>>25565504can you add tolkien to the list, lol?
>>25565533Not /sffg/, but Pride & Prejudice. I loathed everything about it: the lack of descriptions, the trite conversations, the vapid, spoiled characters who clearly just need to get a job, everybody's lack of interest in anything remotely challenging, the whole package. Ralph Waldo Emerson was right, Austen's novels are unbearable.>Never was life so pinched & narrow. The one problem in the mind of the writer in both the stories I have read, âPersuasionâ, and âPride & Prejudiceâ, is marriageableness; all that interests any character introduced is still this one, has he or she money to marry with, & conditions conforming? âTis âthe nympholepsy of a fond despairâ, say rather, of an English boarding-house. Suicide is more respectable.
>>25565632You should read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies instead. That's /sffg/ approved.

No matter what it is, if it's popular then then there's a much better chance that someone will read it. Quality is a secondary consideration.
>>25565533Honestly, those are probably both of mine as well. I can accept some stinker books here and there from an author, but Burning White was atrocious and the ending, including having L I T E R A L G O D come down from above and stop all the main conflicts while fully healing the main characters and bringing one of them back from death. I have read thousands of books at this point and I have never, and I mean never, been as insulted by an ending of a book than I was with Burning White.SA5 is another one. The quality drop between SA1 and SA5 deserves to be studied for generations. It's not just the quality that dropped, the entire writing style and word useage and everything shifts dramatically to basically be MCU quippy nonsense.
>>25564267What are some examples of an adult fantasy series?I tried Red Rising, The Will of the Many, The Lies of Locke Lamora and The Name of the Wind, and I'd consider them all YA
>>25565756No such thing. Your only chance for truly adult literature that brims with sophistication is to read literary fiction from centuries ago, if not millenia, before we became a world of children. Or, you could put away the make believe world of fiction and join the realm of True Adults by reading nonfiction.

The next book from the Empire of the Vampire guy is called Bastards and is about a fallen angel leading half-demons to save an empire. I feel like this is simply the inverse of EotV, a story about a half-vampire leading semi-virtuous people to save an empire. I think the new one will probably have the same amount of angsty whining against religion.
Just finished Solaris. Good book but annoying protagonist. This passage came out of nowhere though LOL>From the far end of the side passage a huge black woman was coming towards me with an unhurried waddling gait. I saw the whites of her eyes glinting and at almost exactly the same moment I heard the soft slap of her bare feet. She had nothing on but a skirt that glistened yellow, as if it were made of straw. She had massive pendulous breasts, and her black arms were as thick as a normal personâs thighs. She passed three feet from me without so much as a glance and walked off, her elephantine rump swaying like one of those steatopygic Stone Age sculptures found in anthropological museums.>I sniffed the air with flared nostrils. Something was wrong, something was out of place. That was it! Iâd instinctively expected the distinct, repulsive odor of her sweat, but even when she passed a couple of feet from me I hadnât smelled a thing.

I fucking loved DUNE parts 1 and 2, has a lot of differences between it and the book but it's honestly the best adaption of DUNE. it truly captures the "Completely Alien but human at the same time" vibe the book had and I hope Part 3 turns out just as solid. other than the (Herbert) books themselves (and Homeworld) what other Sci-fi books have a similar "Alien but Human" vibe to them?

What are some books where the protagonist is one step ahead of the villains?I finished the Cadwal Chronicles a while ago and enjoyed how the hero is able to deduce what the villains are planning and foil their plans long before they are able to achieve their goals.
>>25567106Sounds like you'd love powerfantasy anime but the power is what normies think is intelligence (magic)Also the answer unironically happens to be The Darkness that comes Before.
>>25567107I wouldn't call it a power fantasy, it is more like the protagonist is savvy enough to not fall in to traps that a normal protagonist would fall into. For example, instead of it being a big twist that an ally is untrustworthy, the protagonist deduces it almost immediately and prepares for his ally's inevitable betrayal, and when the ally does try to betray him he is ready for it and shuts it down.

