>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

Writing isn't about creativity, excellence, innovation or competence.
It's about pain tolerance.
You simply haven't earned an edit before you haven't put at least 2500 words to paper. Once you've done that you may edit for 30 minutes. Then it's onto the next 2500 words.

It's basically just trolling. And in any case, the posted sample IS perfectly fine. Despite the troll continuously fishing for replies by spamming it in every thread, there's a reason the fiction is near the top of the rankings on royal road.

I actually meant novelists lauded for their prose. Charles Dickens wrote MORE than most web novelists, or at least equal to.

Do you guys think an isekai'd programmer could be an interesting premise if it's written by an actual programmer? I've seen this premise before, but either the author doesn't know anything about programming or they never include anything about it. The character usually ends up acting very un-SWE-like. They rarely systematically analyze things, never do any math, try to use algorithms to drive or even use mathy/programmery language like "function", "variable", "type" etc. I've read multiple programmer MC stories, but I've not seen someone reference the traveling salesman problem.

Even the famous Chinese Three Body Problem is basically a misunderstanding of what the Three Body Problem is. You can always just simulate the movement of the planets, you don't need an analytical solution. Somebody who understands math even a bit would know this.
>>
>>25560081
No because most readers wouldn't understand it. Maybe something more approachable like analyst or scientist.
I saw a story about some magic academy femc that's a scientist and they do experiments but I think the story is AI.
>>
>>25560081
>Do you guys think an isekai'd programmer could be an interesting premise if it's written by an actual programmer?
no. (I would read it though)
>>
>>25560081
> You can always just simulate the movement of the planets, you don't need an analytical solution.
And the author knew this. He also knew, like all the best authors, when to ignore facts, science, and realism if they get in the way of telling a good story.

Also you're not completely correct with that statement. N-body problems (for N > 2) are inherently chaotic which means you can't accurately simulate all cases since they are highly dependent on the precision on the initial conditions. In general you'd need to constantly update the measurements to correct for errors.

> Do you guys think an isekai'd programmer could be an interesting premise
I have strong doubts it'd work. Coding in media always comes across as boring af. What is it about your premise that would make it interesting and fun to read?
>>
>>25560081
>Even the famous Chinese Three Body Problem is basically a misunderstanding of what the Three Body Problem is. You can always just simulate the movement of the planets, you don't need an analytical solution. Somebody who understands math even a bit would know this.
Did you read Cixin Liu's book? The problem was that on the scale of building up a civilization that could survive a planet-wide catastrophe from the unstable orbit of three different suns (hence the name Tri-solarans), they did need an analytical solution to the mathematical three body problem. Most of Tri-solaran history was building up civilization based on a guess, and then getting wrecked somewhere along the tech tree by the suns either all fucking off and plunging the planet into an ice age, or the suns getting too close and scorching the surface.

Of course it's all a bit silly when you realize that's what's going on towards the end of the book, but it's spooky as you don't know what's going on at first, and it feels satisfying when the truth is revealed. Then it immediately goes back to silly when their technology made it to god level anyway, and they're just planning an invasion of Earth because uh... why not.

The problem with a programmer MC is more along the lines of how that interfaces with other people. It could work as a mystery novel, figuring out mysteries due to bugs/malware in code. It could perhaps work as a story about a consultant who gets wrapped up in drama. But it needs to be about people. Shounen-style punching or swordsmen MCs work easily BECAUSE inherently they go around punching or slashing at other people, and the problems are constructed to be conducive to that sort of solution in the first place. The problems in Azarinth Healer ultimately come down to bad guys and monsters who can be punched to death. Or look at Beware of Chicken: many of the problems in the setting JUST SO HAPPEN to be solvable by farming and forming a bond with an earth spirit (and then there's also characters that punch and slash to entertain the action fans).

