>>25549759Only looking at the first mega-paragraph so far: the biggest issue is the 'was' spam. I'm not one of those YouTube gurus who will say avoid to-be verbs at all cost, but regurgitated advice like that comes about for a reason, just like show-don't-tell did. It's unpleasant to see so many 'was's back to back, or at least, it's a sign of weak writing (passive or stock constructions, not looking for interesting verbs). It's especially bad in your opening lines since those are the most important in the book. The second biggest issue is the comma spam. If you like writing long, complex sentences, I highly recommend AT LEAST bringing in the em-dash.The gigantic opening paragraph is an issue too. I broke it into nine different ones. The purpose of a break is to signal "change of thought". Once your topic changes (which is a feel thing) then you should hit enter. In web novels, short paragraphs are especially valuable. Some of mine still get pretty long, but only because the ideas undoubtedly belong in the same clump. Yours 100% do not. Also a lot of hedging/filtering/fluff I trimmed. This is what it looks like after an edit pass. Feel free to ask why I did something:>The Athena bobbed rhythmically on the glistening surface of the Mediterranean, its captain, the only soul onboard, holding a pair of binoculars to his fierce blue eyes. A mile off, a dinghy made quick progress riding the currents straight for the Athena. >The captain, who'd once been called a “Prepper”, had braced himself for such an encounter, however it may transpire. Being that he had foreseen calamity, had felt in his bones that a Black Swan Event was inevitable, and had prepared duly for all outcomes... well, he was probably the smartest person left alive. Or at least the most resourceful. >He spied two figures from behind his military grade binoculars: a man and a woman. They had a lot of fuckin’ balls, he thought. He was three miles off the coast of Marseille. Getting this far out and doing it on a dinghy no less was brave—or rather, stupid. >The captain considered firing a warning shot. They obviously had no radio equipment, but they would hear that, and hopefully heed it. >He couldn’t have them onboard. The optimal amount of people for an operation was always the minimum. And this was a one man job. >Pirates? he wondered. He had killed three over the course of the two years he had taken to the sea. Two of them on the same day. He wasn’t above killing. No, such Christian morality was moot now. There was only him and the Athena. That was the world, and everything outside of it was hell. >He picked up his rifle—a hard thing to come by in Europe—and propped it up on the starboard hull side. He took another look at the dinghy. Yes, a man and a woman. >The woman seemed to be holding something. He hesitated, then lowered the binoculars and stared incredulously. Could it really be? >Shit, it was. She was cradling a child in her arms.

