Hello anons. This painting is called "The Lantern Bearers" by Maxfield Parrish. Please enjoy.

I would like to write about growing up profoundly ugly, but at the same time I know it will only appeal to A: melodramatic teens, or B: the very small minority of actually ugly people.

>tfw good-looking but uglified myself in middle school and early high school with an awful hair style so I know what it feels to be on both sides
That's the sacrifice needed to become a great artist today, living the entire spectrum of experience.

Just repost it in its entirety, anon.

Build a decent narrative around it or at least explore ugliness in an original way. The problem you presented will only exist if you offer nothing other than relatability.

Alright, then. Didn't want to feel spammy.

Hi, anons. A few weeks ago I had a very productive discussion with a few other posters in this thread that led to the idea of creating a kind of book club general. I had promised to get it started, but I had some other things to take care of so I ghosted for a while.

For those who didn't follow the discussion, the idea was to create a general where we can discover and discuss books outside of the same old stuff that is regurgitated on /lit/ and other online literary spaces. Anons will give their suggestions, we'll make a draw to narrow them down if they're plenty, and then we'll vote which one we start with. That's just the initial format, I don't mind it if we organically move into some other method. Overall, the basic rules would be:
>no doorstoppers
>books should be fairly accessible (possible to find online, written in English or with available translations, stuff like that)
And more importantly
>no classics, no school syllabus, no books that you'd find on /lit/ and Reddit charts, no meme books, and no topics that are already covered by generals on the board (such as sci-fi)
You get the idea.

I'll be trip and namefagging for the first few threads just to make sure things run smoothly, but I expect the general to start running on its own if it gains traction. Before I make the starting thread, I'd like to know if anyone has any last minute suggestions for the general.

And a name would be good too.
>>
You are trying to get lit. I am trying to get /lit/. We are (not) the same.
>>
>>25484681
It's a neat idea but every book I can think of that'd be fun to talk about is some sort of classic or hard to find online. Maybe I'm just pretentious.

I do want to find some friends to talk about books and writing with but I can't stand the kind of people who tend to populate discord servers related to literature and I'm not normal or patient enough to go to an irl bookclub.
>>
>>25484687
>>25484681
You should just make a separate thread for this. To be blunt, this is where people come to escape talking about books. Hell, some people here don't even read (which I don't understand, why are they on /lit/, but w/e)!

Book clubs have been tried many, many times before. I wish you luck on success.

Thus end my two years of being a crypto chud; my two years of being friends with progressive lefitsts, going to uni parties, enduring talks about how awesome abortions are, visiting an atrociously bad LGBT theater play, seeing a grown man have a breakdown because someone said the nigger-word, meeting no girls other than tattooed, pierced, all black wearing alt-chicks with a body count in the high double digits, seeing adults be scared of singing along with rap songs like they're fundamentalists fearing God's wrath for taking the Lord's name in vein; it's all over now.
My conclusion: leftists are insane, infantile, and insufferable. Anyone says "but they have the heart in the right place!" is an absolute fool, whom I can guarantee has never spent a prolonged amount of time with people like that. They don't actually love brown people— they just hate Whites. None of them know even a single precious person of color— despite worshiping them. The struggle of the poor? They couldn't care about less either; for two years I've never seen them once complain about the government cutting benefits for families, or how bad the inflation had gotten. They're some of the most hateful people I've ever met, with the most un-diverse set of political opinions I've ever seen. Anyone who's not a "good person™" is the enemy and deserves to be treated like a traitor to the human race. They're all clones of each other, and they're all fully detached from reality, which I attribute to them being completely ignorant about history. They ALL subscribe to the ideology of communism, without knowing a single thing about it— the average latinx neo-nazi knows has a deeper understanding of his ideology than these people.
I don't regret my time spent among these reality removed, pseudo-communist fools —I do wish the best to all of them except for one—but this has been enough. Chud out.

>>25484887
the funny thing about the Marxists I know at university is that very few of them have actually read or understood Marx (and if they're pretending to stupid then they deserve to be treated as such).