>>25565504The Dreaming Void - Void #1/Commonwealth #3 - Peter F. Hamilton (2008)The Dreaming Void takes place in 3589, ~1,200 years after Judas Unchained. For most series there wouldn't be much overlap of characters or relevance of prior events. However, this setting has immortal characters, so a few of them are still involved. This can be your first Commonwealth book, though I'd advise against it, if only due to spoilers. The entire trilogy seems to only be about the Void, a cosmological phenomenon similar to a black hole, that has another reality inside. Of the 12 character perspectives, 11 are outside the Void and 1 is inside. The story is predominantly told through 3 viewpoint characters and the rest provide support. The chapters alternate between outside and inside the Void, assumedly for the whole trilogy. Inside the Void is a "fantasy world" of psions with an uneven level of technological advancement. The story isn't evenly split, as the outside/Commonwealth is 66% and the inside is 34%. It's an odd choice because it really does feel like alternating between reading two novels. It's not possible for me to understate that this book is about the Void. Everything revolves around that. This book doesn't have any space battles, nothing is considered all that deeply, and the action scenes are mostly contained to Aaron's perspective. All conflict is about whether the Void is doom or transcendence.Aaron's memories are on a need-to-know basis, and all he needs to know is that he's looking for Inigo. Inigo founded a religion called The Living Dream, in which billions worship the Void, the revelations of which literally came to him in dreams. The dreams are presented as Edeard's chapters, the sole perspective from within the Void, that detail his teenage years. Then there's Araminta, a 22 year old woman whose recent windfall has her become a real estate developer. She also develops a taste for group sex. Unlike Aaron she's simply ignorant about her identity. The trilogy is single story, as it's not at all self-contained and ends on a cliffhanger. If you're not intending to read the trilogy, then it may not be worth it to only read the first book. For me, like the previous two books, this series is about the worldbuilding more than anything else. The Commonwealth is among my favorite settings. The characters are a nice bonus and the plot suffices. Almost all of my personal complaints about the series are no longer present. I didn't like the characters as much and would've preferred that Hamilton chose a different narrative that was fully in the Commonwealth, though I did also enjoy the "fantasy world".Possibly more than any other series I've read, this is carried by its setting in terms of my enjoyment. I love everything about it. I'd even prefer if the entire series was literally nothing other than its exploration. That's a narrow interest and I believe those who don't share it would enjoy this far less.Rating: 4.5/5

This Malfoid thing kind of highlights the curious case that Harry Potter is as a fantasy series. Its draw is its setting, as the plots leave a lot to be desired and the lore falls apart the more you think about it. The worldbuilding is so bad, you don't even realize she is not that good at character work either. It really makes you understand how Harry Potter was a catalyst for so much fanfiction. It's a result of millions of people telling JK to pass the controller.
>>25568191Pagespammer will have to write fanfiction of their imagined ideal book.
>>25568191It's well paced, the characters and setting are vivid and colorful, and the individual book plots are simple but fun. It works because it's a children's series until it's far enough along that anyone still reading is invested, then it turns to YA. Obviously it's not "high literature" but it does a better job of being engaging to younger readers than Narnia and helped millions of children become better readers - and try longer books - than they may have otherwise. Hard to fault it for what it does. The fact Rowling manages to piss off the far left and far right while not giving a shit because she has "fuck off" money is icing on top.
>>25568191>the worldbuilding is so badpeople say this but if there's something HP has in spades, its atmosphereand honestly atmosphere >>> worldbuilding, its the sad truth worldbuildinglets refuse to acknowledge
>>25568210Absolutely true. Nobody actually cares what Aragorn's tax policy is, they just want to feel immersed in the world and for the more autistic, they think a hard and fast set of explicit rules will do that.
Chtorr is so crazy. First it's a sci-fi story about a jungle infested with the Chtorr and then it randomly jumps into a five page tangent about some movie star who got held hostage on live tv, then right back to sci-fi horror.

Just finished The Left Hand of Darkness and it wasn't gay at all. I thought the planet of trans aliens were gonna be freakier and that LeGuin was going to delight in describing their gay sex but they're all straight. The narrator doesn't even fuck the alien he's spends a month in a tent with. I've been mislead about LeGuin.
About to begin a new progression slop.I've been watching chinese dramas recently. And half of them are stories about people obtaining systems and becoming rich or powerful. Or transmigrating into a book, and using their knowledge of it to become rich and powerful. Often with systems included. Still others are about being reborn and using your knowledge of the past to become rich and power. Again, sometimes systems are there too.So now that I'm system slop pilled, I'm searching around for books with similar concepts. I think I'm going to start with "he who fights with monsters". Hopefully it's good.

