I wish my parents didn't have me so old. They were 40 when I was born. I'm almost 40.
I don't know how much time I have left with them. I don't always like my parents, but I love them dearly. I wish I could've had much more time with them; sometimes I feel angry with them that I couldn't have been born when they were 30 or 25.
It's nobody's fault, though. It's not my fault and it's not theirs. It's just a reality of life that, inevitably, I will lose them. I hope I will be okay when that time comes.

My parents had me old. My dad died before I was sapient, and my mom is a severely mentally ill crazy addict actual prostitute who I haven’t spoken too since I moved out. My life is totally fucked but at the same time I’ve done extremely well. Sure I’m an unemployable virgin NEET but I also haven’t made any actual dumb decisions or fucked my life up in a very real way like guys my age who came from good families. I had everything against me and could easily have been a burnt out crazy homeless guy so I can’t be too mad. I even managed to go to college on full scholarship, too bad college is meaningless nowadays but at least I’m in no debt

I probably would have been better off as an orphan ward but I can’t be too upset at how my life has gone when you factor in how it started. Like every homeless guy I’ve heard from has an origin story extremely similar to mine

What math would you require for a humanities major?
It’s kind of shocking to me how many prestigious colleges that say they have a liberal arts minded curriculum basically stop humanities at high school math if they don’t want I take more. I think single and multi variable calculus and linear algebra should be the required classes
You’re basically consigning graduates to be third class citizens by not being able to talk about these things whatsoever.

The ability to understand complicated abstract systems using logic. Writing mathematical proof is just a good way to learn writing too. And yeah finance is a good one too. Why not?
All the same reasons we value studying the classics and writing about them. Understanding calculus, knowing Latin. Yeah.if you’re going to specifically study humanities I think it’s important. Nobody is expecting vocational training from this
>>
>>25539148
>The ability to understand complicated abstract systems using logic.
But do you need advanced calculus for that? Philosophy and basic math seems fine enough.

I agree that getting a bachelor's should prepare one to be a well-rounded, educated human being, which is why studying the classics and some math is required for everyone, but when you start getting into more advanced, specialized stuff, I think asking "what's the benefit" is a fair question, and I just don't see it for advanced calculus for the average person.
>>
>>25539154
Im sorry but that simply is not advanced or specialized stuff. It’s not even advanced calculus. I think it’s absurd to oppose this it also being able to perfectly accept that I mentioned Latin without question. I would consider being able to fluently read Latin much more advanced than understanding calculus
>>
>>25539160
I would consider Latin superfluous today just as much as calculus, yes.
>>
>>25539163
Okay. Then there’s nothing to discuss
>>

>>
>>25539166
There’s nothing to discuss. You’re being strange. I don’t know how much clearer I can be by bringing up Latin and specifically saying “im not doing vocational training”. What a weird misplaced argument

Why is it that when I post anything on this website some fat retarded nerd tries to argue with me. You know what? I never pick arguments with anyone. I just talk about things I love, things I'm passionate about, things I want to see improved with the world. Do you guys think you're getting anything by "winning" an argument? Seriously please tell me, what do you get out of this? Are you all just fucking losers? And if you are, why am I forced to read your thoughts? Where are all the good and interesting people nowadays who put effort into their lives? Because they're not on Substack. They're not on X. They're not on 4chan. They're not on the Sharty. They're not on Reddit. They're not on Instagram. They're not on Threads. They're not on Lainchan. They're not on TheMotte. They're not on Red Scare. They're nowhere. The internet is nowhere, it's nothing, it's just a nothing land, it's a giant public library filled with homeless people pissing in the corners and I just have no one on my level anymore intellectually, I feel like an adult trapped in a middle school and told "Enjoy!". How do you expect me not to crash out over this? This "thinking" stuff is not just a fun little thing for me, it's my fucking life blood, I -have- to do this shit or I go crazy, when I can't get any good thoughts in my head I start to go crazy. Am I really just supposed to talk with AI from now on? Is that how it's going to be? Because it sure is looking like it.

