Currently slogging through The Expanse.
I'm on book 7, of 10 I think? Anyway the ideas aren't bad. The political stuff is weel thought out and somewhat realistic. But it visibly dropped in quality once a major character left the scene. I'm only reading to see if (unlikely) he appears again at this point. So far it's 8/10 books 1 to 5 and 5/10 for 6 and 7

I also enjoyed it, had no background with SCP but could tell it was several stories stacked on top of each other. Climax was a little disappointing, but it was a clever way to sell a book of short stories as a novel.

Neal Asher's Spatterjay series seems strange enough to keep my attention which is nice. I detect a hint of The Culture influence with the AI-run "Polity" civilization and a tiny bit of Hyperion flavoring with the Shrike-like "Skinner" character thus far but I'm only about five chapters in so its far too early to be certain. I dunno... I think I like it. Sometimes judging a book solely by its cover pays off in interesting ways. Found one of my all-time favorite authors that way actually. Maybe in retrospect this series will become a favorite.

3rded (or 4thed?) for Starship Troopers first. the English is everyman and accessible, it's close-to-fantasy "SF", it's a compelling classic, and it's war and adventure

next try Andy Weir's The Martian. it's adventure rather than war, but it's true "hard" SF as the science is solid.

or go straight to Expanse if you want more war.

Don’t try to be “clever”, try to be funny/humorous. Those are two very different things.

A piano falling on a man walking down a sidewalk is funny. A piano falling and barely missing the dude while he says “well, THAT just happened.” will never be funny.

A comedian once said, “Breasts are not funny. Titties are hilarious. Vaginas are boring. Pussy is hilarious.” Or something to that effect.

Book 2 has some fucked up body horror with the AI entity capturing the locals and making androids out of them.

I suspect Sanderson was always like this but his previous editor would pick up and correct those kind of problems. It's a common complaint that his books took a noticeably drop in quality when his new editor took over. They seem to be too in awe to tell him "no" or "that's bad".
>>
>>25562719
>noooo she is a 21 yo child!
why are they like this
>>
>>25562739
because 21-year-olds are still quite immature and we only forgive immature couples of a similar age because their immaturities cancel each other out, whereas an excessive age disparity increases the likelihood that the older is predatorially manipulating the younger with the benefit of his/her far greater life experience

not saying it's a definite "no, this is wrong" but just pointing out that these things do happen and it is that unspoken and ill-articulated fear that these idiots are thinking of

He says in the intro that he wrote it just as his creative powers were drying up, but didn’t know it yet. Clearly, unconsciously, he did. A good amount of neurotic rambling that explicitly wishes it were Beckett, but it does capture that same sense of ironic resignation that’s satisfying if you’ve put away most of your delusions. But it’s light years shy of Molloy or Hunger in that he’s still too identified with his neurosis. But who’s Molloy anyway.

I just don't find anything about a game of thrones interesting. It was like this when I watched the show too. I just hate how he writes certain characters to basically exist as caricatures or stereotypes. Viserys and Joffrey are just such bad writing. "The bitter exiled prince who will do le anything to get his throne back!" and "Da immature boy king who just does whatever he wants!" Doesn't help that none of the POV characters are interesting too, just as one dimensional except you get more words expounding on their simplicity. "Ahm a Bastard doe! and it make me cry doe!", "Me no likey breaking the rules and norms! Me like family and friends!"

Somebody better tell when this shit gets deep and complicated & why people are so obsessed with it. I never understood it with the show, but the Books are supposed to be 10x better. Is the first book just shit?

I've read it. Here are you trigger warnings, chud.
1. Bisexual main character, with a male preference. Though romance is not a focus. But the main character uses casual sex as a stress reliever. Also, one of the minor characters is gay, and that's a plot relevant.
2. The smartest character in the book is an eccentric middle aged woman who pushes everyone's buttons, and always wins in a battle of wits. She bosses everyone around, and always gets her way in the end.
3. Female soldiers/police exist. This is more relevant to book 2.
4. Psychedelics are used liberally.

Despite these things, the focus of the book is all on the mystery. Not trying to push some strong female narrative. So all considered, I'd give the wokeness a 3/10. You're going to notice the liberal bend, as the author makes no attempt to hide it. But it's not going to get in the way of the story, unless you're one of those people who are 100% adverse to these things.
>>
>>25563365
You have no critical thinking skills if you can't understand why The Beggar King doesn't see the cognitive dissonance when he resorts to begging while listening to the lies told into his ear about how he's entitled to greatness because of his family's legacy.
>>
>>25562905
One of the themes is the old generation passing things on to the newer generations. So basically all of the younger characters are just a reflection of how their parents raised them. Joffrey is evil because his mother is 10x more evil and incompetent. The Starks are good because their parents were good, etc. There are exceptions in which awful parents raise good children, IE Viserys raising Dany. A lot of nature versus nurture
>>
>>25563329
NTA but 15-16 was historically the common age when a girl became "fair game". There are definitely unbalanced power dynamics at play for a significant age gap, but that's also true of class gaps, intelligence gaps, and attractiveness gaps... Basically there's no way to reasonably get to "relationship equality", and other anon is right that it's largely envy driven.
>>
>>25558865
I enjoyed Fall and loved the ending, but it does feel very different from the first.

