>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

Cultivation is the best default but it's also stale since it's what everything uses
So it's the best template but it's certainly not the best system in fiction, maybe unfairly simply because it's done to death
>>
>>25526542
Wrong. Every power system is RPG leveling when you look deep enough.
Qi gathering is level 1-10.
Foundation establishment is levels 11-20.
Golden core is levels 21-30.
Nascent soul is 31-40.
Spirit severing is 41-50
Immortal is 51-60.

Secret realms are dungeons.
Inheritances and legacies are quests with hefty rewards.

Both the RPG and xianxia system can get pretty dull. One is about grinding monsters, the other is about sitting on your ass and taking a copious amount of drugs for a thousand years.

I was being criticized by the prose a fair bit, but it was only when you two elaborated on it (and I decided to look up what Purple Prose actually means lol) that I got some clarity on the situation, thank you. I know exactly what everyone is picking up from my writing and I know what I got to fix for the future. That being said I genuinely don't know how I'm going to begin fixing it lmao. At least I do know what the problem is, though.
Does it mean that I'm better off being more straightforward with the way I narrate things as opposed to trying to coat everything on a veil of emotion and lyric, so to speak? I could do that, but don't I risk the narrative lacking in emotion and being more on-the-nose? Like, I get what everyone means, but I don't quite understand what my alternative is here.
>because you fellas are overdoing this shit way too much
That is oddly reassuring, knowing I'm not the only one making this mistake... I'll also re-read my favorite novel and see how much of it is descriptions and emotions, that sounds like a good place to start.
>>
>>25526458
Cultivation has already been done to death.
Every story should have a unique system. Learning new mechanics is part of the fun.
>>
>>25526965
I'm neither of those posters, but my problem was that your sentences didn't actually parse correctly in English. You got so heavy into pathos language that you lost the meaning of what you were trying to describe.

Your post right there is perfectly legible. Why not just write in that style? Just tell me what was happening in that same matter of fact tone/style/voice.

Trying to be more pathos and poetic is great but the bar to do that well and have it be enjoyable to a reader is much much higher than Hemingway-style workman prose. And that's before you get into content and narrative type problems, like an interesting plot setting and characters.
>>
>>25526965
The first thing you should learn is how people actually approach storytelling. Otherwise, you're just gonna spend years stumbling in the dark.

>At least I do know what the problem is
and that's 50% of the solution
every single self-help programme begins with, to paraphrase AA, "hi, I'm anon, and I suck"
>That being said I genuinely don't know how I'm going to begin fixing it lmao
1st, I gave you the exercise in that post 25523588, try it out
>I'll also re-read my favorite novel and see how much of it is descriptions and emotions, that sounds like a good place to start
yep
usually a chapter will do, but I personally have torn down entire novels in my decades of study

2nd step, prose-wise, the next exercise is to write a simple story in simple English. proofread it for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting. start at 1,000 words.
3rdly, read up on act structures. accept nothing that goes under 4 acts. my personal favourite is Freytach

>don't I risk the narrative lacking in emotion and being more on-the-nose?
emotion is as much a product of plot circumstances as it is of melodramatic description, arguably MORE. remember, "sitcom" stands for "situational comedy". the comedy (and drama) arises from their circumstances, not just the wordplay and gags (which is what preceded sitcoms, e.g. patter and slapstick).
first lay out the situation. describe the place, the people, and finally the plot. your job is to first shock the reader, and then describe how the READER is thinking, which either aligns with what the protagonist is thinking, or (advanced twist) does not, so the reader then reacts "oh fugg he's doing the wrong thing now!"
you've been putting the cart before the horse.
>I'm not the only one
hardly
it's the most common mistake of every amateur on /wg/

TL;DR first write a good plot, then focus on your language and wordplay.
and all the above will take you years of consistent study and practice to git gud at.

Speaking as first reader-anon I did get the sense that you weren't picking up what the others were putting down so I went for a purposefully more verbose response.