I have a running theory that all the psychopaths of the world are exuberantly working their antisocial magic and showing their true colors because they know we're unequivocally fucked.
They're aware that some world ending event is approaching some time in the next 100 years and so they're taking as much as they can, as fast as they can, to either enjoy it before we all expire or build and hide in an underground bunker (most billionaires have one).
It seems like they're aware that maintaining an image is rapidly becoming useless, so much so that they're dropping the yoke and eating everything in sight.
It's not enough for me to presume people are acting stupid anymore.

I remember sitting on a beach in California with my girlfriend Maya, sitting beneath her on a black rock feeling like I was Satan staring into a representation of conditional reality on top a rock of more natural beige.
She never necessarily approved of compulsive use of LSD, but remember a time she created a connection in my mind that felt like the purest experience of love.
I don't recall exactly what she told me, or how that thought could possibly form, but I found it strange that through her study of forensic anthropology and evolutionary psychology, that she was told by a professor secured by tenure that race was genetically valid.
I was willing to entertain that egalitarian principles could subordinate the truth, because it seemed to excite the cynical thought that humans didn't deserve to be free at all.

Austin, Texas, 2015, two years before the End of the World.
Despite being a point where many thoughts converged, it was primarily the catalyst for alienation from the Political Left.
Slowly I began to it see it a something that had become immune to self-critique, and became eclipsed by its dependence on vicious, moral dogma.
Something about its spirit seemed thoroughly processed by its own meticulous design, that it treats itself with such irrational self-assurance that seems nothing more than a corrosive, central rot.
This did not compel me to betray myself into some chimp with a shiny gun, but just a solemn reminder that my ideal of small, agrarian peace was something impossible to reach.

i’ve got 3 terabytes of 60’s pre-ambient 800 gigs of live recordings of this local band called the fuckerfucks. They played only 2 shows before breaking up but I had 11 redundant recording rigs all recording flac which I then layered over one another for 25,000 kbps bitrate. 8 terabytes of the beatles. No not THOSE beatles, the new beatles. They haven’t recorded an album yet and technically they’re not really a band yet but they’re indie-gospel-post-funk-punk style is going to be huge when you guys hear their stuff in about 5 years. 4 petabytes of the Ethiopian Free Jazz wave that occurred in 1973 in a town called Wenji Gefersi. 18 terabytes of sound check recordings from the mid 90’s band LFO. They only scored a hit with “I like girls (who wear abercrombie and fitch)” but they were way ahead of their time. That’s just my C: drive. I have 41 drives.

Hi, Logan!
>>
when you idolise something you automatically separate yourself from it. people who say (for example) ‘/lit/ is a classical board’ will never really be ‘refined’. they can be assumed on the spot to be barred from anything you might dignify with the name of culture. real depth, real cultural literacy, tends to come with a shift in disposition, not just in taste.

>I hate that aesthetic game of the eye and the mind, played by these connoisseurs, these mandarins who 'appreciate' beauty. What is beauty, anyway? There's no such thing. I never 'appreciate,' any more than I 'like.’

I wish I could come up with a concept as good a Pokemon, or Lord of the Rings, or Banjo Kazooie. We're all trying to be the next Joyce or DFW, but that isn't a very high aim, relatively speaking. Why settle for elaborate word-management when you could hit on a concept that pulls together sight, sound, words, colours, forms, actions, commands, memories, worlds, dreams and life and gives the reader / player / viewer pure entertainment by allowing them to engage in a world they could only conceive in their own faraway dreams in some forgotten past life. I'm looking for a concept that can connect a person with themselves, awakening their own creativity and wonder by supplanting the everyday nonsense and degradation of their conscience with a concept that searches for the adventurous spirit and once found holds it to the light and lets it grow into a light that shines outwardly and reveals the hidden meaning behind the everyday, uniting the mundane with the impossible, the corrupted with the pure, and the melancholic with the joyous. There is a rare form of art-making that seizes upon a idea that we were already expecting, or at least hoping to find, although we might not have known it, and makes more sense to us than the real world. The artist's world may be fictional, but its base-level logic is as firm and fixed as this one, and feels more familiar still. As the word expands and details are filled in, the author and the consumer build together in perfect symmetry and to such a scale, both large and small, that both may contemplate the infinite minutia of the imagined universe until time beyond reckoning.
I often wonder how these favoured creators stumble upon their famous creations, and whether they were blessed, skilled beyond belief, or simply stumbled out into the same abysmal plane of creativity in which the rest of us blindly cast our nets, where the greatest ideas hang in the farthest reaches of the void and must be purchased with exceptional dexterity, enterprise, and timing, and came back haunted by the light of the god of creativity itself, with the blueprint of their magnum opus etched onto their retina and their hands inspired by divine inspiration and poised to ply their trade upon their ultimate creation for the enjoyment and betterment of all.

