>The Story Grid
>Written by Shawn Coyne
>The Story Grid is a tool developed by editor Shawn Coyne to analyze stories and provide helpful editorial comments. It’s like a CT Scan that takes a photo of the global story and tells the editor or writer what is working, what is not, and what must be done to make what works better and fix what’s not.

>The Story Grid is a tool with many applications:

>1. It will tell a writer if a Story “works” or “doesn’t work.”

>2. It pinpoints story problems but does not emotionally abuse the writer, revealing exactly where a Story (not the person creating the Story . . . the Story) has failed.

>3. It will tell the writer the specific work necessary to fix that Story’s problems.

>4. It is a tool to re-envision and resuscitate a seemingly irredeemable pile of paper stuck in an attic drawer.

>5. It is a tool that can inspire an original creation.
Has anyone read this? It sounds like another formulaic writing style guide, but I could be wrong.

I did! I have written every day for the past week, I'm very proud of myself. I'm over the halfway mark on my first book!

My brother has some extra laptops for me to use for writing. He has a Mac and one with Windows. Which should I take? I obviously have much more experience with Windows but I don't know, maybe the Mac would be better for writing. That could just be me falling victim to marketing however. Thoughts?
>>
>>25535875
Ask if you can borrow both to try out, see which you like. Most would say Mac I think but it really depends on how old each of them are and what the battery life is like.

Ideally I would but he lives across the country and is gonna bring it when he comes over here for a wedding, so I only get one blind shot at a decision lol

>Has anyone read this? It sounds like another formulaic writing style guide, but I could be wrong.
I read it. In its defense, it tells you right away that it teaches you to write a story "that sells," meaning it will keep people engaged, but it also bases the 'formula' on many successful classic ones. At its most basic, I think the author is saying, "something must happen in your story" or "something needs to change along the way." It sounds obvious, but a lot of authors try to write a story where nothing really happens or changes, and the characters just wander about "sightseeing."

thoughts on web novels?
or is that like the polar opposite of this general
>>
I am done trying with outlining for creative writing.
I just end up totally ignoring the outline anyway. So instead I will reverse outline as I go.
Sort of like making a map as I go instead of a blueprint of what to build. A tool to assist in structural editing, rather than one to help with drafting.
>>
>>25536244
>thoughts on web novels?
generally much lower quality than published works but interesting in how they remove the need for a publisher
as for whether a given writer should think about writing serially depends entirely on their goals and the content of what they want to write
>or is that like the polar opposite of this general
this general isn't really "anything". there are genre seethers and there are slophogs and both are equally noisy
>>
>>25536244
Much like all other self publishing formats, there is some good and a lot of bad.
As a writer I like them since it has high feedback in the form of statistics and comments from actual readers, and the barrier to entry is nearly non-existent.
However because the barrier is low it's hard to stand out among the slop, AND they aren't very popular even among most readers.
Ideally even if you were into writing web novels you would double or triple dip by publishing in other formats and platforms in proper book form.

As a reader, I tend to only enjoy them in audio formats, usually using TTS to listen to them while I am drudging away at work. This is partially due to not liking to read a ton of text on screens anymore. But more to do with being able to listen to audio at work allows me to have a solid 9 hours including commutes of uninterrupted "reading". Which is idea for such long novels with sometimes hundreds of chapters.
>>
>>25536253
>lower quality
>the content they wish to write

So are web novels just dedicated for light novels/weeb novels, then? I thought the only difference was the chapter by chapter publishing scheme, instead of dropping an entire book. If I had fancy prose weebshit would that be better as a web novel or normal novel?
>>
>>25536293
I think it depends on the particular site and target demographic. That said a lot of people in the space do both web novels, then repackage and re-edit their stuff into a normal novel.
It isn't a ether or thing. Some even treat the web-novel as the early access beta form of the final book they envision (to borrow game publishing lingo).

Here's the start of my novel. What can I improve?

