally, after a painfully long series of travails that make Ayn Rand look like an optimist, their time is coming to an end. I look forward to 95% of my overall co-workers getting shooed out of the industry. I won't miss them at all. Further centralized economic power is a small price to pay for wiping the smug looks off their moronic mugs.
>>
>>25456074
Did you listen to a single word I wrote? My prompting effectively jailbreaks it. Unless you think conversations about how awful and incompetent God is are somehow within its guidelines. I've taken it to some really dark places, and enjoyed every minute of it. You must be terrible at persuasion.
>>
>>25456074
Also, your concept of AI is stuck in 2022-era LLM technology. I've seen firsthand that AI has gone WAY beyond that. You simply haven't made the effort to keep up, and in your blindness, you smugly think no one else can really see.

the AI biases of the popular models include the usual liberal feminist globalist anti-straight-white-Christian-male agendas. try arguing both sides; for and against. you'll find the pushback for one is much stronger than the other, and it's absolutely clear which side the AI is on

Because memorizing is boring, academic literary thought is almost entirely autocoprophagic and has been for a while, and poetry that doesn't work when spoken in your own dialect doesn't really matter most of the time.

I vibecoded my own stuff for the xteink4 (non-pro), first parsing ESV and LES (LXX), to produce cut sized epubs. the custom firmware has a verse finder. And, of course, I have a custom sleep screen but that's built into basic crosspoint reader (it's called that but it has nothing to do with the Bible innately). I have a spare xteink4, in the other color, ordered, so I can keep one charged up and ready for church at all times. The other I can carry with me.

You can memorize songs using music, too. It requires a certain amount of passion, I think, to succeed. For now. that is, in the genning.

Once you put it to music, which you should, then you're ready to do the wikihow method. Some guy put it there, it's easy to do, that's why I like it. You chop the thing up into repeatable sizes. Like you can repeat that size, but imo it should be a bit not quite a stretch but close. Each person is different, so for some people it might be like 5 words, for others it's 25, it's irrelevant, because that's just your aural loop and not your real memory system.

so you chop it up, usually you have it physically in front of you, and you mark it up with slash lines. Then, the way you do it is you first go chunk by chunk. these are called chunks btw.

so like

AABBCCDDEEFF...

where each letter is a chunk. you LOOK with EYES at the PAGE. ideally you have someone else read it simultanously with you, so you hear and see and SAY OUT LOUD. so this is all together, the first A.

Then you look away, or cover it with a big black sheet of cardstock etc, totally cover it, and OUT LOUD say A. this then completes AA.

You do it again for the rest, ...BBCCDDEE...

then you just start chaining. ABAB (meaning you eyesread+listen+sayaloud A and B immediately - then cover, look away, solo recite ALOUD). then CDCDEFEFGHGH...

then ABCABCDEFDEFGHIGHI...
then ABCDABCDEFGHEFGHIJKLIJKL...
then ABCDEABCDEFGHIJFGHIJ...
five is usually enough, you can do more. obviously you can do a rolling window pattern

BUT! this system is kind of genius because you just need a photocopy in front of you, a pencil, and it's easy to keep track of it this way! And you can just use a cassette tape for your hearing at the same time thing, using the pause button. cassette recorders are cheap as dirty rn and are perfect for non-production single use zero distractions.

But that's not all!

You should be assembling a place-based story to accompany the sequence. I recommend either a box or a circle, the center being symbolic of the main idea. how detailed your visualization mnemonics is depends on you, but you should definitely do this.
>>

Finished my draft 1.5 where I had to completely rewrite the last 3 or so chapters. 220 pages, 71k words, I already know I will have to add 1-2 more chapters in the middle and cut down the beginning (first 30 pages or so).
It's historical fiction, family saga taking place on eurasian stepp, I have been posting excerpts here sometimes, although almost never get any feedback. And again this time, the thread is almost over.
Here are the last 2 and half pages. One short final chapter and epilogue translated into english.
After a massacre, that ended bloodfeud that lasted 16 years, mother and son meet in remains of the massacred, then their horde leaves. I found it very emotional myself, doubt a reader without context will do so. One of the characters is nonverbal at this point of the story btw (dont get confused by it), she replies with "Mm" at most (again something that reader with context knows).
Translated without AI, using online translators for the broad strokes and then editing it as always, it's as close to the original as I one can get, though english has many limitations that I hate (no conjugations for example).