Deciding to start A Game of Thrones might have been the worst thing I could have done for my motivation to keep reading. It just feels so uninteresting (depthwise) and familiar (interestwise) that my brain has found every excuse to not read it. I don't know what to do, unfortunately you guys are bad at literary criticism so you can't fix my impression with rock solid intelligent counter arguments, all you can do is go "Well Joffrey is evil because HE JUST IS OKAY? AND THATS FINE YOU DONT NEED TO GIVE DEPTH TO EVERYTHING THAT WOULD BE SILLY AND TOO MUCH FOR MY SMOOTH BRAIN" It's unfortunate really, but it gives some perspective on why the series is so popular, the only thing I can't explain is why somebody that seems smart enough like that Preston guy, likes it so much. Must be the theory aspect which is so divorced from the actual writing to become its own independent community thing that It's hard for me to give a series credit for that, It's like those stupid redditors that unironically say shit like "X streamer saved my life!" or "X game changed my life!" they have so little perspective & self awareness that they can't see past the most immediate & loud feelings that circularly validate the very thing they're inclined to believe is so important that they overvalue it even though what changes your life (even positively) doesn't have to be personally valued by you, or you may not even appreciate it because you don't have the capacity to appreciate or understand it. Not to say that a game or streamer can't be valuable, its the exaggerating and the essentializing to the point where those things are no longer what they are. A streamer is never talking to you, never knowing or appreciating you and your personality truly, and vice versa, you dont truly know them. So when you "value" them you're making them out & your relationship to them to be something that its not.All of this is to say, the way I can explain somewhat seemingly smart and respectable people like ASOIAF (until I receive counterarguments or a deeper essay somewhere online as to why its exceptional) is because they make it something that its actually not. Due to an inclination towards some particular framing of the series that constantly underpins hos they interact with it.

>>25569081Joffrey is evil because he is inbred and knows it and has to pretend he is not since birth. That adds a lot of problems for mentality.
>>25569200Close inbreeding does weird things to its offspring. Erratic and unreasonable behavior is common. That's enough to make a person effectively irredeemably evil.
>>25569240Well yes, and in his case it is even worse because he is next in line for the throne but not really because his mom fucked his brother and everyone knows and he knows.Anyway, he is not evil just because, there are clear and well established reasons.

>>25569567Narnia is older and is feeling its age these days - it's still better written (generally) but any of the "real world" parts feel as foreign to modern children as the fantasy parts. His Dark Materials gets too dense and tries to carry multiple plotlines at once, which just doesn't work if you're aimed at the 9+ demographic like Harry Potter is (at least at first). It's a good YA series, I'd put it up there with Sabriel as one of the best written ones, but it's a completely different, apparently smaller demographic.
>>25565844Nah. I know what is good and enjoyable about it, but all the negatives end up substantially outweighting the positives unless your familiarity with the genre leaves you starved for originality, in which case you've already heard enough about it to not need additional recommendations.

>>25565533The Desert Prince by Peter V Brett. It's the first book in a sequel series to his Demon Cycle books, set a couple decades after the last of those books and focused on the next generation of characters. I barely finished the first book and have no desire to continue it, nor even to reread the Demon Cycle because how distasteful this book was. It has soured me entirely on Brett as an author. Though, the signs were already there, because of how completely derailed the Demon Cycle got halfway through its run, with its inordinate focus on cuckolding and rape. Rape in particular is racialized and institutionalized by one of the cultures in the books, and he is inordinately focused on them and begins to make everything revolve around them. Then you have this book, which is centered on an intersexed, interracial protagonist. I honestly don't know how I finished it.

>>25568216It's all about execution. In The Winter King, Merlin's passive income stream is an important plot point because it gives Merlin the freedom to travel around doing wizard/druid stuff, but its importance is indirect and mostly shown organically from the vantage point of the POV character who grows up on Merlin's estate. It's not something that is belabored in tedious info dumps.