They are literally just rich spoiled kids roleplaying as leftists, appointing themselves as leaders and experts, and hypocritically projecting their own faults on to everyone else. a bunch of reprehensible faggots if ever I saw one.

Both correct. There are obvious parallels to what you see with the online right, but I think it goes further than muh both sides bad. More like a general incapacity for modern man to really believe in something. Like how religion now is essentially a LARP for the vast majority of people and you would be hard-pressed to find someone who convincingly *believes* this stuff the way you read about the historical accounts of people who live and die by their faith. Now we have little, concentrated cycles of faith that gurgle up from the bowels of the VC class and manifest as the likes of mass AI obsession, withering away within a matter of years once the promised revolution of life (and the economy) doesn’t come to fruition. Maybe we replaced faith with FOMO? I don’t know, just “thinking out loud,” so to speak. I’m certainly no Christcuck who wants to map all the social faultlines in the world back to some bible verses but this sense I have that belief in general is so ephemeral, nebulous, feels related somehow in a way that I’m failing to articulate.

Sometimes I think I've born for failure. Never achieved anything, never had a girlfriend, my friends went away, life kept me behind plus I am unemployed. NTA but getting a job made my mental health worse. All the negative thoughts and emotions I feel are still present while being more powerful than before, albeit focused on external targets rather than myself. I no longer have as much time for the things that truly bring me happiness in life, trading that free time for money-earning drudgery. Aside from my financial situation, everything in my life is worse off than when I was NEET. The only other improvement might be that I learned I actually dislike a lot of other people more than I hate myself

godard’s editing and narrative ideas get all the splash but he also had a way of capturing intimate scenes that, thanks to a rarer kind of genius, succeed in pretending that they are taken from real life. like the bedroom scene in breathless.
>>
>>25485357
godard sucks man the only movie of his i legit enjoyed was la chinoise the rest are "ok" like maybe there were ground breaking when they came out but they just seem like mid noir to me.
>>
>>25485362
he’s like the first one you find so you sort of get over him. but then you come back around and yeah i still like him. better than truffaut and 10x better than any left bank french director. ‘mid noir’ sounds like (and i hate this expression) you didn’t get it.
>>
An Ancient Aztez Deathdog Whistle
>>
>>25485369
>u didn't get it
i guess not. breathless is supposed to be this groundbreaking thing, and maybe it has some significance in the history of film techniques or something, but as a narrative it's just a mid noir, sorry.

>>25485380
fromsoft stuff is like a bad nes game from 1985 but with unreal engine graphics
>>
>>25485377
yeah i guess not. i don’t really care if something is groundbreaking, what the left bank were doing was far more experimental, but obviously it came almost twenty years after film noir and from across an ocean, godard loved bogie etc but it was just impossible for a director like him to make actual noir. it’s something else. it’s like calling the stuff that came out of tokyo in the 90s ‘mid gangster films’.
>>
>>25485384
ok since u apparently "get it", what's so great about breathless? he attached a camera to a car so they could be filmed while driving? just seems like a technological gimmick to me.
>>
omg i love reading and watching bond market doomerism rn but as we all know nothing ever happens

>>25485388
orson welles said a film is never really good unless the camera is an eye in the head of a poet.

since we on film or whatever, i'm watching a skatevideo that's filmed in 4k 60fps, it looks so crisp and clear, yet, they used a fucking fish eye so even tho the resolution is so clean it still doesn't give u the feeling of actually being there because everything is distorted, not to mention he's filming close to the sidewalk. ok, i get in a skatevideo u wanna see the guy's board primarily, but when it looks so fucking real, you want to just be able to see it like you were standing there, not like you are an ant on the sidewalk. causing a lot of weird dissonance, i don't like it.
>>
there should be a /lit/ board for people under 36

I'm so conceited. the flip side of that is young people don't know any different than the current sloppy hell world so they think it's fine and correct. also young people fall for stuff old people already saw like the ai bubble. we all lived through dotcom and gfc bubble/crash and know what comes next. when your whole adult life is like five years, you're not going to make well informed decisions.