So is it possible? Yes. Whether YOU can make it work and be entertaining will be a test of your skill as an author. Good luck!
>>
>>25560096
For my purposes programmer is more like a (bad) scientist or (bad) mathematician. I just picked programming because it's pretty common in the modern world.
>>25560097
Why do you think it wouldn't work for most readers?
>>25560102
>Also you're not completely correct with that statement. N-body problems (for N > 2) are inherently chaotic which means you can't accurately simulate all cases since they are highly dependent on the precision on the initial conditions.
I don't think I'm that inaccurate. It being chaotic doesn't really change things. Simulations aren't exact, so you'd need to update them anyway, but things on the scale of solar systems operate at time frames that you could accurately predict things decades, centuries, and millennia in advance. NASA has done multi-year gravity assists that required pretty accurate understanding of the motion of planets in our solar system (which obviously is an n-body problem).
>I have strong doubts it'd work. Coding in media always comes across as boring af. What is it about your premise that would make it interesting and fun to read?
I didn't think of adding actual programming into the story, just more analytical thinking. Maybe some use of algorithms. Binary search, Dijkstra's algorithm, bubble sort. Stuff like that.
>>25560111
>they did need an analytical solution to the mathematical three body problem.
No they didn't. An analytical solution is exact. They don't need a magical algorithm that can tell them where the 3rd sun will be in 500 million years, they need a way to tell what happens in the next 100 years. They can do that by simply simulating the movements of the 3 stars and planet. They can continuously update the model.

The Solar system is a chaotic system too, yet we can predict the motions of the planets very well. Centuries in advance. I think this JPL one is like 500 years in advance: https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/tools/orbit_viewer.html
>>
>>25560081
I wrote a story that discusses physics a bit without even any math. 99% of readers get filtered and the 1% who can keep up are autistic nitpickers who are there just to say you didn't use the most accurate words or didn't go deep enough and post walls of text to "correct" you, and you don't want that audience.

yes, which is why we aren't there
>>
>>25560081
What stories have you seen with the programming premise? I think while conceptually nice, programming is fucking boring. What is better storytelling?

>I created a telekinesis fast communication network but instead of using this SIMPLE distance heuristic, let's delve into how it's likely non-optimal for some edge cases and figuring out the optimal solution would take ages (P!=NP btw) so I just mentioned that because holy shit I'm insufferable
>>
>>25560148
> Simulations aren't exact, so you'd need to update them anyway.
Not strictly true for all simulations.
> on the scale of solar systems operate at time frames that you could accurately predict things decades, centuries, and millennia in advance
The book merely took the extreme case of not being able to predict on daily/weekly/monthly time scales.

I disagree. Again, did you read the book? Tri-solaran development was set back over and over and over again even when they got lucky with stretches of a few thousand years at a time. It was like a Noah's flood situation over and over. Eventually they spent an entire civilization making the collapsed supercomputer sophon thing because they realized Earth was habitable and conquerable. But it's inevitable that eventually the suns will go fucky wucky again and send them back to the starting line.

So up until that point, it would benefit the Tri-solarans to have an analytical solution to the three body problem so they could know when to invest hard into building civilization to eventually flee their solar system. Once they found out how close Earth was and that they had a short window in which they out-tech'd Earth before Earth's stability let humans develop better tech without hard civilizational resets, they launched the invasion. They still were hoping for a mathematical solution even when they committed to invasion, but as a fallback strategy and for historical reasons.

Again, they needed better than a rough simulation that drifts off in a few thousand to a million years, especially since during a hard reset all their tech to make the precise measurements necessary for simulation would get destroyed and they'd have to rebuild from scratch. They really did need a mathematical solution (which doesn't exist, sucks for them). This is what forced them inevitably into a fight with humans over Earth and then became the basis for the following two books in the series that get even weirder.

I literally opened a random chapter and I found this verbatim:
>The door shut behind them with a soft finality that implied the room had seen many such chastisements and expected more. The tea they were served was better than anything Alric had had so far, steam curling lazily from the cups as if in no hurry to be consumed. Alric insisted Seren sit rather than stand behind him and drink as well, which she did with the air of someone adding this to a mental ledger.