>>25570288true, also I already tried an AI summary for the last book of terra ignota, and unfortunately AI is just not smart enough for literary analysis, despite giving it the entire book and like 2 hours for it to process the book, its just horrible at answering specific questions with detail, like a human being who has read a book should be able to.Also Claude just killed any faith I had in him when he just went recursive about my dandelion dynasty lottery critique, and he also couldn't understand my critique of one of the villain politicians. Just too stupid for anything but coding unfortunately. Anything that requires actual analysis and not merely recalling and applying information cleanly
I seriously need to make a decision on A Game of Thrones though. I feel like I haven't given it a chance, but at the same time I've already watched most of the show, and never thought it was good even from season 1. And the theory culture makes me feel like the books are better for the type of brain that doesn't care about art as something to understand, but a toy to solve, like a rubik's cube, I wont deny theres intelligence involved there (depends on my mood) but its not what I see as the point of writing books.I just don't want to give up on another series, I thought of going back to dandelion dynasty, but that talk about AI just reminded me that the stupid AI couldnt even understand and argue against my criticism, so I have no reason to believe in the series. One of the worst things you can do as a writer imo is write a poorly written villain, only retards in here think "Inbred & Raised by bad parents" is "well established reasons for being evil" because theyre stupid and havent read enough philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and history to understand how fucking retarded that is. The retards in here don't understand enough about how human behaviour manifests itself so they do the exact same thing Christians who didn't understand simple things like "socioeconomic factors contribute to crime" do. Create a world that simplifies and reduces human behaviour to something easy to understand: You're just evil.I already explained the flaw with the bad parenting logic and a retard in here still brought it up. No offense but some of you guys are seriously retarded. I shouldn't take it out on you though. I'm just frustrated that I havent read a book in two weeks because A Game of Thrones disappointed me earlier than any other book I have read. I got farther even in WolfBlade and Grace of Kings. Of course neither of those had megapopular tv shows so its not quite an equivalent comparison.
>>25570380You have a brain that refuses enjoyment.
>>25569938sounds like every gene wolfe book tbdesu
>>25570380haven't read far enough into ASOIAF yet, but based on watching the show, it seems like Joffrey is just a run-of-the-mill sadist. we can see this clearly first when Tyrion gifts him a couple whores for his name day and instead of fucking them, he forced one to beat the other to death. so he derives pleasure, perhaps even sexual satisfaction, from seeing others experience pain, and when he gets absolute authority, he finds a limitless outlet for his sadism because there are no shortage of people he can punish for the smallest excuse. there's a very clear reason for him being evil, it might be banal, but it's perfectly valid and plausible one. it's not just "evil for its own sake", and sadism can be in-born, it doesn't have to come from some specific trauma or abuse. some people are just cunts and "you can't cure being a cunt". the formula is basic: sadism + absolute power.i think there's a worse villain in the show, that's much more comically evil i.e. ramsay bolton. he spends like a whole season just torturing theon greyjoy and completely breaking him. and it goes beyond sadism because he plays all kinds of mindgames with him and subjugates him to a slave, it's more complex than joffrey who's just "lol i'll cut off that bard's tongue for writing a shitty song about me" and "i'll show sansa the head of the father on a spike lmao". but idk, i haven't gotten that far in the books and i'm re-watching the show now. i know he's a bastard and yearns for his father's approval, but that doesn't really explain his psychology. he even betrays and kills a bunch of his own people just to play a trick on theon.
>>25570465>>25569938I have read a bunch of gene wolfe and never thought the protagonist was an unreliable narrator other than severian lying about having perfect memory or contradicting himself
>>25570380People are, most of the times, shaped by their environment whether you like it or not. Yes, there are good kids who come from neglected homes, and there are also terrible kids who come from decent parents. But almost all the time, that is not the case. Joffrey simply lost the genetic lottery and being raised as a privileged little shit only made his madness worse. Is that concept really too difficult for you to understand
>>25570481although, i guess you can explain ramsay by the fact that his whole clan is evil. their coat of arms is literally a dude that's skinned alive lol. the boltons are known for being treacherous and cruel, so a lot of that was ingrained through conditioning + resentment about being a bastard and needing to one up everyone else to prove himself.yeah, it all checks out. grrm is a genius. just read the fucking books.
>bro... why is he, like, comically evil? where's my morally grey?