Bright light, almost blinding
Black night, still there shining
I can't stop, keep on climbing
Looking for what I knew
Had a friend, she once told me
"You got love, you ain't lonely"
Now she's gone and left me only, looking for what I knew
Mmm, I'm telling you now
The greatest thing you ever can do now
Is trade a smile with someone who's blue now
It's very easy, just-
Met a man on the roadside crying
Without a friend, there's no denying
You're incomplete, they'll be no finding
Looking for what you knew
So anytime somebody needs you
Don't let them down, although it grieves you
Some day you'll need someone like they do
Looking for what you knew
Mmm, I'm telling you now
The greatest thing you ever can do now
Is trade a smile with someone who's blue now
It's very easy just
Oh, yeah

I'm seething with self-hatred because I can't get out of a rut. No motivation, no desire to live. All I do is distract myself with bright colorful youtube slop and 4chan and porn. I'm on an SSRI and I can barely ejaculate. It's been months I don't actually work and my boss is buying the depression tale and the psychiatrist is a moron and my wife wants me to get better and feel better and wants to help but I went on this stupid long work trip to other side of the world and I'm thinking of ending it almost daily.
I know it's all fucked, I hate AI, I hate the attention economy, I hate how soft and weak I have allowed myself to become due to the conveniences and little pleasures of technology. I am physically and mentally weak. I hate what's become of the world. AI is making intellectual jobs mere sports or hobbies and I although I see it clear as day I'm too weak to just start getting stronger and practicing new skills. I know the world will be in chaos, especially in the cities on the coming decades, and I cannot bring myself to start looking to buy a farm. I hate all that's happening and I hate myself and I can't stop being this pathetic and weak. I hate the therapist and have stopped going there. I think the SSRI makes me more impulsive; I wasn't as pathetic before. I want to stop taking it but fear that will just make me worse and make me actually kill myself.
Shit shit shit shit I can't stop saying profanities out loud when alone. I even wake up saying "fuck I hate myself I want to die", and I repeat that shit incontrollably for minutes sometimes, even laughing or in front of the mirror. I keep consuming information that is completely pointless, like how to use a new programming language or whatever. I can't stop reading about my problems instead of acting. I am disgusted at my passivity yet still glued to the screens. I want to end the thoughts, /lit/. I spent an hour crying under the shower like a little girl. I just want the thoughts to end.

I'm about 20 pages from finishing DeLillo's novel The Names and I gotta say, I really feel like I've wasted my time. Truly a novel about nothing, that says nothing, that does nothing.

>what didn't you like about it?
Nearly every page seemed to be about nothing. The characters bullshit about nothing, the cult is some three person nothing, Jim's job relates to nothing, what's this theme about ancient languages and archeology, it's all nothing. And I can deal with nothing so long as there's poetic language and the occasional interesting insight, and the novel often comes close to those but never actually gets there.

As for DeLillo, I've read half of White Noise before I put it down years ago but I plan on trying it again since it comes included in this Library of America book I'm reading which contains The Names, White Noise, and Libra. I'll probably read Libra too. The only other I read was Point Omega which I did enjoy, even though that's also a book about nothing, but it has a lot of cool insights into art and the metaphysics of terrain and community. The library also has Zero K so I'll probably get to that at some point too.