After a year of slavery in the Salt Mines of Endovier, Celaena
Sardothien was accustomed to being escorted everywhere in shackles
and at sword-point. Most of the thousands of slaves in Endovier
received similar treatment—though an extra half-dozen guards always
walked Celaena to and from the mines. That was expected by
Adarlan’s most notorious assassin. What she did not usually expect,
however, was a hooded man in black at her side—as there was now.
He gripped her arm as he led her through the shining building in
which most of Endovier’s officials and overseers were housed. They
strode down corridors, up flights of stairs, and around and around
until she hadn’t the slightest chance of finding her way out again.
At least, that was her escort’s intention, because she hadn’t failed
to notice when they went up and down the same staircase within a
matter of minutes. Nor had she missed when they zigzagged between
levels, even though the building was a standard grid of hallways and
stairwells. As if she’d lose her bearings that easily. She might have
been insulted if he wasn’t trying so hard.
They entered a particularly long hallway, silent save for their
footsteps. Though the man grasping her arm was tall and fit, she could
see nothing of the features concealed beneath his hood. Another tactic
meant to confuse and intimidate her. The black clothes were probably
a part of it, too. His head shifted in her direction, and Celaena flashed
him a grin. He looked forward again, his iron grip tightening.
It was flattering, she supposed, even if she didn’t know what was
happening, or why he’d been waiting for her outside the mine shaft.
After a day of cleaving rock salt from the innards of the mountain,
finding him standing there with six guards hadn’t improved her mood.
But her ears had pricked when he’d introduced himself to her
overseer as Chaol Westfall, Captain of the Royal Guard, and suddenly,
the sky loomed, the mountains pushed from behind, and even the
earth swelled toward her knees. She hadn’t tasted fear in a while—
hadn’t let herself taste fear. When she awoke every morning, she
repeated the same words: I will not be afraid. For a year, those words
had meant the difference between breaking and bending; they had
kept her from shattering in the darkness of the mines. Not that she’d
let the captain know any of that.
>>
>>25536375

Isn't too gripping of a first impression. Maybe insert "I will not be afraid" a thr start and instead of explaining that she repeats it, just have her drop that line a few times.

Also in general the tone doesn't feel fake cocky to hide scared, it just feels genuinely cocky with zero scared, its giving mixed vibes

>I thought the only difference was the chapter by chapter publishing scheme
Where did you get that idea? The sort of content that can thrive in tradpub is 20x more diverse than what can thrive in web novels. The vast majority of genres are underrepresented if not outright nonexistent online.
Broadly speaking, you need to be writing something that serializes well... meaning arc-based, cyclical, very long stories. Shorter stories do exist, but they are very rare.
>So are web novels just dedicated for light novels/weeb novels, then?
Not exactly, unless you're using weeb in too broad a manner. Litrpg, cultivation, superheroes - the overlap with the weeb community is large, but very different from LNs.
>If I had fancy prose weebshit would that be better as a web novel or normal novel?
I just told you the content is what matters most, not prose style.
But purple prose is very rare. Admittedly, that's also true in tradpub these days, unless you're writing and marketing your book toward the literary fiction crowd.
It exists in WNs, but it's very uncommon.

>>
>>25536506
Well, writers write about things that interest them, love or hate. So really, all writing is just the perfect chance for a reader to psychoanalyze the author and out him as a chud. If the author writes a 'villain', it is because there is some part of him that entertains those villainous thought, no matter how much he denies it. Everything you write about is an active endorsement of it, so be very careful, and only write ethically.

NTA but I didn't, care to drop any names? I'm pretty confident my writing wouldn't thrive on RR

No, I was talking about the general spread of sites not just RR. Do you really think e.g. short thriller novels thrive anywhere? Quite a lot of mainstream tradpub genres dont thrive anywhere on the internet.
>>

Though I suppose I underemphasized romance. However I think romance does better in selfpub than wattpad and ao3 The RR SB SV SH sphere is uniquely beneficial for writers in the genres I mentioned, to the point I would actively advise against going tradpub even if they offered.

Genuinely, I don't understand why "personal/relationship problems" are here. For a class I think most of this is fine, but I think the problem is that it's too opposing. I would phrase it as "write a regular joe life style story." E.g. a bank teller getting a divorced, a kid getting bullied, etc etc. I feel the point of most of these rules is to orient the student to not make genre fiction and write literary fiction for the class. But with that one, itty bitty line, it ruins any attempt at literary fiction. Now what?