>>25570577Sanderson is kind of hit or miss for me. Gay example, but his first Infinity Blade novella is ass; its sequel, on the other hand, is pretty enjoyable.Of course, this was a licensed work so you could easily say whatever good came of it is from the creator of the franchise, Donald Mustard, rather than Sanderson himself, but you know -- still enjoyable enough.

Could Chtorrians be considered a lovecraftian/cosmic horror monster? Idk, they're kinda cute...
About 60% done with Exodus and I'm legit surprised how good it is. The Zuberi revelation is one of my favourite twists I've read in a long while. For a good chunk of the book it's an innocuous piece of worlbuilding that you absorb with all the other history knowledge, then you start seeing a shadowy pattern between the various events that are going on, and then you get the full weight of the twist from the POVs that were there for the original tragedy. >âAh.â Iuntin-Detlef gazed pointedly at the frieze of faces on the apartment block.>Ualana-Lyon looked up at them again. They were all the same person. The recalcitrant memory finally surfaced from the depths of time where it had rightfully been banished, turning his whole body to ice.>>25570633NTA, but in the books Joffrey is basically just an extremely spoiled child with too much power and no set boundaries. Yes, he was born with some sociopathic tendencies, but he would have been a very different kid if he were raised by Ned for example, rather than Robert and Cersei.
Are there any other sci-fi books like Chtorr where the apocalypse happens but governments still exist and the sci-fi tech co-exists with modern military equipment? It's a nice change of pace from standard post-apoc fiction.
>>25569938Sorcererâs House is definitely by far my least favourite of all the Wolfe I've read. I think that he peaked early in his career and a lot of his later stuff is quite pale in comparison, though still readable.
>>25570646What made you decide to read the sequel to a novel you thought was bad? Genuine question because I seem to come across this a lot from Sanderson readers.
>>25570633Yeah, same for the later Kraken king. The show actually loses most of the nuance - Robb is just retarded in the show, instead of entrapped by greedy bannermen due to being honorable, for example.