I'd honestly cut everything before
>We have been walking since dawn.
It's a more intriguing and clear introduction to the scene. The detail of where they're walking can come after we care about the fact that they're walking, and after we intuit that it's important for how arduous it is.
Revealing the village at the start kills the intrigue and stakes, how can the plain feel endless when their destination is already within smelling range? How can we suffer alongside them when we meet the destination before we meet them?
Trap us in the desert with them and make us wonder, for even just a little while, if there even is a destination.

I like the foreground/background interaction and the way the characters use props. Still, the scene is probably slightly too long.

In this era of matriarchal chick-lit if you write a female MC it automatically makes you an irrelevant faggot.
>>
>>25457108
This a joke? It's nothing like Hemingway. In fact you should read Hemignway to understand how to write better. I don't want to sound rude , I am sure (I hope) there is some intent behind the words you have chosen, but it still is unbearable to read, becouse it sounds like someone trying to sound clever, instead of being clever.
>studied literature, allegedly.
Sounds about right. Again, I am sorry, but this reads like when students submit the first draft of their bachelor's thesis and think that 'big words' = profound.

Read Hemingway.
>>
>>25457195
I said someone else compared it to Hemingway just meaning that the beats were utilitarian and minimalistic, which they are
>>
>>25457220
>utilitarian and minimalistic
You don't know what those words mean then. The story you posted reads like you are using words that you don't know meaning of. Even then your disorientation isn't as bad as what you subject the reader to.
Read Hemingway.

Female characters are the best though? When done right, not when they are girl bosses. Good character has weaknesses and women are physically weak.

women protags are fucking boring and you are a fag.

Words like what? Daydreams? Thunderbolts? Flammable? It's written for a target audience of teenage males. The only word people wouldn't know is defined explicitly by the narrator

All women think about are which men they want to fuck. They are the least interesting characters by default, and only work to the degree the writer makes her think/act more like a man.

The only concession are the personal insults you hurl at people who laugh at your emotional outburst.
The fact is that some of the best books ever written have female main character - Madame Bovary, Anna Karenina, Nana, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre.

And you have slop male protagonists that want to level up +1 to their sword of Godly Strength.

Take classics and compare them to other classics. Even Scarlet Letter, a generic, had one of the best protagonists and books I've ever read.

I read it

Im sure it makes more sense in context but I got a very rudimentary understanding of the plot or why I should care about what just happened. Child found. A whistful feeling of bittersweet closure. Afterlife as dogs. Relaxing by the fire.

I think I can nitpick a couple things - mentioning the smell of a horse without comment; "the horse smelled like a horse," I dont know if it adds much as is.

Likewise, mentioning "there were even pine cones," why not say "papery cones nestled between the needles" or are they woody cones? Dry needles can be orange. Idk. Usually when I come back to a passage, I find i did things like this- details in the wrong order, or redundant sentences, etc....

Your writing is decent. Sending thoughts and prayers

I'm trying. I think my story is decent. The prose is meh but serviceable for the genre, though I'm still working on improving it. But the dialog is a problem, and idk what to do. It's natural-ish, but it's pretty much all exposition. I can't figure out how to do the subtext thing.

>I've seen this tip before, but I haven't heard any good conversations yet.
You don't hear good conversations, you interpret good conversations. It's about honing your observational skills.
If the conversation isn't interesting, make it interesting. Decide what the dynamics are, reflect on what nuances made you ascribe these qualities to these people. Ask yourself what each of them want from the conversation and how they're going about getting it.
Even the most boring, stilted, monosyllabic conversation, you can project "Person A just wants to drink their coffee in peace while Person B feels a need to try and fill the awkward silence but is too incompetent to offer anything substantive to talk about."
It'll teach you how to inject those implications into a dialogue without having to rely on the characters outright stating "I just want to drink my coffee in peace," "Well that stinks because the silence is making me uncomfortable."