Most of the time you will not ever get any actual detailed reviews/critiques on your writing from randos on the internet, so you're going to have to train the skill of actually interpreting what a random short comment might be trying to convey even though most of the time they're only (hopefully) touching on a small part of a problem. Writer-anon seems to keep spitting out some good advice here >>25527168

>don't I risk the narrative lacking in emotion and being more on-the-nose?
You'd probably be surprised on how "simple" you can make default story telling without it becoming too on-the-nose or actually read as that "simple"/bad. Do the first/random chapter analysis writer-anon mentioned on one or a couple of stories. I'd recommend also doing an analysis on an decent quality english WN to get an idea/example from "amateur" writers on simpler "default" writing and how they enhance it in moderation here and there with characterization, tone or vibrancy. You do not want any one of these to become too overbearing or readers get fed up.

Harems are perfect for long WNs. No harem stories can only play the romance card once. This means that either the romance gets stretched out and becomes underwhelming or it gets resolved and unavailable for the rest of the story. In the latter case "beautiful women" will never be relevant in the rest of the story. Ie there won't be seduction or temptation or anything sweet either.

Harems side step these problems by allowing the author to just do the whole romance cycle again with another girl.

Planning to finally post a web novel in the near future. My stories have NSFW content, but it's usually only 5-15% of the chapters. I'd rather not use Royal Road, because their guidelines seem too strict. Is Scribblehub the next best site for stories with NSFW content, or is it more suited for heavily erotic works?

I started reading Aura Overload and it made me think that if scifi ever becomes meta or RR it will be due variations on cyberpunk specifically. Not anything like Heinlein or The Expanse or whatever. The more I write my own story the more structural similarities I find to generic fantasy stories and tropes, obviously it works great with litrpg, and it's really easy to mix in stuff from other genres: Cyberpunk x fantasy, cyberpunk x wuxia, cyberpunk x lovecraft, and so on. I think there might be an explosion of creativity in the genre in the near future. Exciting.

Cyberpunk is a setting and not a genre. It's a setting that some people like, but a lot of people dislike.
It's also much harder to write than other settings, because you have modern technology - instant communication, huge populations, computer/internet use. One of the things that makes fantasy so attractive is the lack of those technologies. (Just to be clear: it's not about cellphones, but rather about ubiquitous instant communication.) It's much easier to write a believable struggle in fantasy that relies on the hero's strength and cunning than in a modern-ish environment.

Totally agree, hence "IF scifi ever...". I think fantasy will remain more popular.

But I think those issues are less onerous with cyberpunk than for something like space opera as a dense culturally heterogenous corrupt city will have independent neighborhoods, monstrous reclusive murderers that have augmented themselves into beasts, and analogs to dungeons. The end of Phantom Liberty is almost like a dungeon run. The lack of centralization is what does it i think.

>>
>>25529221
one of the main themes of cyberpunk is centralization. everyone everywhere lives under the thumb of the corpos. that's how you get absurd things like meat being illegal (so that you have to buy their synthetic meat substitute), which would be impossible if the entire world wasn't hypercentralized (or divided into a few hypercentralized blocs).
lack of centralization is one of the themes of *fantasy*. fantasy being inspired by western europe post fall of rome.

You have entirely the wrong mindset for popular writing, and in fact writing in general. If you want to write for yourself, to self-express, go away. You have an audience of zero to one. (I don't know if you honestly would even read the tripe you put to paper.)

As a popular writer you are an entertainer. You are there to GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT. You are not there to get paid, make money, get lots of sales, accumulate fame, be popular in your own person, make friends, find a gf, discover the secrets of immortality, NONE OF THAT; you are there to entertain people.

You need a servant mindset. Reading is EXPENSIVE. It costs time, mental attention, focus, energy, and if you're selling your writing, it costs money (which is a derivative of everything else I just mentioned and more). Even if you put it up for FREE, it costs something for readers to read it. So it has to be worth it TO THEM. The effort YOU put into writing it literally does not matter EXCEPT INSOFAR AS that effort makes the text better and more entertaining.

Stop complaining that readers want more of what they've found they liked. Stop complaining about genres and tropes and readerbases organizing themselves by genre. Instead, why don't you try writing something entertaining that will please people when they read it? You ever consider that? Think maybe that making other people happy could be a valid goal and use of your time?

There's a deeper truth to this: the self-expression is going to happen even if your goal is 100% to please readers. It's inevitable and unavoidable by the nature of what writing is. Your essence and interests will make it onto the page in hundreds of subtle ways as the narrative is constructed chapter by chapter, paragraph by paragraph, sentence by sentence, even in small word choices. But if you put the cart before the horse you're not going anywhere and people will point and laugh at you for being retarded.