>>25571068>Most actual multi-millionaire trust fundie kids I know who aren't jerkwads are just hopelessly clueless rather than evil>Actual Robert Arryn tierThat anon and ASOIAF anons in general I'm convinced are genuinely retarded. They fundamentally don't understand human behaviour & how most political systems don't allow for abuses of power that comically evil, either due to the filtered process of non absolute power, or through grooming. These retards are genuinely stupid and so don't understand that somebody who is literally groomed to be the next highest power in the realm, isn't being raised strictly by their parents. Which is also why the "BUT NED WOULD DONE GOOD DURR" point is retarded. Ned is a retard and doesn't know shit about politics or raising somebody to be a ruler. An ill-equipped king is barely better for the realm than a senselessly psychotic one that has no idea what he's doing & is somehow given absolute power despite being a retarded child who wouldn't yet have earned the entitlement to act the way he did. Most child rulers had no real power, because obviously a fucking child is retarded and doesnt know what they're doing. Everything is filtered through somebody who does. It's all retarded. All of it. George can be objectively wrong on how much power a young king would have historically, make him do completely retarded contrived senseless things that make zero sense because customs & rules are supposed to exist, and some random retard from the shadows cant whisper "Do X and Y *evil villain laugh*" because power doesn't manifest like that. There are obviously exceptions. If the king is old enough to be mostly absolute and retarded at the same time, and was raised by eunuchs or something like some chinese historical examples, then yes shit can get fucked, but those examples are so few and far between and also usually the political circumstance was already unstable by the time the king comes to power.Either way, Joffrey makes zero sense from any historical, psychological, political, anthropological sense. And thats the problem. Retards want to cheat this by just going "He was uhhh spoiled...and raised by bad parents" Like every fucking king in history wasn't "spoiled". That's actually usually what guarantees they don't turn out like retards, that theyre spoiled with the resources to be trained by the smartest people, the most competent commanders, access to the leading texts on everything etc. etc.its the retarded normie take that understands nothing actually about human behaviour that thinks "Spoiled = Bad" because theyre fucking retards that don't know shit. At most being spoiled can give you somewhat delusional or highbrow expectations about people that arent realistic, but you can get that without being spoiled too.Joffrey isn't even the only problem, atleast in the show Theon was retarded too, and then there was Ramsay and Tywin, but the show was already Cartoonish by then.
>bro joffrey was retarded and a terrible ruler and had no powerbecause EVERYONE hated that little nigga, denying him any power, making him want the power even more and throw tantrums and insist the power was his, making people hate him even more. meanwhile the loophole was that the regent held power until he would become of age, and right before he came of age they killed his dumb asslike not once did joffrey hold any actual power, everyone just distracted him with glittering toys and tried their best to damage control his retarded ass from fucking stuff up too much. he was the least qualified nepotism hire of all time. his existence was meant to be so retarded it justified regicide
>>25571303>historicallyuhh nigga, game of thrones didn't actually happen, like it's a fantasy. you can accept dragons exist but you can't accept that a cunty king could exist and people would be too cowardly to tell him no and go against him? keep in mind, christianity doesn't really exist in this world, they're essentially pagans so a lot of virtue that would stop an european king from beheading some idiot in court isn't there. people value life much less in westeros, they murder the common folk all the time and no one really gives a shit.
>>25571354>christianity doesn't really exist in this world, they're essentially pagans its kind of funny because the Church of the Seven is meant to be the institutional religion. every other "pagan" faith has actual sorcerers committing fucked up rituals and magic, but Church of the Seven has zero feats. they're sort of just there as a representation of the common people to backlash against power. they might be the christianity equivalent
>>25571019Gay shit made by a gay woman.
>>25571384i'm not super familiar with the religions. but do they even have some kind of equivalent to the ten commandments? do they believe in an after life and that their actions affect whether they will be punished or not? the fire god seems to me closer to yahweh because his followers have a kind of relationship to him i.e. "what does the fire god want me to be/ to do", "how can i serve him better" etc. people don't seem to have that kind of relationship to the seven, like thinking "if i kill this begging child, will the Warrior be angry at me for killing the innocent?" and so on.
>>25565844It's great lowk. Pretty sad worldview overall but he has some cool ideas and the prose is beautiful. Don't listen to the unwashed masses like >>25565854 and >>25565868 and >>25565891 and even >>25565881. You genuinely can get filtered and that's probably why it has so many detractors
I want Bakker posting banned. Sick of this shit. GO AWAY!
>>25571415i dont remember off the top of my head but all the knightly or holy vows are related to the seven>In the name of the Warrior be brave>In the name of the Mother be kind>In the name of the Father be justetcthe religions are intentionally very weak and non-existent at the start, but as the world gets shittier, all the religions start slowly gaining power until they overshadow the politics
>>25565844Honestly? No. Most of the books are filler dogshit meant to pad out the story for extra books for extra profit and it reads as such. Baiting you for what, seven books about this horrible end of the world event that's coming soon but good luck to you not getting bored and deciding to drop the series around Judging Eye or White Luck Warrior because by that point in the story literally NOTHING has happened. Bakker clearly thinks his characters are deeper and more interesting than they actually are in reality and his self-insert Mary Sue main character borders on non-character territory, he is hilariously shallow and one-noted and rarely features at all. The entire holy war plot was a complete and utter fucking waste of time too. Cap that all off with an M Night Shyamalan tierd "WHAT A TWEEST!" ending and I was beyond sick and tired of it all. All of this being in service to the most shallow, edgy, narcissistic fart-sniffer pretentious emo edgy Hot Topic "PhIlOsOpHy" imaginable headlining every chapter in a story that is essentially just a secondary addon to a vehicle that is mainly just used to catalog the authors various homosexual fetishes. It also follows the plotline beats of LOTR pretty closely while also claiming to be the anti-Tolkein fantasy series including a fellowship of assholes who trek through the wastes hunted by pale rapist orcs who dive into a Not-Moria and face Not-Orcs, Not-Trolls and a Not-Smaug.I could go on, but I'm thoroughly tired of this series and tired of the discourse around it. No, its not a masterpiece.