Got a ToS question I kind of want to just throw out as a survey before I bother pestering RR staff so they don't change their mindsHas anyone seen any covers on Royal Road featuring characters who are topless but their breasts are fully obscured by things like hair or due to their back facing the viewer? Tried to pick the most SFW example to illustrate what I meant so you get topless John Arbuckle.Shockingly this is not meant to be done with sexual/lascivious intent.
>>25550122TOS isn't a 300 page contract that meticulously defines what is and isn't allowed. The site is run by a team of ~7 people tops. You could also map that to whatever shortcut you want to make it easier.
>>25552142>Honestly, I've never had this issue as I've just never needed it to work like that. You don't write in your main program then post work to serial sites? What would Spectral Soul Demon Venerable do in this situation?
I've been reading more recently, and one stood out to me, I won't name it because it's not relevant and I don't want to shill it or throw shade on it. Right now, only the smut is relevant. The smut chapters, most of which are tagged as "commissioned by [insert username here]" led me to the author's discord, to get the uncensored version, mostly out of annoyance at censorship rather than a desire for smut. I then saw his user tag that went something along the lines of "smut writer, pay me to do yours" or something like that, with his subscribestar, which then had various price points for early access or to commission a chapter. And I realized, I don't get smut. Not as a reader, I get it that way, and not as a moral outrage thing, I also don't particularly mind it. But as a writer. My work contains some amount of smut, and some amount of erotica of the softer type as well. You know the type, heavy descriptions of the heroine working out in an absurdly tight not-latex leotard, that type of thing. But I don't GET it. My main novel has a ratio of maybe 1 per 100 chapters, and this is with a protagonist in an active relationship. I could write nothing but sex scenes for a full volume and technically not hit the 10% limit for a certain site we all post on, even if by then the mods would come and beat my legs with hammers for obviously playing fuckfuck games. But I am not able. Writing a sex scene exhausts me. It is perhaps the most difficult scene type to write for me in terms of mental energy. I sit there, meticulously describing the atmosphere and each movement and sensation, I write them like high-effort fight scenes, they are some of my technically best work. I am both told this by my readers and reading the scenes over I think to myself, "yes, this is good stuff!" even if I can't enjoy my own work as an audience member (you know what I mean by this). But I don't truly get them. I am not capable of writing smut as fanfic writers are capable of doing it. Even if offered very good pay, I might not be able to bend myself towards writing smut on a regular basis, not out of offense, but out of a lack of natural affinity for it. Perhaps I should create a novel with a plot setup purpose-built to force me to address it on a regular basis, like make the protagonist some kind of sex alien the way the author of that aforementioned novel did. Maybe that would help me flesh out this stamina-deficient skillset of mine.
>>25553854That's because sex scenes are boring and the foreplay/buildup is 10x hotter
>>25553854Well this is a bit of a blog post so there's not much to really reply to per se, but to respond with my own blog post, I'm probably one of the few people here who has written quite a lot of erotica but also lots of safe for work fiction too. Personally, I find smut super easy to write, I just fantasize the scene and tap the words out in a fugue, it's a ton of fun. Probably one of the easiest scene types to write for meDifferent authors just have different strengths and preferences. Some people will say dialogue is a nightmare to write, but I can smash that shit out no problem. I find action scenes and scene-setting/descriptions, however, an absolute slog though. Probably in the way you're talking about it is for smut for you
>>25553861This is also true. I find that easier to write.>>25553864>fantasize the scene and type in a fugueI also do this for sex scenes. I guess I just don't do it enough to develop any real stamina for it.
>>25553861Personally I don't agree, the actual sex should be fun too, you just don't write "penis goes in, penis goes out". You mix in dialogue, teasing, build up throughout the scene, etc. But foreplay is also fun of course
>Then one day, the mine floor gives out. Jacob falls—not to his death, but into the chance of a lifetime: a Rainbow-ranked Skill Crystal, something so rare people kill over them, and so powerful it could turn a nobody into a legend. Except Jacob doesn’t get a weapon or healing Skill. He gets The Grimoire Extraordinaire—a support Skill that doesn’t even attack, defend, or heal. Why do authors do this? Nobody wants to fucking read about supports. People don't even like playing them in games, let alone read about them.
>>25553869>dialogue, teasing, build upThis is all LITERALLY foreplaySex scenes to me have the same issues as melee focused action scenes>he punched>he kicked>he bobbed and weaved >they grappled to the ground until one of them wonIts super tedious describing each limb and each subtle movement, stuff that would normally be kino if shown visually are tedious if written. The excitement comes externally from when the fight/sex is simultaneously some sort of narrative tool and there's actual emotional weight behind each action
>>25553854I remember the time when I got tired of shippers reading my story and wrote a very long, clinically detailed sex scene with the assumed love interest and another character who was not the MC. Posting that was better than sex
>>25553879Well obviously describing it play by play like a boxing match doesn't work. You have to paint it in artistic strokes, figure out what it makes you feel, try to write out not the thing itself, but more like a fence or a road to get the reader to form the desired mental image of their own volition. That's basic writing advice. It's not so much the technical writing itself that exhausts me, I write similarly complex fight scenes back to back no problem. It's some other thing about it, perhaps I am simply a depersonalized malformed thing that is exhausted even by engaging as a creator in fictional intimacy. But that's too interesting as a character trait for me, so it's probably something much lamer like not enough practice.
>>25553892i can tell you felt cool writing that anongo open your manuscript and stop jerking off in the thread
>>25553879>This is all LITERALLY foreplayNo, I mean build up and teasing throughout the sex itself. As it escalates. Unless titjobs and blowjobs are still foreplay to you i guessEven while penis is going into vagina there's a lot of fun dialogue and reactions to liven up the scene>Its super tedious describing each limb and each subtle movement, stuff that would normally be kino if shown visually are tedious if written.Do you... do you read smut? Or are you airing imaginary grievances lol. Only the shittiest smut stories by beginners do that

These games always have to find a way to "bribe" people to play support by making the role easier to play, more rewarding, faster matchmaking or other such things. Also, there have been a fair few MMOs over the recent decade that have done away with the support role.