>>25540636
I get what you're saying, Delillo is almost always not about plot but about language and style, and I do understand that he's not for everybody, and yeah, almost every novel of his kinda takes a shit on plot about halfway through or near the end.
I still suggest you at least try Libra since that is his most conventional book I think.
>>
>>25540650
Maybe I just didn't properly understand the conversations between the characters, and there was more depth and insight there than I thought. I don't mind when a novel is light on plot and it's mainly characters bullshitting about art, philosophy, and society like a French new wave film, but then the stuff they're saying has to be interesting and insightful at least. So again, maybe I just missed it here. But yeah, like I said, I'll finish reading the other two, then Zero K, and then will probably go out and buy Underworld, Mao II, and so on.

Coming to terms with the fact that I will never have love due to my looks.
I compare with my friends who have robust romantic and sexual lives and I ask one of them what they would do if they could never have that again, and they say "I'd probably kill myself."
I honestly am at a loss for purpose in my life. I can toil or get rich, it doesn't really matter as wealth cannot buy genuine desire that genetics provide. I think towards flaws in my character, yet if I was attractive enough none of those flaws would even matter. Just read about all the annecdotes of women that get mad at their partner who cannot be bothered to even wipe their ass. Even lacking the bare minimum is excusable. If I was more attractive my personality wouldn't matter, but also if I was, my personality would have developed differently entirely. The weight of being an ugly background character wears you down as it is constant, and it's the person staring back at you every time you look in the mirror. No one has anything meaningful to say. They're either below me in heirarcy so they are bitter towards the world and envious for what little I do have, or they are above me and give empty platitudes as they have no stake in my outcome and are just trying to grab up what little they can within their own means. I don't blame anyone, I just feel tired. If my purpose is to be a dead genetic end I would rather just go to sleep and not wake up rather than toil for another 40 years.

Oofy doofy shit. Can't get do escorts because of my job, and I'm not looking for just sex. There are people who for political reasons choose to present domestication and selective breeding (as in, Eugenics) as opposed. But now that I think about it, I realize that is very stupid. As selective breeding is in fact a core part of the domestication process.

Then again, there is close to no real connection between these people and the actual Eugenics movement. Other than the former attempting to ape the latter.

There is an unspoken thread in his late works where he seems to believe the Jews come from India. The French translation of the Laws of Manu he read has an infamous preface where the translator speculates that an Aryan tribe migrated westward from the birthplace of civilization in India toward the Nile where they established Egypt as a caste society like the one in India. From this caste society, a group of Chandalas fled into the nearby Sinai Penninsula and afterward the land of Palestine, becoming Jews. Hence why Nietzsche keeps equating Chandala and Jew.

This is basically all of Delillo. Once you get over expecting a conventional "novel" he's awesome. You just need to remember that he has virtually no interest in traditional plot, he thinks it's an artificial imposition that obscures more than it reveals. That being said things do happen, but they're much more on the level of character/idea than plot. Plot in Delillo is a pesky thing that needs to quasi-occur so the work can move into another location. Oddly enough, keeping Faulkner in mind works too; he's never listed as one of Faulkner's inheritors, but he is, even more so than McCarthy. Quick and dirty way to think about this is Delillo keeps Faulkner's structural obsessiveness around time/recurrence/layered ideation and thinks that he was asking the right questions but had all the wrong answers and forced it through the wrong aperture, plot

>friend is reading Dune (because of movie/popular of course)
>I posted a passage from Consider the Lobster in the group chat.
>friend asked me "lol did Frank wrote this?"
It is very hard to put into words why this angers me to this day, so I won't. I tried 500 words, greentexts, essays. I tried stories, narratives. Hell I wrote a limerick but I cannot capture the essence without sounding mopey on why "lol did Frank (not Herbert, Frank) wrote this?" Because it seems minor. So what my friend who doesn't read books has a limited knowledge about books? Why am I so upset?