I have a sheet where I track my writing progress. It is very simple; I set a target/expected total word count, and using that I track the percentage. I also track days between writing for some accountability. I started doing it for my current novel and it's very useful.
I try to hit at least 2500 words a week. This is a very easy goal, and usually surpass it in 2-3 days. But I'm not strict with following and tracking that.
I don't track the hours written as it is very variable, but I'll probably do it for the next book once I find a consistent way to track it. This would get me some more interesting metrics, like words per hour. Currently though, I write about 1h/day on average.
I find tracking these things very helpful as it makes progress concrete and easy to follow. Some may not think like me, but in my case, it motivates me to write more. Knowing that I can, in 2-3 hours, advance 1% of the novel, then that makes reaching the end look achievable in only a handful of months.

I've spent 6 years that way. 3 first drafts but I feel physical pain whenever I try to edit them - ashamed of the quality and overwhelmed by the amount of changes it would need.
Has anyone gone through this?
>>
>>25537847
Yes. A first draft is going to make you cringe no matter what, but there's some things that worked for me:
If it's about the writing style, try doing a bunch of shorter stuff until you hone the voice you want and writing in that style becomes natural. Then your first drafts won't be as far from your target.
If it's story structure stuff, do some outlining first. Editing an outline is a lot easier and induces less cringe, since it's just an outline.
>>
I think pantsers might be on to something. I have been trying to keep to my outline, and it legitimately just makes the story less fun. I think I may have to just start winging shit from this point on.

Also unless you intentionally suppress it, any story you write that is long enough will pick up more and more bits of who and what you are without any effort on your part.

This is why it's important to write in a format that can be diffed as text, e.g. Markdown. Then you can review your changes visually and patch up anything that went astray. You can also store your revisions in git, and use pandoc to convert to e-book/paperback format. I've mentioned this workflow several times, so if you're still doing it the hard way, that's all on you.

Decided to shift things around in the story I am writing to have a "in medias res" beginning instead of the chronological one I started with.

That said my brain is still drained from going all out on the true inciting incident so I am debating on just rewriting the chronological first chapter now to give myself something easy to work on while I get my groove back, or if I should push ahead and write the "in medias res" chapter and establish the framing device for what will become flash backs.

It's both for genera convention reasons but also because it means I don't have to make up stuff between inciting incident and when the story really gets going.

Instead I can go

Yes, I was a little bit unclear but as long as you have a clear idea of how to make the first chapter interesting or entertaining then chronological is fine. If you're creatively blocked then "in medias res" is fine to get past the issue. I do not want to read a boring first chapter or couple of chapters or you will have a high likelihood that people drop the story. There is simply to much slop around.

>You have to be a good critic to be a good writer or artist in general in any medium

Is this really true? From my own personal experience, critics tend to be really bad at creating things. Every single time I've seen a prolific critic getting into writing things of their own, they always end up making something terrible, often with the very same things that they critique other works for.

All of the best artists that I've ever met tend to be absolutely dogshit at critiquing things or they're milquetoast at best. They have a basic idea of what makes something good or bad, but not much real insight into it beyond that.

My point being that I've rarely, if ever seen anybody be both prolific as one and the other simultaneously.

No, it's not true, and I've never seen that opinion asserted either.
The variation that holds some weight is: you need good taste to be a good artist, since taste is what guides you in your path of improvement. It's your north star as a newbie.

i went to art school, getting and giving critiques was a big part of the first year.
it's not like you need to be a "professional" critic where there is a sense of entertainment in the critique, but you need to develop a thick skin and you need to be honest with yourself and with other people.
go find a shit artist and tell them something that is objectively wrong with their work and watch them sperg out.
>ACTUALLY THE HANDS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE FUCKED UP!
>>
>>25538981
>you need to be honest with yourself
I agree with this (in regard to being crucial to improving as an author/artist), but it's not relevant to being a good critic lol
You don't need to be able to give good feedback. Presumably a good artist knows enough about their field to talk about it intelligently, but even so, I'm sure there are authors out there writing good books who couldn't verbalize their thoughts/break down another person's story well. Similarly I'm sure there are artists who are self taught and intuitively understand how to draw yet would struggle to help other people improve their art.
>>
>>25538993
i would agree with that for the most part, especially with self taught artists. you can't develop a proper vocabulary if you are learning in isolation.
but i think there are some people who love the idea of the arts being some mystical and intangible thing that there were lucky enough to be born with, and those people really fuck everything up for newfags.

