How do you write a protagonist that actively goes against the genre?
I'm writing YA dark academia except the protagonist is more like Huckleberry Finn than Richard Papen, and the core tension is how he navigates the school despite being unquestionably ill-suited in everyway possible (they're too young, they have zero liberal arts education, they're impulsive, they're not even rich anymore). I enjoy writing it, but I can't help but think I am somewhat misleading the reader by doing this.

Misdirection is a common literary technique. Just be sure you know the genre well enough before subverting its readers' expectations.

I finished one story and decided that I needed to take a break from it before starting draft 2. In that time, I've now finished another story, so I need to take a break from that to start draft 2. What a life

Dude same. I take breaks from my current project by just... Working on a different one in a completely different genre with a different tone. Idk why but I've had very little interest in anything else since I've started writing.
>>
Decided I'll attempt one more draft of my screenplay this week... Going to rewrite act 1, hopefully it works...

Why does he still keep coming here?

It’s the dead of winter, way long after peak season. I still get some visitors from time to time, that isn’t new. I get visitors of all kinds: curious kids, obnoxious teens throwing parties, obnoxious college kids who throw even harder parties, and the adults who come with their camera crews to make some “TOP TEN HAUNTED PLACES IN NEBRASKA,” or some shit like that. Everyone trying to get something out of this old ass house– this old ass dead ass house with an old ass dead ass dude who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Except for that one guy.

He started coming here every day since December. Cold as hell so naturally he’s covered up, but so covered up to the point where I can barely make out anything.. He wore this huge goofy orange coat with an orange scarf and hat that covered basically his whole face– except his eyes. A dark green… Nice color.

Anyways, he would come here and just stand there and look at the house for like ten or fifteen minutes before walking off. And he’d keep coming back again and again and again… I’m used to persistent visitors, but coming back day by day for months now? What was his deal?

Really the real question is what was the deal with that outfit.

I can’t leave the house, if I could I’d be making everyone’s lives a living hell. What the fun in being a ghost if you can’t fuck with people? For now I’m just a dead shut-in who’s rotting away even faster than my actual body rotting six feet under.

As freaky as human Garfield was though, seeing those orange clothes brighten up the dead of winter helped.

Eternity sucks, but it sucks a little less when you know someone out there cares about you.

Also the whole screenplay, though if you haven't read it already maybe you'd prefer to wait for the next draft

You're allowed to tell if you're writing the interstitial parts between scenes. The term for this is "scene vs. sequel"; you can look it up.
>>

Oh yeah I remember that logline. I shan't be reading more, that premise is weak and one-dimensional, I don't see anyone spinning it into an worthwhile film. I reccomend either breaking this idea apart and twisting it into something barely recognizable or just doing something completely different.

Show don't tell is practical screenwriting advice which really means don't waste space on anything the camera or microphone can't pick up. Its popularity made trad writers co-opt it, but in that space I think it just means to avoid things like explaining the subtext.

Moon

Flower moon—
Feather moon—
Flesh moon unfolding

Breath—
Like mist
Off the Sea
Of Fertility

Tranquility rains
As stardust
From moonbeams

Dawn awakens
From dreams,
Damp with dew
In the moon-fleece