Yeah, because they're literally industrial engineers who shifted into gaming. The Souls series is so vacant like that because it was made in the approach of an industrial engineering module. They look at gamers as though they are clients and they assume everyone knows how to operate a machine so they just put the guy with a sword in the castle because that's what video games are. Boilerplate product design, which honestly comes with a consummate respect, its like 'here is the video game module you requested, sir, to your specifications' and they do try to be dignified throughout the whole product

I'm thinking about the time my friend in the past sent me this Steely Dan album, at the time i checked it out but i dont think i liked it and forgot about it. I just checked it again and these are the lyrics it starts off with.
Yes, I smoked weed at the time. I didnt smoke that much, maybe once a week. I had no idea he felt this way. Or am i reading too much into it? Cause back in the day i would just send to friends a song that i liked a lot at the moment, but now i know people send songs with hidden or not-so-hidden literal meanings to a person they send it to, which can be seen in the lyrics. The actual song is about a girlfriend, we were two male friends. no homo i guess? I didn't know it bothered him that much that i smoke weed. Didn't know he was thinking of ending the friendship because of it, even back then.
Anyway, he got super into catholicism, it ended up being the only thing that he would talk about basically. Then he found a catholic girl, but she broke up with him. That's when he really started showing signs of distancing from me, even though at the time i stopped smoking weed and even drinking. He started missing calls, he even missed some of the meetings for hangout without even informing me beforehand. He started drinking.
I dont know, it seems to me that for the last year or so he was very passive aggressive to me, always showing how he doesn't care about me, always acting uppity or like he's better than me. I guess i flipped out once or twice, i remember i called him glownigger once. But he called me weird before that. I reacted, i never bully if i haven't been provoked.
The truly bizzare thing, the thing that made him ghost me was when he called me on the phone asking to hang out with him and another guy, both hardcore catholics, but that other guy is a whole different story i will probably write about here once. Guy is an ex dealer, ex fuckboy turned catholic. He's the alpha male of the group. I started disliking him so anyway i declined the invitation. And that's it, because of that he ghosted me. It's crazy that those social dynamics that manosphere talks about truly exist, because if you're in a friend group there is an alpha and basically everything has to be subordinated to him. And if you reject the alpha immediately the whole group rejects you. Like they are cattle without a brain of their own.
>>
I figured out how it all works now and I want to be in the screen writing it and getting paid a ton of money and earning the status of success and the sense of fulfillment for a life long coming and earning the life of acting like they act on my absolute favorite most personal works that remind me of myself with the addition of being fulfilled and successful and being the loved by me on the screen while being the person in it

Yup. Skipping the planned banter, your case is already terminal. You may be able to find the regulars around these sorts of places elsewhere, but never in this form. Anonymity (or at least implied anonymity) is valuable, which is why the narrative around here is necessarily that we're a bunch of craven undesirables. Paradoxically, some people use that as a filter, and there are a wide variety of uniquely intelligent people who post here.
>>
>>25485555
hard disagree. there’s one or two clever people here (including me).
>>
>>25485553
Oh yeah people take different paths, that's the kind of behavior you can expect from someone who is transforming into a catholic and is drawing lines. It doesn't mean you're a disgusting weedhead, but it does mean he's practicing (like a student practices) the new set of rules this so-austere-it-needs-no-magic organization asks of its members. So yeah now he gets to wander around coping with chronic sober irritation and cope with it by telling everyone (again) he used to know a bunch of losers who weren't Catholic who 'wasted their life' no matter what you do because he hasn't kept in touch and prefers to imagine it that way (but the point of telling the story is that he is a cool guy who has and is capable of running with drug users)

And I am a catholic, i believe in God. If anything he's the one who drinks but that's not even the point, you missed the point of my post completely. I wonder if women truly know the extent of the power of displaying her legs. Like, when they put on shorts before going out, is it as simple as "oh that looks good" or is it a deeper understanding, that it not only looks good but will draw the eyes, blood, and desire of every man she comes across? I can see wanting that power over one person, say, the person you're going on a date with or dating, but over everyone? Surely ignorance is the only explanation for such licentious behavior.

Uglyness is more than just hair. A misshapen skull, sunken eyes, skewed jaw etc, in other words, having an objectively unaesthetic face. There is something unnatural about it, almost like an unintentional affront to the divine.