>>
>>25538944
>From my own personal experience
That's the problem. If you're an awful critic yourself, how can you even tell the difference between good and bad critics? You're saying 'prolific' but not 'good'. A good critic isn't someone who just dismantles and shits on things, a good critic also has an eye for quality. Your entire thought line is tainted from the root. Overall, I think the characterisation of the protagonist is clear and consistent ("idgaf about any of this, just tell me the damage and I'll either pay it or not") but the vet's is less clear. Is he a bleeding heart desperately trying to reach this man? Is he an egghead so deep in his expertise that he alienates his clients? Is he a charlatan looking to make a quick buck? Most of my criticism is presuming the first option is the intent, but I could be wrong.

>you can tell from her teeth
This seems kind of haughty/detached, like the vet expects him to know how to age a dog by its teeth. But the reader probably won’t know this (presuming it's even true and not artistic liberty), which alienates us from what's going on. Possibly effective, if the vet’s supposed to be a detached egghead, but not if he’s supposed to be folksy.
The spirit of the comment seems warranted, because the reader would certainly know that the dog didn't spring into existence the moment the protagonist laid eyes on her. I'd just try to ground it in something more universal, like maybe the vet tries and fails to turn it into a 'teachable moment' but the protagonist’s not interested/doesn’t pick up on it.

>Good thing you adopted her, then
>Well, it kept following me
This to me is the core of the scene and the clearest exchange therein, thumbs up.
In the build up, I get the impression that the vet’s asking these questions in attempt to be conversational rather than clinical, but the protagonist is just answering as if it’s part of the consultation process, with this exchange being the apex of their being at cross purposes.

On the other hand "I hear she's been feeling ill? Btw she has advanced cancer"
Up until now, this conversation reads like it's the vet's first time laying eyes on this dog. He didn't know her name or how old she was a minute ago, but apparently they've already run serious tests and gotten results back? This man did not enter the room with "btw your possibly beloved pet is about to die" energy.
This section is also a pretty bold confrontation. I feel like the potential tension of the whole scene lies in the vet's building judgement of the protagonist, starting with a friendly face and trying to nudge towards compassion until a breaking point of "Lookit, your dog's about to fucking die, you asshole," but it’s not hitting.

>"I don't do euthanasia"
In terms of characterisation, I'm assuming this is to show that the vet's not just going for a payday. But a vet straight up not doing euthanasia doesn't seem realistic to me. If anything, I'd expect the protagonist to try to walk out without paying for anything but the consultation, only for the vet to desperately suggest euthanasia as a humane alternative to no treatment at all.

So yeah, I’d agree that this mostly reads as an infodump about the MC and dog. Now I’d decide firmly who the vet is and what he hopes to get out of the exchange, and do an edit based on that.

I think I need a clear tension between the mc's apathy and the doctor's empathy
My idea is that the mc just have a dog, he doesn't care about it but isn't cruel either, and the doctor is a passionate person trying to convince the mc to do something about it
The beginning of the exchange will be normal, everyday conversation that will slowly transition into a confrontation once the doctor realize the mc doesn't care that much about the dog, and then the mc will double down and go away
That's how I think I'll rewrite this so it can have some sauce, the confrontation will be the highlight
Hopefully it will work, but it's very hard
I'm new to writing and it takes me days to write even one page, even thought I write everyday for an hour

Do an outline of acts
Then break each act out into sections/sequences
Then each of those out into individual scenes
Then each of those into scene beats
For any that are dialogue, break those out into dialogue beats
Then you just need to convert that into prose and you're done
It's that easy

I've never heard of a vet that doesn't do euthanasia. There's a lot of things that can and will be done to save a human but not a pet so putting them down is pretty common if it's considered a hopeless case or even extreme / uncertain / expensive case. And if the dog's cancer is really that bad then this would actually qualify. In fact, cancer being a 'right now or she's gonna die' thing sounds strange to me too. Cancer's usually either a slow build or so fast that it's too late by the time you catch it. Honestly, I think in reality MC decision to euthanize would be considered understandable though obviously his uncaring attitude around it would still be strange.
>>
>>25540984
The writing is clumsy.