This is actually how you can tell that it probably isn't AI. It's not that repetitive anymore. Repetitive phrasing is not an AI-specific issue. I have to fight it constantly. Whenever I go into a flow state and shit out prose, I have to go over it and check for repeated phrase shapes in the same paragraph. Personally I've let go of "AI" as any kind of pejorative and just focus on quality. In the reverse, I perceive it and human produce garbage as the same "regular trash." And it's been working out great for me.
Whether some idiot prompts a pile of garbage or the same idiot handwrites a pile of garbage doesn't change how I don't value it at all. I just step aside and focus on what's good. That said I do blanket avoid anything labeled AI. If it ever produces anything good, I'm sure someone (whom I know personally) will let me know and have a convincing argument.
>>
>>25561322
>Personally I've let go of "AI" as any kind of pejorative and just focus on quality.
People don't say something is bad because it's AI but because it's by AI, it tends to be bad. In the rare cases where it's readable, it's because the author rewrote practically everything, which effectively means it's not really AI anymore.

I'll stillt ake badly written amateur fiction over soulless lore ipsum that means nothing and goes nowhere, only superficially copying a language.

This book is the ultimate anti-hype.
You have all these plot threads that appeared and resolved themselves in the most anti-climactic way possible. Characters that were introduced and faded into the background. Setups that went absolutely nowhere. And, of course, an MC (author) that’s more concerned about flexing that he went to med school than telling a story with proper arcs.
It’s like a roller coaster climbing way up high, only for the passengers to take the world’s dullest elevator down.

That said, next chapter when?

We should all take a page from the Koreans.

A room that had heard its fair share of scolding.
Click.
The door shut softly.
Sip.
“Mm. Good tea.”
Alric savored the steam curling lazily past his face. Without turning, he addressed the cold woman standing behind him.
“You should try some.”
“It wouldn’t be proper, my lord.”
“Neither is refusing your employer so heartlessly. Please, I insist.”
“…”
Seren’s gaze flicked to the servant waiting at a discreet distance. She made a mental note to give her lord an earful later.
She dropped into the chair opposite him.
The aroma hit her at once, warm and faintly sweet. She hated to admit it, but it smelled wonderful.
Sip.
“Well?”
“…Good.”
Alric’s gloating laughter followed her admission.
Make that two earfuls.

I guess i'll ask here since its either this or ask an AI

Im trying to write, as the local 4chan writers call it, a slop story (LitRPG) and need help with the worldbuilding

I was thinking of taking part the Solo Leveling premise and have portals open all over the world and pour monsters from there, right in the middle of cities and such, except this time guns are a perfectly valid responce and the System™ accomodates for them the same way they would an archer class. Missiles and other weapons work just fine too with the problem being they don't scale the same way magical weapons with time-tested Classes do. Mana also interferes with delicate electronics, as it often does, but the change is gradual, maybe two decades of decline before everything with a modern microchip stops working forever, and rather than throwing them back to the stone age, technology takes a couple steps back. Computers become slower and occupy more space, satelites are imposible to set up properly in the forceable future (let's just say mana fucks with the connection, idk) and just about everything with a computer chip needs to be replaced or redesigned to be more rugged. Older cars, simple electronics like fans and work just fine.

The ocean and places with concentrated untouched wildlife (like the Amazon jungle) change to be more dificulty to traverse due to mutated animals appearing and attacking people. Comunication with other continents is slow and trade imposible unless its under heavy escort.

Now knowing all of this crap, how do you think the diferent countries fall apart? Do they turn their guns towards their neighbors right after dealing with the monsters invasion? Do they fall appart due to not having enough manufactury capabilities or resources on their own? Do they have too many contradictions and split into smaller factions?

And most importantly, how do play it off without showing my "power level"? If i say an isolated Israel nukes his neighbors and gets genosided in return, will people in general call me out as anti-semite or racist? Is there a way to soften the blow?
>>
>>25562059
How does it effect sea travel? The Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean and Strait of Malacca are hugely important since the bronze age. If China loses Gulf oil access they are relatively more fucked than others.
Most small countries would fall apart or wall themselves in and the big boys with large standing armies would go full martial law and either also lockdown or try for land grabs since the ability to proxy and interfere is diminished or gone.
>Israel
As long as you also show how fucked many other countries are nobody is going to think that's too crazy.
>>
>>25562059
This is why I don't write stories set in the real world. I mean, you have a global audience. If you post on RR, there's a high probability that people from the countries you mention are reading and they can see clearly how far from reality your story likely is, and they'll probably want to argue about it. You have to become an expert on the culture, history, society, and military of 200 countries or risk offending somebody, and that's just not happening. Nobody will be having any fun. There's a reason the gook stories usually just stick to Korea and only vaguely allude to what's going on elsewhere.
>>
>>25562091
I agree, though obviously as we all know the Koreans will include the pernicious Japanese getting BTFO by the righteous Korean protagonist.