Jamming barely even works any more, especially in urban environments. Fiber optic cable is so cheap it can be one time use now. Once a city is cobwebbed in old fiber optic cable that's 99% degraded it's really hard to cut the remaining 1% carrying data to localized transmitters and receivers.

My bigger problem with cyberpunk is that the age of tinkers in their garages inventing Apple computers is dead and long gone. Everything now is hyper centralized at the component manufacturing level and everyone is hyper aware of it because of news about east asia and gaming computer hardware prices. So how would America even have cyberpunk? We're more likely to fall straight back into WW2, no scratch that, because the government would have the power to easily track HAM radios. We'd fall back to like civil war era militias, or something like a middle east style insurgency.

All that to say that cyberpunk makes sense in the 80s and 90s reflecting on the humble origins of personal computing in the 60s and 70s. It makes much less sense now in the 2020s after LLMs and mass surveillance have become ubiquitous. Omniscient gods and demons make more sense, and barbarians that come in with a massive axe and smash the rituals fueling said gods and demons and liberating the people from comfortable slavery to thrust them into impoverished "freedom," those kinds of themes and dreams make sense, I think.

Funny joke but look closely: I never even said the people know what they want. Who could have predicted the rise of Monster Girl Evolution, My New Life as a Max Level Archmage, or Gifted?

Hence even when one is focused on providing entertainment, there is plenty of room for creativity and trying new things. Genres and tropes are the surface level, sitting atop deeper themes that get to the heart of literature as an artform. Identity, growth, progression, alienation, having an uncomfortably hot mom; all of these are part of the human condition and can be explored in entertaining ways.
>>
>>25529084
every system works like this including real life
>>
>>25529257
>So how would America even have cyberpunk?
Yeah, it would never. To me cyberpunk is now essentially a kind of alternate history (I take this to an extreme in my setting and diverge much earlier than the 80s) where the world maintained the tinkerer ethos and the decentralized structure of the internet won out. The unreality is to me part of the appeal: Real life is so depressing that I don't think there will be a market for realistic scifi anytime soon. Realism for us converges to either posthuman misery porn or intuitively-absurd utopias too quickly.

There's also a spectrum between full on butlerian jihad and "the culture" style AI worship that I think is fertile. In one setting I used to work on the government has receded into a netwatch-like organization that fights the tattered remains of other governments and abducts/eliminates independent actors (especially AI) that get too powerful, and of course monitors and regulates nukes etc, but otherwise doesn't give a shit about their nominal citizens.
>But it would be trivial for them to totalitarianize everyone
Irl yes but I had a web of competing interests from necessary independent megacorps and a few economically entrenched AIs that turned my neo-america into an ecosystem rather than a reich.
>>
A setting that should make a comeback is the 90s-2000s era magitek setting, like in Final Fantasy 8.
The everything-in-the-kitchen-sink approach to worldbuilding makes it more fun, especially when there are multiple magic systems existing side by side and the MC keeps losing access to one, so he has to keep rebuilding himself from scratch with another system.
Maybe the MC starts out having to learn to wield mana. Then, at the end of Book 1, he uncovers his secret origin of being a bioengineered superhuman, so he now needs to learn to control his OP inner powers. But then, plot twist, a parasitic soul that had been acting as his magical old man successfully takes over his body and ejects him into a much weaker clone, so now he must work his way up using some kind of nanotech system, and so on.
You know, just balls-to-the-wall, insane, edgy-13-year-old rambling. It'd be fun.

>>
>>25530316
They are, no one reads 99.9% of ai spam (look at recent updates if you want proof) and the relatively low ratings show that people don't like it. But nepotism and gaming the RS algo means that low effort slop from retarded sociopaths crowds out stories that had actual work put into them.

