After reading W. H. Auden’s essay on reading, I came to the conclusion that literature hobbyists have lower quality standards due to (among other things) the inherent abstract nature of the medium. For example, when a person engages with music, paintings or films, there’s a sensorial interaction with them, whether it’s visual, auditory or both. But when it comes to reading novels, short stories, etc., the lack of physical interaction forces the reader to rely on their imagination and abstract thinking. This way, a simple phrase like “he was walking through the forest”, in the mind of the reader, can become either a simple picture of a man walking through a forest or a cinematic scene pulled from a period drama directed by Julian Fellowes. In this sense, a reader can go as far as hallucinate a complete different work from the one in the book and live with the illusion that they read something good. Idk, I feel that this idea could use more polish but it would certainly explain why people like slop by Sanderson or DFW or why people often say that the book was better than the movie adaptation when that’s rarely the case.

I wonder how many writers weren't able to make money off of writing because of 1) lack of talent/studying 2) lack of originality 3) lack of business sense and 4) lack of common sense.I am asking this because I wonder about me (or at least, an idealized version of myself), who hits all four of these.