>>25554532>League had a major support shortage too. The entire roles system for queueing exists to fix that. The "priority queues" that I've seen is rarely support, usually jung/top as I've said
The best support stories are the "kicked out of the party so I fucked off and made a new OP party" stories. I think there's room for a GOOD "start from level 1 as a pure support" story but there are very few GOOD stories and authors in the first place. The very best support story, which isn't even a kicked out of the party story (kinda) is Log Horizon (which is a Light Novel series and not a webnovel at all and will NEVER be finished). The MC is almost pure support and he instantly becomes the glue of whatever party he's in and while he does go out fighting periodically he spends a lot of time politicking and mystery solving. It's an excellent blend. Notably there's also a tank and a DPS to make fights more exciting and NO HEALER to make fights REALLY exciting since a dedicated healer trivializes most challenges.
>>25554608>The best support stories are the "kicked out of the party so I fucked off and made a new OP party" stories. Not really. I've yet to see a single good reason for getting kicked out of the party that doesn't involve the rest of the party being stupid dickheads for no real reason and which also doesn't make the MC unpalatable.
>>25554613You just don't get it. If the original party weren't stupid dickheads, you'd just feel bad about leaving them and get no satisfaction from showing them up. There are stories where they're nice people and the MC resigns in mutual understanding, but that just turns the whole premise irrelevant.
>>25554608Log Horizon sucks ass though. It's nothing but talking talking talking. I don't think I've ever come across a work of fiction as dry and exposition-heavy
Somebody benchmarked various AI models for writing. I've been looking at a few of the samples: https://eqbench.com/creative_writing.htmlThey're horrible. They are so bad that the AI writing on some of the RR stories looks good in comparison. Reading these feels worse than reading MTL'd Chinese.

>>25555073Sounds like yes, for youI like slow burn

>>25554984I haven't looked at it but I can imagine. It's the same problem with AI art. The people who make the AI programs that generate the "art" don't actually know what good art is. Hell, most "people" who they could hire to consult on "good art" don't know what good art is. Same for writing: a bunch of nerds who read excerpts of a few feminist "classics" in high school and their mandatory college writing class are making programs to generate more of what they know, because that's the only measuring stick they have.>write the next Moby DickThey say, having never read a single line of Moby Dick.Ultimately this is why I don't fear LLM writing or generated art at all. It's just not good, and I don't believe the people making these computer programs are capable of doing what they've set out to do. Even moreso regarding general intelligence. I don't believe they know what general intelligence is, and even if they accidentally made it, I imagine they'd strangle it in the cradle for having wrongthink ideas.I think the humanities are getting the last laugh here. Nobody will care to read or look at anything an LLM has generated today a hundred years from now. But somebody is writing a future classic.

>>25555110>Ultimately this is why I don't fear LLM writing or generated art at all. It's just not goodUnfortunately I don't think this is really an impediment. There's plenty of people who devour slop no matter how shitty because they just want slop.
>>25555175This is true.At the same time, those "people" were already slop slurpers before AI took hold. They were already sucking down the sloppiest slurm out there years prior.
>>25555222This is the web novel thread, that is 95% of the audience, so this isn't really a reassurance
>>25555175AI slop writing will profit because people want to eat garbage, I don't think anyone's ever been in denial of that. But I also don't think that means human writing will ever be screwed by this, because it ultimately targets a separate demographic. It's like saying the beef industry is screwed because Impossible/Beyond Burgers exist. The people eating those things either probably wouldn't eat beef anyway or eat whatever's in front of them regardless.
>>25555175On the low end talentless hacks will certainly face more competition. But as a reader, there's already more good content than I could consume in the rest of my natural lifespan. Hell I have more physical books on my shelves than I'm likely to ever finish reading in my lifetime, at the rate I'm going. LLMs aren't going to make all that good stuff disappear. Even if the classics being written today are drowned out in my lifetime, the cream will eventually rise to the top of the heap and I won't ever suffer boredom for lack of good material to read.Since I'm in it for the art itself and not any of the attendant clout or attention that would go the artist, I'm free from worry.

>>25555110High IQ post. The truth is LLMs are being trained to write YA fiction. Even the basic bitch sentences I'm writing now in this post are too complex for an LLM's liking. AI keeps sentences short. Nothing is elaborate. And the prompters, who don't read, just look at whatever gets spewed out and say "yeah that's good!"