Enshittification in real time.
>>
>>25530321
i haven't investigated myself but the servers I'm in are really negative toward AI
have you clicked into the ai stories and made sure they're actually doing the shoutout spam garbage?
i kinda figured people are just retards and like ai writing
>>
>>25530325
Mostly yes, iirc I think basically everything in the top 7 is stuffed with shout outs but I could be remembering wrong. It seems to be the primary way to get people to read your shit, so getting eyeballs on royal road now is a function of how much you're willing to be a grifting nepopiggy.
>i kinda figured people are just retards and like ai writing
All but one has much lower ratings than everything else on RS so many don't seem to. I worry that as time goes on and even the retarded people start getting unconsciously annoyed by everything they read feeling the same they'll just stop using the site entirely and it'll all collapse.
>>
>>25530306
>>25530325
What's happening is the ai sloppers can out compete regular writers when it comes to putting out a lot of chapters which is the key to getting on RS. You need 20k words to even qualify and if you can drop a lot of chapters day 1 and continue to drop more every day you can pretty much guarantee getting on. RR gets millions of site visits every month, even if we assume a bunch of that is bots or scrapers it only requires a tiny % of that following a story to get on RS.
Swaps can help but swaps are useless if you swap with someone who either doesn't already have followers or wasn't gaining them.
>>
>>25530339
It's infuriating. AI stories are so far uniformly dogshit, especially past the first chapter, I could literally make better ones myself and tuned to my preferences rather than those of Pooja from mumbai.

I don't understand why using AI without flagging it doesn't automatically get you penalized or something. I'm not even a writer so this isn't sour grapes.

It is. The premise is basically a standard sysapoc except everything runs on ghosts. Awakened people are called Haunters and they use Ghost powered apps on people's phones called Hauntware to fight. The system is called B.A.N.S.H.E.E.(Bound Apparition Network System for Haunted Electronical Equipment)

The tier was meant for the haunters, not the ghost themselves so I think the mix between the different types of undead is fine, idk. I can never get enough of the comedy that is RR forums. There's a guy complaining that nobody leaves comments on stories. To prove his point, he brags about having 10,000 total views and 10 followers after 1 year of posting his story, so he therefore isn't a small author and should have more engagement. In his mind, those 10 followers represent every reader out there.

I admire their optimism sometimes. Imagine if these people came here, only to be told anything less than 5k followers within 3 months is a failure.

There's an understanding even in the genre fiction author crowd, the creative writing class types, that an author needs to write five bad novels first, THEN they have a shot at writing something good. It's like a tube of toothpaste and the five bad novels are in the way. In webnovel terms maybe that's 200k words of a story that's objectively bad to mid, then you start to understand what goes into a good novel and what's crippling to a narrative.

In cooking terms it's fucking up the recipe a few times until you get it.
In lifting terms it's starting with baby weight and getting form right before you go trying to set impressive PRs.

>back to 5k followers in 3 months
https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/169064/arcane-zoologist-the-dragons-chosen-progfan-magic/chapter/3947523/epilogue
(see the endnote)
Popular monster girl evolution / LitRPG author started a new story, I think it hit RS and had big shoutout swaps, but it settled out at 13XX followers. The author is unsure if she's going to continue the story, which I personally really like and would like to see continue, since it's a slow start and I can see it escalating (she has a good track record for this), BUT commercially? Yeah, it's not successful enough to be worth her time growing slowly compared to starting something new that might pop off right out the gate. (For reference her other story, The Magpie and the Archmage has over 6k followers, over 10k average views).

And now I check her patreon and yes she started something new, more in line with current trends (Arcane Zoologist was swimming against the current in terms of trends in the RR space).

That's not to say that Arcane Zoologist has no VALUE. I love it. But as an author one only has so much time and energy to produce a work, and when you're GOOD that time is even more valuable because you CAN write something of value whether or not it's popular. So then one has to optimize for what they value. Is it the small, cute story nobody's interested in? Or do you write something popular that puts money in the patreon account? It's all relative to what the author values in the moment.

Relativity. If Stephen King wrote a book that only sold 30k physical copies in the first week he'd feel like shit.

>>25531231
For me I have an entire ritual. Wake up, shower, sit down, reread yesterday's chapter, crack open an energy drink, put on some music, and write for as long as it takes. I'm in the middle of that now, actually, planning out where today's chapter is going.
>peaceful environment
>caffeine, typically 200-600mg
>minimal anxiety and time pressure
>understanding of where I'm going with the story
The routine of it is more important than any particular part of the routine. The ability to sit still and write words for a long period of time (longer than say 20 minutes) is a skill, and it grows like a muscle.