>>25484684
>The problem you presented will only exist if you offer nothing other than relatability.
That's just it though, is there a way to write with any originality on the topic of uglyness? Every author who's made the attempt in the past have always focused on the moral implications of uglyness. Is there any other angle to enter the subject from?

Its basically a story about a gothic victorian man and woman in the style of beauty in the beast who have been together a long terrible time and have never loved eachother, and she is screaming at him attacking him with sick deeply-life destroying shit she did to him (like Michael's wife in Godfather II) and he fucking snaps and takes on a still human bestial form and brutality and attempts to kill her, but she's no victim so she takes on an almost panther-like aggression and tries to kill him, and both have them have completely severed whatever the opposite sex could have meant to them and basically take on a two-person animal long tribal war for territory within the house because they're both too tough and smart to be killed by the other. Every sense of the house devolves into animal madness as they do, drapes and doorways tatter to rainforest jungle leaves as southern american predator cats and birds of prey spawn in the rainforest of her hunting ground her domain. Desk frieze and buttress turned to dark crag of the lion's cave lair, he plotting alone paranoid in might form absolutely seething, whole environments compete. The whole mansion is now the host to uncounted and competing intoxicating miasmas, fungus, and molds. No memories of some beautiful wedding, no time we ever loved eachother, no desiring eachother behind closed doors, no crying in arms, no hands in laps, no mother, no children. Father is there, the dark consultant and master to him

actually i'm evisaging a completely free as well as completely just society right now. and it functions perfectly. all thanks to the institution housed in a large blue dome far out in the forest. for the institution monitors the whole situation. they wear robes and monitor the whole thing. and when anything unjust threatens to befall they arrive borne by a silver floating craft and with holographic diagrams and astonishing perspicuity explain why the just course is the best. and so compelling is their demonstration that every would-be malefactor immediately desists and repents and it doesn't even feel like they were pressured, it feels like they were merely aided in discovering the light of their own inborn reason. and they smoke weed at the institution, when they're not working of course, they have a swimming pool there and big metallic sculptures. really it's very cool, you have to see it with your own eyes.

would have been nice to know! I did go back and look at a few that caught my eye, particularly allusions from other great writers and poems (eg Wordsworth, Shakespeare, TS Eliot).

Anyway, I finished Steinbeck's The Winter of our Discontent. Loved it! Highly recommended to all anons here, particularly Americans. I checked out a Library of America book that contains three DeLillo novels: The Names, White Noise, and Libra. I've tried reading White Noise before and put it down about halfway through. Maybe my opinions will be different now. Any fans of the other two novels, The Names and Libra? They also had Zero K but I decided to go with this earlier selection instead.

Why choose freedom over justice? In a perfectly just world, you should be free to pursue just things, and you should have no reason to pursue unjust things.

Hence the need to balance the demands of society. To what degree, that is the purpose of politics. And now you understand how the world works.

Ah yes, perfect. We're good at that.

Once again I find myself contemplating becoming an alcoholic. Problem is I don't live alone and am a homebody so I would get caught immediately.

I used to go to this bar
back when I didn’t have a car
'Cause it was close to my apartment
so that was just as far as I went
There’s nothing special about the place, nothing too hard to recreate
Just pour some old beer on the carpet
and make it close to my apartment

What if I don’t have to compromise at all?

you misunderstand me, I'm not concerned with hewing to leftist principles -- I'm saying that if you want a world that is always just in every instance, the only way to do that is to severely restrict what can and cannot be done and keep everyone in line with the constant threat of overwhelming brutal violence
>write it so it doesn't imply more control always creates more justice
this is not implied by what I said

The dumb fuck champagne socialist commie.

Your ideas are stupid, your conditions are unacceptable, I fundamentally find you repulsive. I will not partake in your dinner. I will not compromise.

You don’t tell me how to process information, or what is morally acceptable or permissible, or how I should feel about things.

And when push ever came to shove, I would opt to simply kill you if the option were feasible. If you had a hostage, I would simply shoot through them. Good day, sir.