I think therein lies the problem. From my group, you have me as the one who reads the most. But I had to fight for it. Every day. You think I'm joking, but I'm not. Even going on 4chan itself had to be cut. I read in the morning before work, to edge out a couple pages. I read at lunch a couple of pages. I read essays and poems and short stories on my computer during work and write my own, because it is the only time I can sustained time on it. In my hour long commute home I play audiobooks of the books I already read, just to make sure I got it right and/or not need to spend time rereading them. I always read a book on the virgin run, no questions ask. But asking me to do that on a reread, when I barely have enough time for new works? That's too much. Then when I get home I have to managed the damn house, the damn wife, the damn chores and the damn baby. And in between all of these spaces, like now as I am watching her fall asleep, do I have to decide between reading, 4chan or playing a game. In all likelihood this will be my only post of the day, I play for half an hour and then I get sidetracked into something else. And in that time, I would whip out my phone between the spaces of the day like on the toilet, waiting in line or even driving home to read just one paragraph.

And my friend who doesn't read a damn thing unless it's popular enough is second place in our friend group. Because nobody gives a hoot about literature anymore. I got nobody to discuss poetry with or zines or whatnot. It's just the isolation. I never appreciated how in school, everyone had to read the same book, at the same time.

Maybe I gotta bite the bullet and join a book club for christ sake.

I’m reading this book by General Reinhard Gehelen called “The Service”. It might be the first book I’ve ever read that had an anonymous review by a CIA operator on the CIA’s website. It’s all about Gehelen’s career in the world of intelligence gathering and international espionage starting with his time serving under the Weimar Republic through WWII and his time working for the Nazis and then continuing under the Americans in occupied West Germany. It’s a fascinating book but it’s damn near impossible to find a copy, I just stumbled on one irl and picked it up. I guess because it’s not something America is proud of, just like all the other operation paperclip stuff.

My dad went homeless at 50 years old. At this rate, I'm going to be homeless before 30. I truly don't think society has literally any place in it for me. Whatever this world wants, I don't have it.

The review is worth reading even if you have no interest in the book. Though it is 12 pages long, long for a review but short compared to a novel.

My mom got mad whenever someone implied they thought I was autistic. My father not so much. But he did treat me like I'm a retard.
I spent a lot of my late childhood and teens paranoid that my parents had told people I was special needs and that I was getting special treatment.
>>
I’ve always been not socially retarded. I’ve never been accused of having autism, quite the opposite. I’m more of a narcissistic manipulator if anything

The sun is gold
The moon is white
The sun is male
The moon is female
Two beings intertwined with each other. No one better than another.
Tirelessly they tilt, tumble and twist they float through our great and starry abyss.
When the moon was young she made a promise to the sun:
"O Sun, when your day is done I shall begin my run. Ye must rest for the next grueling test. Go and sleep so. For night has the right."
The sun replied:
"O Moon, those meteors did a real number on you. 17 million years ago you could speak to me normally, But you can only speak in rhymes now?"

I've reached the point where the mere words "pit" and "hairy" make me aroused.

Nope, I don’t even know who or what you’re talking about friendo, as I have a job, wife, and child and do not waste my entire life in this or any other general on 4channel

The one time I decided to read an introduction, it spoils two major character deaths in the second paragraph. It isn't a commonly read classic either. The paragraph literally goes:
> [All normal information about the writing style]. Other aspects of it recall a tragedy or opera. Indeed, the 20th century English novel does not prepare the reader for the death of the heroine [name] and hero [name].
It's just the sudden nature of the reveal, mid paragraph, where formerly it only described neutral aspects of style and narrative construction. I naïvely thought I would be able to recognize when a spoiler would occur, but they seem to construct it so well that my only hint was "tragedy."

It’s pretty uneventful, though would make a good palate cleanser if you read something legitimately disturbing. I may pick it back later on.

to me I really enjoy its comic tone and its playfulness, those types of picaresque novels I really am fond of usually

That happened to me when I read Leave Her To Heaven. The introduction summary just casually compared her to the Greek figure Medea and then listed plot points that they had in common that completely spoiled the story

I feel like a piece of trash that was abandoned by all of humanity. Even on 4chan I never get replies.

How did we build a world where a guy can fall through the cracks and there will just be nobody to catch him? If he's a fucked up tweaker freak I can sorta understand, but a normal guy...? Like one who's intelligent and sober and wants to get better?