>>25531239
>i blame the smartphone, honestly
I keep mine on silent and tucked away while I write. But when I do get a call (rare but it happens) it DOES fuck up my routine. It's distracting.
A big part of being able to do heavy mental work is creating a distraction-free environment. I have a friend who is simply incapable of pursuing his goals because he lives with his aging parents and refuses to isolate himself from distractions.

Studies show that even having the phone in sight can be a distraction, so if that's a problem for anyone, try putting it on silent and putting it in another room entirely.

Do you guys think that authors like this ever consider just how limiting such a premise is? It seems like a good idea at first, but soon enough all the "look at how quirky and unique this is" runs its course and either it turns into a regular fantasy story or the readers get bored. Either way the premise will end up holding this story back.

It's a popular premise because it's formulaic
>MC desires a steady-state cozy lifestyle
>his past means everyone wants him to adventure instead
>he gets to sit somewhere stationary and adventure comes to him to resolve
>rinse and repeat ad infinitum

I'd say the problem with that particular set up isn't that it's limiting, it's that there's very little to distinguish it from other OPMC retirement stories. Maybe the regressor aspect, but if that's the story I'm thinking of, the MC is like bound by fate to both join the hero's party AND be the BBEG for the hero. So he's getting pulled into adventure by both the good and evil sides.

The strength of such stories is in the characters and their development. And there's always an off-ramp from the premise, too. The MC could just change his mind and answer the call to adventure, with the hopes of returning home once it's all resolved. And then you can rinse and repeat THAT story arc, too.

Banished from the Hero's Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside is my favorite in the subgenre, although I'm behind on the LN volumes.

NTA but I completely understand what that anon is talking about. Some people react differently to caffeine than the "wired and anxious" default, and have a massive tolerance for it. You guessed it, it's ADHDers who have been self-medicating with caffeine for a long ass time and never realized it.
>>
>>25531340
I don't think it matters whether you can distinguish the story, because the story itself becomes boring. There's only so many times that "haha, I'm retired and don't need to deal with this" works before the readers get bored.

These stories frequently get dropped by the author because they will start bleeding readers by "book" 2-3. Even Beware of Chicken became more and more boring the further along you went.

You guys are dumb it's not a scam like webnovel.com. You need to give them publishing rights in order for it to become a book. They get dibs if theres a sequel and the rights eventually revert to you. It's no different than tradpub, because it is tradpub.
>>
>>25531452
>Even Beware of Chicken became more and more boring the further along you went.
it sounds like the story premise is just something you don't like, not inherently bad, because BOC has a massive fanbase that reads it actively to this day
seems very silly to say "the premise kills the story" after naming one of the biggest web serials on the internet that does the premise and remains extremely healthy after like 8 books of content

it's pretty adjacent to the archmage trend (since supposedly starting at max strength should kill most plots) yet even if MLA dropped half its patreon from the start it's still making 18k a month

not your cup of tea doesn't mean bad story

any kind of mental stimulant alleviates the symptoms, so it's natural that people with the condition would end up relying on caffeine to level out

Caffeine having an association with ADHD is a myth. Different people react differently to caffeine, but it isn't ADHD dependent or even correlated.

You cannot self-medicate ADHD with caffeine because caffeine does not alleviate, and in fact depending on your brand of ADHD can worsen, ADHD symptoms.

This is like saying some people self-medicate for IBS with fucking hot sauce. That's not how that works.

This isn't someone bipolar taking downers when they're manic or uppers when they're depressed.

Is caffeine withdrawal even similar to ADHD for anyone? The only person I've known that definitely had a caffeine addiction just got migraines when she stopped drinking the stuff. She treated diet coke like a diabetic treats fucking insulin. Not having any was a medical emergency.

no, it's not, it's the opposite. you get lethargic, sleepy, and irritable

>>
>>25531651
Caffeine has been researched a lot and found to cause no changes in brain structure or chemistry comparable to genuinely addictive substances like nicotine.