>>25571596NTA and I know Bakker claims that Kellhus is meant to be more of a plot device than a character, but if you think about it for a bit, it produces a mess. We spend an inordinate amount of time on a plot device, and it's conflict against a force deliberately built so one-dimensional as to be another plot device. So most of the series are two plot devices doing Jujutsu Kaisen bullshit while an occasional Actual Character happens about. Wtf? And what of those Actual Characters? Akka fucking sucks! Esmenet and Serwe are revoltingly boring. Cnaiur is somewhat interesting in concept, but his development across the series is so nonsensical and disjointed you might as well declare him a plot device for producing violent homomasochism scenes and one-liners. What do we have left? Fucking Conphas? Proyas? Don't make me laugh.
>>25565516i didn't know he was chill like that
>>25571673>We spend an inordinate amount of time on a plot deviceHardly? The first book does have a lot of chapters from his POV and while you do see the inklings of his being a complete abomination, he still retains enough human parts back then + Kellhus as a character is sorta naturally charismatic enough that you can forgo the quirks. Only really by book 2 or so is where most people presumably go yeah the Dûnyain are irredeemably disgusting (and arguably it's not even the same Kellhus after the Circumfix, just a Akojki-subsumed instrument)>and it's conflict against a force deliberately built so one-dimensional as to be another plot deviceWho? Cnaur? Or the Consult? Assuming you mean the latter, how are they one-dimensional? In fact, their motivations are genuinely 100% reasonable >Akka fucking sucksGenuinely filtered desu. He's annoying and petty and strong and just an overall well rounded character>Esmenet and SerweEsmenent is good, Serwe is innocent and you can hardly hate her >What do we have left? Fucking Conphas? Proyas? Why did you pick some of the best character work from the series as your example here lolActually agreed about Cnaur tho. I don't see the appeal and (minus the ending) his appearances in the Aspect-Emperor were weak
>>25571673>And what of those Actual Characters?Really, the general impression you get from analyzing TSA is that Bakker really enjoys anthropology, so he delights in nerding out with historical and scriptural concepts like>"what if I had like a Buddhist convent, but instead of all that Samsara bullshit they spent centuries doing eugenics and hyperrationalism?" >"what if Noah's Ark but it's an alien spaceship and instead of saving life it brings death?">"also legendary magical weapon is a scifi gun lmao Vance would've loved that">"you know someone who knew how people respond to this kind of shit could manipulate millions through parenthesizing like really fucking easily it's fucking insane if you think about it">"and grokking Plato allows you to breath fire and fold space">"and you learn how to grok Plato by magically induced Sopater flashbacks!">"Crusades but with tactics built around battle mages lol">"so collapse of their spiritual metaphysics would be like, an actual literal apocalypse to them!" >"what if we look at the Barbarian Horde trope through the lens of what their metaphysics are supposed to be? Oooh, and all the way we can violate it, awesome!" >"and there's magical mind control but it like rewires your brain neurologically so it actually makes you believe the things you do it's not just puppeting"but then he remembers that he's supposed to write a series of fantasy novels and not a Silmarillion worldbuilding loredump, so he has to populate this thing with characters and plot, and that makes him feel like his teeth are being pulled, so those parts end up filled with suck and boredom. And so much fucking gay rape jfc the dude definitely has issues, he either enjoys it and it's all too fucked up for a well-adjusted pervert to enjoy, or he doesn't, and then it's some mental self-emasculation shit he does as he shit it out on a page.
>>25571707>Hardly? Only really by book 2 or so is where most people presumably go yeah the Dûnyain are irredeemably disgusting (and arguably it's not even the same Kellhus after the Circumfix, just a Akojki-subsumed instrument)That doesn't dress the fact of Kellhus and Kellhus shenanigans taking up the vast majority of page space across the series. If we have plot devices to provide out actual actors with context, why the fuck are they taking up the majority of actual text, even way past getting established? >how are they one-dimensional>their motivations are genuinely 100% reasonable Not a contradiction. They are pretty much just literally dehumanized utility. Feel free to find a second dimension to them.>anon you don't get it these lame, boring, revolting and pointless characters are actually... le good!If they are good then it should be easy to describe what about them is good.