>>25562059
I guess if there's any way to make it work, either do as the Chinese do ("Eagle Nation" on "Blue Star") or set it in an alternate history sort of thing. And make it clear that it's an alternate history in the description because otherwise you're going to get a barrage of "well, actually..." shitstirrers.
>>
>>25562122
Blue Star is used because of censorship work around not because they're worried about what gweilo will think.
>>
>>25562151
They don't worry about what gweilo think when they're too busy worrying about the Party thinks, but the underlying problem is the same.

The line between reality and fiction has become too blurred for people. 20 years ago, you could blow up the white house for fun and joke about the french being experts at surrendering. Today, no one would even smile. Everything is viewed through the left/right social-political goggles and serious business.

Going alternate history might be the best course
Im thinking "Soviet Russia never fell", "The cold war never stopped" and "9/11 and the subsequent globohomo policies never happened"

Thanks for asking here where you have better odds of getting human feedback.

>Mana also interferes with delicate electronics, as it often does, but the change is gradual, maybe two decades of decline before everything with a modern microchip stops working forever,
I like this idea, and there's an easy way to explain it: magic is affecting smaller, more compact electronic circuits first. From 3nm chips up gradually to 7, 15, 20 and so on, meaning newer chips go bad then older chips, until some point where you want to stop, maybe even all the way to vacuum tube transistors. Long distance communication can fall back to dial up internet or even telegraphs.

>Now knowing all of this crap, how do you think the diferent countries fall apart?
There's a few ways to do this, most people aren't in the know about geopolitics enough to predict which states collapse and which ones just go more authoritarian and deal with the problem competently. So I'd say it just depends on how you want your plot to go. My instinct is that developed countries would handle it fine, with Japan (because familiarity with isekai and modern fantasy), USA (because second amendment), and China (because authoritarian) all handle such a problem competently. Europe would get ravaged then organize and start being competent. Africa and underdeveloped Asia would see the collapse of modern states but the rise of warlords. Australia should get rekt. New Zealand should go bunker mode. Latin America should collapse but then Americans should spill out and colonize them because guns and manifest destiny, perhaps even against the wishes of the government. Canada can either go Europe mode or be colonized.

>Do they turn their guns towards their neighbors right after dealing with the monsters invasion? Do they fall appart due to not having enough manufactury capabilities or resources on their own? Do they have too many contradictions and split into smaller factions?
I would say you can plot this however you want and readers will accept it.

>And most importantly, how do play it off without showing my "power level"? If i say an isolated Israel nukes his neighbors and gets genosided in return, will people in general call me out as anti-semite or racist? Is there a way to soften the blow?
Just don't mention Israel. Like, at all. If you must, play it as a mystery. Nukes were used, it's unclear who did it, everyone's claiming something different, but what is clear is that Muslim high level fighters invaded Israel and took it over, and the strongest Israeli fighters moved somewhere else and stabilized that region, there was a huge refugee crisis, and maybe they're all butthurt and fighting while monsters ravage the area. Basically full descent into chaos. But I would ignore the middle east if it were me.
>>
>>25562059
>not showing power level

The return of magic caused certain apocalyptic cults to believe their specific end of the world was happening. This led to a thermonuclear exchange which that annihilated a number of major cities, most of the middle east, and parts of eurasia.

There. Nuke Israel, India, whatever else you want. Just be vague about it.

I've finished the romance arc of sss suicide hunter. I didn't think it was a bad arc like people said. The only problem was that the transition between Gongja going from "I don't know about love" to "I'm head over heels in love with that woman" wasn't smooth. Besides that, Raviel is great despie clearly being the author self insert waifu and I liked Gongja's guts. It's so rare to find an MC claiming that he is going to make a heroine fall in love with him

I always wanted to make an alt-history based on one of my EU3 MEIOU games. I had a campaign as Roman Empire earlier this year that I toyed with the idea of flipping into a litrpg isekai and the trope of it being a century into the campaign's timeline. Pretty much just the premise that propped up after Max Level Archmage. I've been sleeping on it to focus on my active story sine I don't have a solid plot or even an ending for the alt history one. I was interested in reading Savrola as pointers recently but apparently it's flat-out just terrible.