But it's a stimulant. Of course you feel tired, unmotivated, have headaches, etc after you stop taking the stimulant because you never noticed how fucking tired you really were when it forcibly extracted better performance out of you. That's it. Those are not withdrawal symptoms, just your normal senses returning.
>>
>>25531576

I'll take even 1k, money is money.
>>
>>25531667
This is why the distinction "habit-forming" exists, specifically for substances that are "addictive" but not chemically addictive. At least, it should be used that way.
>>
>>25531679
As said, people can form habits with literally anything, but that no longer has anything to do with the subject itself but is more a personality problem.
>>
>>25531683
An addictive personality was a huge advantage before farming, you would get a guy fiending for a sniff of mammoth meat and berries and so getting them
>>
>>25531667
that's not your normal senses. your baseline is not insane pounding debilitating headaches. habitually drinking caffeine lowers your baseline. you become addicted to it to return to baseline. there's no long-term benefit to drinking it.
>>
>>25531667
wrong
Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors so your brain adapts by creating more which makes the stimulant the "new normal". When you get off of caffeine you still have the excess receptors which is what causes the feeling of withdrawl.

That looks like a short man so that's probably on a 6.5ft, maybe 7ft sword, and for some reason the handle is gigantic, it's probably ornamental. Historically greatswords are around 5ft, 6ft at the max upper end. It just becomes useless as a weapon of war after that
The minutia isn't really the point though, it's that it blows my mind how people correct other people on factual info without even bothering to look it up themselves. Especially when you do it to an author who probably did research it themself first. It's just so weird, why?

It's true that you need to practice to get better but there's multiple versions of this saying and none of them are specifically true. There are a few people who write 1 story and immediately become a hit and there are many people that will write dozens and never get read.
You can read this as needing to build experience or as each story being a shot at gambling. Both are sort of true.
>>
>>25532073
its true but dismissive, some people get much better faster and some people seemingly never improve for one reason or another
you can write a hit web novel on your first try and also fail to after 30 attempts
write because you like it first and foremost, dont go in thinking hard work will guarantee anything, it just helps you improve. but everyone's starting point and ceiling is lower or higher, plus luck is a factor. make peace with that idea
>>
>>25531883
>The question is how to make yourself addicted to writing.
You're not going to like the answer.
Caffeine.

More seriously, I actively manage my dopamine sources. I only drink energy drinks when I write. I only have soda prior to the gym. I mainly read web novels and light novels at lunch before the gym, and in between sets and on the treadmill. My only sweets are protein shakes, after the gym.

The rest of my dopamine is non-physical, for the most part. Vidya and anime in the late afternoon and evening to unwind, then bed.

My understanding is the body cannot actually distinguish between the substance and what one is doing while one consumes the substance. I legitimately get excited at night before bed thinking about writing the next morning. I get excited when the next day is a lifting day and I can eat something tasty. I look forward to the evening's anime especially since there's been a lot of good stuff lately.

That all said I do have to actively manage my dopamine because I have an addictive personality/genetics and I've already been to rehab for alcoholism once and I'm NEVER going back to that.

Lots of authors in the past smoked while writing, if I recall correctly. Probably the same thing except I don't know if they just wrote and smoked all day or if they were more like me and limited smoking to writing time. I'd imagine not given what I've seen of smokers.
>>
>>25532073
That's what I did and I think it went very well for me. I improved a shitton between my first book and my sixth.

No, swords like that were primarily used by bodyguards. The idea being, they're protecting someone in an urban environment, so anyone trying to kidnap them is going to have to use smaller weapons that are concealable. The Montante uses a giant fuckoff sword which they swing around to prevent anyone getting close to their ward. They don't actually need to win the fight, just keep everyone away until the rest of the guards arrive, so the long weapon was half sword, half spear, hence the extra long handle.
They were a specific weapon for a specific role used in a specific way.

Don't worry anon my VRMMO story will definitely be SAO done right. It'll have dungeonslop, it'll have a million characters, harems, guilds, it'll have "you die in game you die in real life" shit, it'll have people questioning if a virtual world is really that different from the real world. I promise you, it will be the peakest of peaks, nobody will remember SAO one year from release.

I did frame it impersonally as if im going through 3rd party indie submissions, I'm aware of its tendency to be a massive sycophant. I'm not completely delusional and writing for fun not for megabucks and fame.