You’d probably be better served by this insane world if you were a tweaked out freak. In my state they brought in all these new rules for getting social services like Medicaid but anyone “in drug or alcohol treatment” is exempt from them, so now my unemployed drug dealing neighbors all get to keep their welfare as long as they keep taking their methadone, but a sober cancer patient needs to get a job or they’ll lose their healthcare
>>
>>25541159
Yeah that has been my experience. If you're not a drug addict or a retard they just assume you failed because you're a bad person
>>
But really, guys. I think I'm on the verge of copying forestanon and just squatting in the woods. Society has totally mindraped me and I just can't be here much longer. I just worry about how my mom would feel. I'll probably have to lie to her and tell her I got a job.

My dad has been homeless for 10 years.

I'm not really upset or emotional or anything. It's just kinda like, "What did I even do wrong...?"
I grew up in an emotionally abusive houshold, but I still held it down. I still tried college. I tried really hard to work. I failed. And now that I failed, no one's like, "Oh sorry man, maybe you can..." They're all just like, "Sucks to suck!"

I think I could have contributed a lot to society, but I was never actually given a chance to. It feels like society never wanted me to participate at all, somehow.
>>
It's like Fight Club: You do everything that they tell you to, only to wake up with your pockets empty and the entire world laughing at you.

And it's hard to even be angry, because it's just so obvious and clear that you were fucked. The frustration only comes in when you feel like, "Oh maybe I'm guilty of this somehow...". But when you know 100% for a fact that you really didn't do much wrong, and you just got completely fucked up the ass by wider society, it's like, ahh shucks, I guess that's just life.
>>
>>25541213
Modern society's main virtue is indifference (they prefer to call it "tolerance"). So people are just conforming to social norms by being indifferent towards your hardships.
You do you buddy, if you doing you means dying in a ditch, I'm tolerant enough to stand by and pretend it's not happening. I'm a virtuous person, who am I to tell you what to do with your life
>>
The trick is to love getting fucked in the ass. At least that's my experience.

>Modern society's main virtue is indifference (they prefer to call it "tolerance").
A.K.A., "No one has any standards anymore" and "Empathy no longer exists".

What prevents me from going that route is that I want to actually own the land, so nobody can evict me when I get comfortable.

You don't really need to cover your poo. Dung beetles exist for a reason. Plus if the forest is well-maintained, controlled burns will destroy whatever poo remains.

I feel like there definitely have to be some really slick, easy, comfortable, and attainable squatter lifestyles out there. Most people who squat are 80 IQ druggies so they don't really put effort into this.

The past week or so, I have really come to terms that I will never have a romantic or sexual relationship with a woman. A core experience of the human condition and I will be forever exempt from it. There was one woman recently whom I thought would be the one, but she ended up ghosting me; which was especially crushing given the fact that she said she genuinely enjoyed speaking to me in our correspondence.

It's funny to think about. My dad was fucked over by society too. He was part of the Oxycontin generation. 15 years later he'd be crying in the arms of a pastor as the guy looked around awkwardly for someone to escort him out of the church. For him it was a brutal and emotional process, watching his entire life spiral down around him over the course of multiple years; losing the house, the boat, the real estate license. I never built anything up, so I have nothing to lose. I thought when he decided to be homeless out on the Las Vegas streets, he'd be dead in a couple years, but somehow he's still alive and kicking 10 years later. I wonder if being out there on the streets could have healed him.

Drunk driver at elementary school bus stop, he was 6 i was 3, so me not really conscious like that. But i have been told I was the one verbally saying ‘it will be okay’ to my parents growing up, and i have seen that reflected throughout my life. Mom said she would have killed herself if there wasnt another kid (fair desu)

It's really the opposite for me. I've more or less had everything handed to me from a young age. I had the opportunity to live a relatively comfortable life, even in today's chaotic world, but wasted it through laziness and sheer stupidity. I wish I was never given internet access as a child.

When Nietzsche talked about the cruel world of the enlightenment crushing the spirit out of any sensitive soul 'save for those with spirits of iron, I thought he was being a little dramatic. Then I realized the same thing is still happening right now.