>>
>>25563378
Stupid and simplistic, "evil" to others doesnt mean poor parent, and "good" to others doesnt mean good parent, human beings can in fact be multiple different things at once, in different contexts.
About as close to retard as the silly notion normies used to have that; Smart in One field should = Smart about almost anything they put their mind to.
Because normies dont understand the world and think it operates as simply and one dimensionally as "one type of all encompassing smart, and the field you choose is just preference".

I'm thinking if I should continue elaborating. Theres the other element or dimension of complexity I didnt even bother to get to because Im starting to become convinced that if you rationalize Joffrey, you're genuinely retarded. And thats the obvious fact that even if we concede that evil being = evil parenting, that shouldn't necessarily = evil child.

There are children who grow up beaten nearly everyday of their childhood and continue it as parents, and children that grow up beaten everyday of their childhood and swear to never beat their child or harm anybody again. Human beings can be complicated, and the times they're not, theres usually a complicated reason why. When you cheat towards the intuitive uncomplicated answer for retards, without a particular enough investigation into the unique and complex factors that would make a child evil, or you choose to prefer the outcome where even the explanation is as simple as "They're just crazy" you are simplifying by choice and saying nothung meaningful about the person or the relation that created the person, because it then becomes an arbitrary coinflip

Literary romanticism
Joffrey is what is he is for many reasons, but in this series, the children of incest don't lead happy lives.
>>
>>25563394
I was just painting it in broad strokes. My point is that the story asks you if this is true with multiple examples, some extreme as Joffrey or the Lord of the Vale, and some more subtle like Tyrion or Davos. Because Joffrey has two siblings that ARE normal and kind, so you inevitably wonder "well what caused Joffrey to be that way?" It is a story about eugenics and divine bloodlines and incestual inbreeding and sibling envy
>>
>>25563418
>Because Joffrey has two siblings that ARE normal and kind, so you inevitably wonder "well what caused Joffrey to be that way?"
Yeah and thats the exact problem. If no deep dive exploration is given, then it just becomes arbitrary, and when a character's personhood is arbitrary it can never be complicated because theres nothing to base it in, nothing to understand, the characters mere value then simply becomes a projection of ones intuitions onto a fictional world so as to circularly and shalloy confirm the biases and preconceptions that underpin those intuitions, never learning or deepening ones understandings of the very features and characteristics the story borrows from real life superficially, because it cannot have any legitimacy otherwise lest its pretended to be real. Something that matters and reflects on real people, else its just a contrived song and dance for retards to be entertained by without every truly thinking about or engaging with.

Books are meant to say something, and without everything I have laid out that makes characters meaningful, it cannot say anything, only appeal shallowly to what you want, therefore never offering anything that isnt just an extension of yourself.

I don't think any of the stark characters are particularly interesting, or daenyrs but obviously tyrion was the big popular fan favourite in the show, i dont remember caring much about him, because he's used in very cringe dynamic with joffrey, sometimes hes the redditors, i mean reader, or watcher's "Boy I wish I could slap that character!" relief character. And other times he's their abandoned puppy to feel bad for in the face of all the fakeness, vileness and brutality.

I hooe tyrion the person, is more interesting than tyrion the representation of what the audience would like to do to the bad characters, and save the day just to be unappreciated by the unfair world, circularly validating their hate for it, and desire for it to change.

You're deluded expectations continue on. It's time to move on to trying to find books outside of genre fiction that approach your platonic ideal of what a book is meant to be.
>>
>>25563463
You are using a lot of words to say that you wished all the mysteries were explained to you
>why is this random side character not deep dived into, he's too shallow!
Because he's a side character. The story isn't an interiority analysis of Joffrey he is just one cog of many. You can only see glimpses and pieces of his mystery, but that's what it is, a mystery meant to be solved

his book is a weird one, because it's about 90% worldbuilding. The world is huge and genuinely interesting, but the characters are typical hard sci-fi fare, in the sense they are mostly there just for the plot to move along. The multiple POV format helps, because you're never stuck with one protagonist for too long. That said, I genuinely enjoy the Celestial faction characters. You can never go wrong with political games in a court where the major players are hundreds or even thousands years old and know they have to coexist despite being heartily sick of each other.

Given that they had a different translator for the second book and that was even worse, I suspect the problem is with the author.

Most of Gurm's characters are just stereotypes with some twist (usually of the grimdark variety). Really, ASOIAF is not that big of a deal, just a big mishmash of older books and other stereotypes, it was simply discovered at the right time by people who didn't know what fantasy meant beyond LOTR maybe (and they even got that one wrong).

What are some examples of an adult fantasy series?
I tried Red Rising, The Will of the Many, The Lies of Locke Lamora and The Name of the Wind, and I'd consider them all YA