It's not that everyone hates it. Harem has a pretty large fanbase, mostly on Amazon/KU. The issue is that harem is strongly POLARIZING. People either like it, or hate it, and there's not tolerance in between the two which have formed up into groups.

The important thing is to be very clear up front if Harem is in it or not, to drive away the spergs who haterate when they think they see it coming. Or just accept that loud retards will whine if you don't. Most readers are silent, so it's easy to forget, but they are the majority.
>>
>>25563271
The only harem I find tolerable is the 2 girls + 1 dude formula, anything above that means heroines will be fighting for relevancy and the one you liked probably got the least dialogue lines

Unless I reverse the rotation of the planet for no fucking reason and mess up sundown/rise directions in a story where navigation is the mortar between each story brick, my protag wont be able to make a 2000 mile journey southwest while in the middle of the westerlies (which do not blow TO the west but FROM the west). If you were to break it down, what do (you) want from a litRPG? Personally, I look for ones that take themselves seriously, don't have MCs with annoying personalities, and actually fulfill the power fantasy when they promise one.

That's it. It's maddening how many stories fail to meet these criteria.

Ideally I would like the story not to have woke-type stuff in it. Eg don't insist on calling them "craftsperson" and "craftspeople". But this isn't a dealbreaker.

This is less about litRPG and more about web novels in general.
I live only for the satisfying moments when the MC does something insane and the side characters react to it. That’s probably why I gravitate toward less serious stories like Eminence in Shadow, Fake Saint of the Year, Turn Based Swordsman, and the various villainess and young master stories.
My inner twelve year old is happy when seeing stuff like this:

“You can’t touch me. I rule this city!” the pot-bellied mayor sneered, his double chin quivering.
“Is that so?”
I pointed at his left leg.
It vanished.
For a heartbeat, nothing happened. Then blood sprayed across the marble, and the mayor crashed to the floor.
“AAAGH! My leg! My leg! What the hell did you do to my leg?!”
His screams echoed through the hall. His guards stood frozen, weapons half-drawn. Not one of them moved as I strolled toward their fallen boss with unhurried footsteps.
I leveled my finger at his forehead.
“W-wait! I’ll give you anything! Money, land, anything! Just please…”
“Too late.”
Teleport.
His head, and only his head, vanished, sent twelve miles away to the town square. By now it was probably rolling to a stop in front of the town hall.
The body slumped. Blood spurted from the severed neck and spattered across my mask. I peeled it off and let it fall.
Silence settled over the room, so complete I could hear the blood dripping onto the floor.
I turned to the rest of them.
“M-Monster!”
“Run! Run away!”
Without a second thought, the so-called elite guards dropped their weapons and fled, trampling one another toward the doors. Only their captain remained.
She was a graceful woman in a knight’s uniform, her hands gripping a silver blade. Her once-prideful blue eyes trembled as they reflected my face.
“Why… Why is it you…?” Those eyes knew me. “…Anon!”
A smile curled across my lips, and I swept into a courtly bow.
“It’s been a long time, sister.”

Just scenes like this + the fallout sprinkled in every few chapters to string me along is all I need.

Yes. Also, void's overused. His thing is more negative space, to put it succintly.

It was always the plan that Wu Hao got a master that he awoke basically by accident, though I hadn't nailed down what that would be until fairly late into this book. Negative space seemed to fit neatly with the master being into arrays and stuff. It's a nice visual metaphor that I can get a lot of use out of, it gives him a fairly distinctive style, and it's not that complicated to explain while also allowing for a good chunk of pseudophilosophical rambling if I need to fill some pagetime.

It depends on your reddit tolerance, frankly. I thought it got worse as time went on and the author pandered to his donors more and eventually dropped it.

It starts off doing clever stuff with story structures and then rug pulls the entire structure with 'lol the universe hates you' and the metapremise for all that and its structure as well as the nature of the universe doesn't make an awful lot of sense. Plus the aforementioned stuff you need a tolerance for.