Your rhythm/flow is off. The dialogue doesn't bounce back and forth consistently, sometimes the same speaker talks twice and its confusing (or you fucked up linebreaks). You also go a full page without any "Leon said/Vet said", in a lengthy dialogue. Just put in a few more speaker actions just so that the reader doesn't get too lost in the dialogue. "I don't do euthanasia" who the fuck is even saying that? The flow is noticeably poor even on the first page, before the dialogue. You clumsily enter a flash back, if you're suddenly doing a flash back use the past perfect tense. And then the flashback ends in an equally clumsy way. Even the first paragraph is grating, just zero flow between all the similes and metaphors. Its genuinely impressive how tough to decipher this relatively simple writing is.

And the dialogue itself, the doctor and the main character sound exactly the same. The doctor isn't very professional, nor does he sound like he even cares for the dog. Most vets will complement the dog and love animals (that's why they chose the career path of vet), this vet has the same apathy the protagonist does. Just asks curt questions, gets curt responses, poor usage of ellipses, zero emotion anywhere, whoever the fuck is talking no one knows when you keep fucking the speaker up. Also why the fuck are you suddenly referring to the dog as 'her', when you had consistently called it 'the dog' in page 1. Keep calling it 'the dog', it reinforces Leon's apathy and distance to it. And 'the vet said, holding her engraved collar' was a line so jarring it legitimately made me think the vet was a woman until the very last line. Actually it might even be better for the writing if the vet was a kindly woman, to juxtapose against the callous MC.

Also all vets do euthanasia that's literally both humane and a consistent moneymaker

What's that trope called where near the end of Act 2 (or, beginning of Act 3) the story slows down and the characters seemingly have a breather (or they follow even a sub-plot) before the climax? The closest I can think of describing it is "the calm before the storm" or a "false ending", but the latter is situational.

think of red dead redemption, where you, the player, quietly settle down as Marston thinking you've achieved your goals, or the small detour of L and Light teaming up in death note, or the aftermath of the battle of the Pelennor Fields in ROTK

First I check my outline and visualize the scenes I will write. This is usually just imagination more concrete imagery with some music and some particular sentences I feel are strong for the scene. Then I do a quick revision of the chapter I'm currently on to "warm up". And then I start actually writing the scene.

I use word count to track progress, not "length". I'm fairly accurate about my estimates. So my target is not to "write a lot", but rather, to "finish the first draft".
Along the way I tend to leave notes and comments on things to revise and improve for the next draft, and that's on purpose. I can focus on getting the first draft done instead of polishing every single sentence as I go. I'll leave the polishing for my revision passes.
>>
>>25542020
No, if you said 3 or more I would take you more seriously. I asked because I doubted you even have 1
Probably the biggest plight of aspiring writers is failing to finish their novel or even write consistently. So word tracking is a useful way to enforce a habit

Apparently Spotify is offering indie authors free eleven labs AI audio book versions of their manuscripts.

https://youtu.be/6hgc9ZaMPOg?si=23_EVlCVOXf1uXIT

I would have to see the contract conditions, but if the contract is good it would basically be a additional audience for your book for free with very little effort on your part.
Obviously not as good as getting a proper audiobook done by a professional, but that shit cost a few thousand dollars or signing your rights away to audible.
>>
>>25542100
>but that shit cost a few thousand dollars or signing your rights away to audible.
audible produces your book? i thought it was just a hosting platform like Amazon hosts ebooks
you still need a publisher or to pony up the dough yourself

aside from that: having AI produce your book sounds extremely soulless and I doubt there's much discoverability in that mountain of slop. "bigger audience" doesn't mean you'll actually get those readers. it depends on how the spotify platform works i guess
still soulless either way

Audible has a program where they produce audiobooks, but then they basically own the audiobook version in perpetuity and only pay you like 5% in royalties.
You can also pay out of pocket to produce the audiobook yourself (which cost thosands) and keep the rights to your audiobook, BUT they will only pay you like 20% from sells with a exclusivity contract or 10% for a non-exclusive audible contract.