The big sticking point I have is a big convention in July I attend every year, and this year I made a mistake in saying yes to too many engagements from march onward trying to be more social. I had a lot of fun, sure, but it totally fucked up my internal rhythm. So I'd try to pull back, and everyone would try to get their hooks in me before I disappeared again, and I would over-extend myself trying not to be anti-social.

Throw in some respiratory infections that wouldn't quit because I didn't give myself proper rest and boom, burnout in august. At that point my mask started visibly slipping so when I told people I /needed/ to hide away until Halloween, possibly Thanksgiving, they were a bit more understanding. For instance, hardly anyone has called to bother--I mean check up on me in a month, and I'm really grateful and appreciative of that.

Maintaining a consistent posting schedule has just proven more stressful and difficult than I thought it would, although I'm getting better at forecasting what I can and can't do.

Being able to write consistently is basically impossible for 99% of people. I've even come to see this period of my life as an author as entirely temporary. I simply will not have the time to write any significant amount of words if I get a job AND start a family. At best I might write an essay every now and then.

I wish you the best of luck.

Chatgpt doesn't know what makes webnovels successful and its advice will actively sabotage you
You can ask it to write a chapter 1, feed it back in a new chat, and it would say thay chapter is better than top web novels because it's judging by broken or irrelevant metrics

NTA but you can get around this a bit by (as sincerely as possible, it can almost read your mind via your writing) roleplaying as your work being some "asshole" coworker's work who is also lazy and scamming the company so therefore you need to tear it to shreds to get him fired. It'll still get a lot of shit wrong and I haven't used that tactic for writing yet, just code, but it's the only thing I've found that balances out sycophancy at least a bit.

>>25533388
Good luck. This is the wrong attitude to have.
>>
>>25532788
Are you sure you aren't overgeneralizing? Why wouldn't they use halberds or glaives or something most of the time?

the issue isn't the sycophancy it's that it doesn't know what makes fiction work
go grab gifted or mla's first chapter and try that, and watch it systematically butcher 2 of the best performing web novel openings ever
i would say do it on big names like mother of learning too, but it has those in its training data and recognizes them

I'm writing a story that pretty much steals most of legend of the galactic hero beats (mainly strictly yang's pov) and nobody really cares, partly because it's not isekai/litrpg. at most I've been told by a few people who only read part of my story that it makes you want to read/watch the originals instead, I mean if people want to get into lotgh that's a win in my book at least, but yo won't be getting my vision on the other hand

Strictly speaking LLMs don't "know" anything. It's a next word predictor.
People who start to anthropomorphize it or believe that it thinks or reasons are failing the turing test. People who think the output has artistic merit anyway simply don't have any standard of what good art is.
Now, all that aside, there's another problem with using AI as an editor that's the same problem as every author using the same REAL PERSON as an editor: they're all going to get similar advice and guidance that makes their works all very similar, which is boring. It becomes nearly impossible, especially for people who haven't developed a strong "voice" or convictions about their writing, to produce unique and creative works. To the extent that they agree with the "feedback" text they generate, they'll fall into alignment with everyone else who uses the same feedback generator. It's like how MFAs took over tradpub literary fiction and every book was OBVIOUSLY the result of the same MFA program standards and tastes.
Nobody cares but my recommendation would be for new authors who are writing poorly would be to read more, study about writing more, and maybe take a community college class on creative writing to at least get them pointed in the right direction. All that instead of using an LLM for instant gratification.
>>
>>25533912
seems like we agree then
not sure if you're a new anon but the guy i responded to seemed to think it was a prompting issue. but LLMs are worse than useless in this domain, they will actively sabotage you while sounding sensible

>not sure if you're a new anon
Yeah I'm not the guy who was trying to explain how it's actually a good thing. Just a regular ol' LLM hater.

Fuck yeah. Unironically feels great. Even if I get a shitty rating later that pushes me back in the old channel I already got the screenshot.

For me it's been having a bunch of ongoing projects of different genres and tones at the same time. As soon as I hit a wall or bore of one I find another starts looking enticing and jump to that one. Also let myself get pulled by a whim occasionally. For example, got bogged down by a long serial then had an idea for a short form thing about a guy trapped in a room with no human contact. Been writing that damn thing constantly for the past two days and having a blast.