go pick up a book on style and formatting (e.g. Strunk and White), a couple of how to write guides, a book on plotting (try Romancing The Beat), google the Snowflake Method, and then write a simple story using simple everyday English. start with a 1,000-word story, then a 5,000-word story, then try a 25,000-word (bare minimum for a Newbery if I'm not mistaken) story, then a 50,000-word novella, before attempting a full-fat 100,000-word novel

>Quick revision
In my take you shouldn't. You should just record what is wrong with it, and if it's cross-scene plan out a solution for it on the scene, and move on. You shouldn't revised as you write, but knowing what problems exist in your work is good. Because the problem with fixing prose is that it can eat up a lot of time for little gain. Especially in your case with 1h/day: you shouldn't spend that budget on problems that will more than likely be changed down the line.
>>25542010
I never got the buzz around word count as a measurement in progress, beyond making sure the book is in the right ballpark of words. Scenes is a much more natural point for me. I write a scene or two everyday: sometimes I get through them quickly and have them 800 words. Othertimes they can become 2.5K word beasts. But the important part is that the scene itself tells a story, from beginning to end. Why do I wanna stop in the middle just because I hit 1000 words?

Elisa Dupont, the Lady of Birmingham, stared at the highwayman, her bosom heaving, her heart pounding in her chest, her flintlock dueling pistol ready to put a bullet clean between his eyes . David Vincent, the infamous Black Knight, the most wanted man in England and France, smiled. He was not nervous. He was never nervous when faced by beauty. The woman's anger and rage excited him.

"I'm sorry about your husband my lady," he said mischievously, "but it was a fair fight."

"A fair fight?" she gasped. "You shot him in the back!"

"I never did, but we shall come to that later," he winked at her.

She raged. Yet, even in her anger, she felt something else welling up inside her. A pain even worse than grief, a reality that has punished women since the dawn of time. Love. Elisa was in love with a murderer. Her husband , bad man that he was, lay not yet cold at her feet and already she was in love with this black-hearted killer.

The feelings were too much for her. She would never admit them to anyone. Vincent, with his infinite reserves of cunning, saw these truths written on her face, instantly, and knew everything, entirely. He smiled.

This smile angered her and she decided at that moment, that rather than give in to love, she would fight it. She would destroy David Vincent in order to stop loving him. She looked calmly at her gun.

"I'm afraid, Mr. Vincent, that I can forgive many things in a man, but shooting people in the back is not one of them, ” she said, calmly.

Yet just at that moment, the moment of truth when a man and a woman stand before each other, there was a shout from outside. Both the widowed lady, and the handsome highwayman, looked at the door.

"This is Her Majesty's Police Force," said the voice.

It was, of course, the Spider. The dogged, soulless embodiment of all that would crush a person's spirit. The King's worst enforcer. The most hated and feared man in all of England.

Hello frens, what do you think of these 3 paragraphs detailing (half) a fight scene? Do you have a clear image of what's happening (even without prior context of the scene, setting etc) and is there any confusion generated?

You're still working on this? Why doesn't it end already? Other than that it reads fine. Very generic fantasy. You also don't need the azarian prepared for another strike, then jump back to sarlesh dove. If you want to keep it strictly in sarlesh POV, it should be something like

>She would destroy David Vincent in order to stop loving him.
This feels like the sort of thing that runs through the head of a man who's about to murder his ex-wife, very masculine in contrast to the pulpy feminine whims thus far. And it then falls flat, given that she doesn't actually do anything and seemingly gets rescued by outsiders.
Feels like it'd be more dynamic if the scene actually flipped away from wanting to kill him, having her about to succumb then being interrupted.
>>
>>25543832
You could flip it, have the protag get a seemingly clean victory and watch the villain die, only to have it ripped away when the adrenaline wears off and he realises he's been mortally wounded himself.
Or make both wounds clear simultaneously. Sort of leap into it as if the protag has a plan to kill the villain and get out clean, only for the reader and villain to be shocked by the brazen kamikaze. So the villain falls due to underestimating the protag's attack as emotional foolishness rather than self-sacrificial cunning.
